I've been wondering about something. Do people (mostly women) that work as office staff at a doctor's office have to wear scrubs? I ask because around here every office staff person wears scrubs. The women at the Pediatrician's office and the women at the optical store all had on scrubs today. They always do.

They don't do any of the stuff that would require scrubs. Is this another sign of the overly casual attitude for dressing? What do you think?

People wearing scrubs in retail/office environments? That doesn't happen here in Australia!

I think scrubs are pretty ugly, but they are sooo comfy. I love it when I'm working in areas that require them because its like wearing your pajamas all day long (something I love to do!)

But in retail and for no apparent reason? No way! I spend a decent amount of my day taking blood from people or attempting to get cannulas into them, so if I don't need scrubs for that, then I don't see why an officeworker does!!!

I wonder if it's a dress code or something. I don't know why it would be a dress code to require office staff to wear scrubs though.

It bothers me. You work in an office doing adminstrative work and you're wearing scrubs. Why? I almost want to ask them.

I've never seen staff at the eye doctor's wearing scrubs. I think the people who wear scrubs at my doctor's offices are either nurses, or technicians of some sort. I think the women who just answer the phones, take appts and deal with insurance issues do not wear scrubs.

The office manager at my dental office wears scrubs and I have no clue why since she does not work on teeth. I doubt the dentist would make her do this if she choose to wear a smart casual wardrobe instead. He is a nice guy and it is a small office.
I fear it is just an easy habit to get into for her.
At the optometrist office the staff seems to wear a lab coat over their other attire (silly but better than scrubs).

The optometrist office I get my glasses from the staff wears business casual, but the office wear we just got my son's glasses they were all wearing scrubs. Also, as I've mentioned every single Dr's office I've gone to around here the office staff wears scrubs.

I think you're right Chris. It must be a habit they fall into.

My mother works for an eye doctor and she is required to wear scrubs. She is a technician though, not office staff. The office staff is usually on the smart casual side.

However, on days when the doctor is on vacation, everyone sneaks in in sweats. It's pretty pathetic.

However, I would not necessarily pass judgment. I see no reason for my mom to wear scrubs, but that is what the doctor requires. It may or may not be a choice.

Some offices seem to require it. What bugs me is when people wear their scrubs everywhere. I'm sure it's really comfy but it's pretty sloppy (especially when paired with crocs). But the worst is those people who wear dirty scrubs that look like they might have some icky bodily fluids on them out and about. I was at a deli recently and saw a young woman wearing some gross looking scrubs standing right in front of me in line. Granted there was a hospital nearby but I was still kind of grossed out. I wouldn't wear a chemical coated lab coat around in public...

I am surprised to hear that people would wear dirty scrubs in public. I work with chemical and biological stuff and have to wear a lab coat, but there are strict rules and regulations that require that we remove them as soon as we are exiting the actual lab space - to go to the office, restroom, even out in the hallway. You have to deal with putting the coat on and off dozens of times during the day, but it makes complete sense and I would so even if I weren't required to.
