No sooner do I pat myself on the back for my May SYC than I get some active shorts on order from Athleta. Sheesh. To be fair, the swim skirt I wore rafting got ruined with sap and I have no swim short/skirt/other for the summer season. I also am lacking lightweight active shorts so I'm hoping these do double duty for biking, rafting, etc, etc. I spend most my summer days off with friends persuing these activities, so it is a very real hole. And I used a $10 giftcard towards it that we had. Okay, I'm done justifying - hang me alongside Rae and IK!!!

Mo -- these are great and very versatile shorts! I can imagine rafting down a mountain stream in them, or biking through town for that matter! Your climate and lifestyle have changed in the past few months, so I'm sure there are a few geniune "needs," not just "wants."

Perhaps we need a new category -- SYN (shop your needs, or necessities), or FYH (fill your holes). These seem to fit your situation to a "t."

Seems like a practical and reasonable need! It was a huge revelation for you last week (or so) to realize you should put your efforts towards more active clothes than dressy things. Go girl!

I have a version of these shorts and like them for water activities. However, they are very short! I wear padded bike shorts for biking... Because otherwise, I gotta say, my tush gets sore! Are you road riding or mountain biking?

I don't really consider this purchase a violation of SYC 'cause you can't really wear them as "clothing" other than for their purpose.

Thanks for the temporary reprieve, all! Una, I read them as 4" inseam, which is plenty long enough for me personally, I am always more concerned with seam placement if you know what I mean!
I do have a pair of padded shorts with the chamois and everything that I bought for my triathlon, but I wanted a pair of more everyday passable active shorts for short rides that involve other social activities.

I have decent luck with Athleta items and the quality is there (at least was before Gap bought them - less experience since) so not a bad purchase considering your lifestyle.

Yeah, I'm going with 'gear' on this one, or at least 'bare necessities'. I mean, no one would deny you a bra or knickers or *one* swimsuit while you SYC, right, unless the financial straits were truly desperate?
