You’re not alone, lisap. I downloaded the book and then couldn’t be bothered. Gaudy spoiled rich people aren’t that interesting. My bff only got halfway thru and my mum is boycotting the movie because she DID read the whole book. Lolol.
That said, my bff and I went to see it. We were thinking we’d be cultural misfits in a sea of other Asians, but it turned out to be a broad spectrum audience... and then we got mansplained by this chick re racism and 1980s London... which was hilarious since a) she wasn’t even born then and b) unbeknownst to her, she was lecturing two brats whose school boasts Prince Andrew as a patron (not that this is that rarefied).
Anyways, the movie IMO was a real movie. A nice standard Cinderella romcom. Didn’t expect that. Was expecting something self-conscious, like Joy Luck. Awkwafina ran away with the show, hands down.
My one thing about the movie, which made mansplaining chick even more cringe-y... uh, it was totally colonialist. It was about filthy rich Chinese people who were doing the colonialist oppressor thing in Singapore. Don’t know that’s progress.
Ya. I said it. Lol.
