Craft Time w/ Lyn ... - YouLookFab Forum

Dear YLF,

YAY! Red soles are not copyrighted! (http://www.cnn.com/2011/BUSINE.....es.ruling/) ... tee hee; so I've always wanted a pair of red soles, so ... I got nail polish today. Just the cheapest I found because it wasn't going to go on my nails! I saw this on TV the other day (I think it was on MarketPlace) ... so I decided to paint up the bottom of my heels.

Photo 1 - Supplies!
Photo 2 - First coat of varnish; you'll notice that the bottoms are quite hard and not grippy, so I got some "sole stoppers" (clear) that you can see in the picture.
Photo 3 - Second coat of varnish; one more and that's all the polish I have!

I also decorated up a Hello Kitty button. The tiny thing looked really lonely. :p Everything is made with scraps from the craft basket!

well, how much fun is that!!!
When you say varnish, are you talking about the nail polish, or did you put a coat of wood varnish over the nail polish. Not sure about your Canuck vocab here

My Loubou's are turning green with envy over here! That's a nifty trick! And much less expensive than paying a cobbler to put sole protectors on to get the red color.

coat it with some high gloss varnish and you wont't have to walk to work... you can slide

Better yet, lacquer them up good and slick, stage a potentially disastrous slip at work, and go crashing down in "The Boy's" arms!

I have a vision of silver and gold bottomed pumps in my closet. Great idea, Lyn

The original pumps are Naturalizer - I got them last year on clearance for like $14; I think they're about $80 or 90 regular.

I like their wide widths. They're comfy

3rd coat of nail polish has been applied + touch ups!

PS: q-tips with nail polish remover = very useful.

What a fun idea! I'd love to do a red sole pair. Need to think about what shoes.

The idea of other colors and/or sparkly ones is pretty cool!

May I request an update on how well the polish holds up after using the shoes for a while?

Weird thing I found out; apparently that's how the red soles came to be - nail polish! "The Parisian shoemaker says he came up with the idea of giving all his shoes a red sole in 1992 after painting red nail polish on the bottom of a pair of shoes, because he felt they 'lacked energy'."

How fun, crafty Lyn! I'm also interested to know how they hold up after walking.

May I ask if you did anything special to protect the shoes (the part above the sole) while you were painting them? Did you tape them up or anything, or do you just have very steady hands? (I'm Miss Shaky Fingers over here.)

I used a bunch of newspapers to stuff up the shoe so I didn't have to hold it. I have very shaky hands and it was fine!

I anchored both elbows on the table (if yours don't reach, use books on either side to support your elbows). I just made sure that the brush was relatively dry before doing the sides.

I have clonked around in my house with these, so far, no probs.
