Covering up gray - color-deposit shampoos?

Oh lord I have gray hair! BAM! And my hair is very, very dark so it really shows. I know too many women with roots and I'm not up for a high-maintenance color routine. Does anyone have any suggestions for color-depositing shampoos or something that would tint these silver strands a bit more browny?

You could try at home semi-permanent hair color, it fades out slowly.

Nothing other than henna. Coloring gray hair is very hard but I am no expert. Only permanent hair color works.

I say let them be! You are in your 40's, right? -- you've earned them, I say.

The problem with color that covers the few gray hairs, is that it also dulls the dark hairs, which are still in the steep majority.

Those shampoos haven't worked for me very well. Grey hair is resistant to change...I get a semi-permanent color added every 6 weeks or so, and that works great, plus, I don't end up with unsightly roots

I use Clairol Root Touch up and use a tooth brush to brush the color though my gray strands. That way it stays localized and I don't color chunks of hair. The toothbrush works really well in spreading the color and getting very close to the root.

Yeah this all just sounds too hard and messy. I've never been an unguent or fussy girl... you'd think whoever could make a shampoo that could tint grays with a slightly luminous brown shine would make a mint!

i have same problem. With my dark hair grey roots stand out a lot more. I have tried semi permanent and permanent colours but none of them lasted more than a couple of weeks and it is a lot of work to do at home. I got root touch up system today that Isabel is talking about. Let's see how this goes.

I do a semi permanent color at home in a lighter color than my natural brown. I don't get roots, it just fades away. It takes me a half hour every other month or so.

I've had zero luck with the color shampoos but a color depositing conditioner can help extend the life of my color. The brand that I had been using was discontinued though. I'm looking into making up my own.

When my grey hairs started to be noticeable, the best solution seemed to be getting my hair lightly frosted a couple of times a year. I tried the semi-permanent color but didn't like the flat color result until it had faded some. Using a color lighter than your natural one would be a good idea.

The shampoos coat the hair and give a funny texture which on my hair type really tangled.

I would maybe try a semi permanent colour instead.

I've been greying since I was 4 (auto-immune disorder.) No color depositing shampoo will ever work. Sorry.

Ugh. I work with a lot of younger guys, and I SO do not need to be the old lady in the office. I guess I'll ask my stylist about semipermanent color. : (
