My son came home from school early today. A mother of multiple kids in the primary school that feeds into his school has tested positive for the Corona virus. We are waiting to see what happens next.

This is a far more direct impact than I had expected. How is the virus affecting the rest of you?

ETA I worry much more about friends and family in the US than I do about us here in Germany. Universal health care means people can and do stay home for days, even with a simple bug, and that any vaccine will be available to everyone. Those measures will slow its spread much more effectively than a system where people whose jobs most likely include handling your food, clothing and other items, or performing set ices like cleaning and some parts of health care are least likely to be able to stay home sick, because they need the money.

I am in Italy. Yes, this is having a more direct impact than I had expected. It is recommended not to attend crowded places, not to take public transport ... I feel deprived of my freedom and I am worried from a human point of view and for our economy.

We are washing hands like crazy!! We have cases close to home, and DH takes the train to work - it is worrisome for sure! We have canceled spring break plans (in a couple of weeks) and plan on hunkering down at home a while to see how things go. I am mostly worried about my inlaws and dad who live out-of-state... also, how much strain the hospitals and medical providers can handle if things get worse.

Wow that is close! Here in Michigan there aren't yet any cases but my nephew was spending a semester in Italy for his college and they have just been sent home.

we just just had our first case here yesterday but outwardly everything seems to be carrying on as usual.No local schools closed,l went to the gym this am and people were going about as normal .we have been told to stop shaking hands in church.However it’s spreading and the uk had its first death yesterday so l don’t know how it will be in a few weeks time.Wait and see I guess but it’s all keep calm and carry on at present.

Last night on the news they said there was a “presumptive” case here, a man who had been on the cruise ship. They are awaiting test results. He is related to someone at an elementary school about three miles from us. They have closed the school due to a high number of flu like symptoms.

We were planning a trip to the Texas Gulf Coast next month, but decided it might be better to avoid planes and airports.

Whoa. That’s direct. Nothing quite yet, but it’s closing in. Some area schools shut. Events being cancelled. One case in town.

My boss thinks we can apply for unemployment if we have to shut down. I think she’s pretty wrong about that being a viable option, even if it’s theoretically true.

We're washing our hands quite a bit more, local schools have issued extra cleaning supplies, and we've pretty much decided to cancel our spring break travel plans, since those involved air travel. Thankfully, I can do 99% of my work from home with a Wifi connection and Zoom, if it comes to that. My university is planning for all classes to be on-line, if needed, and has started restricting domestic travel, in addition to the international travel restrictions that they announced last week. My train has been slightly less crowded, but otherwise, daily life still seems pretty normal.

Yesterday cases were reported in my state for the first time, and I expect we're just seeing the beginning. Unfortunately, the health care system in the states means that many people won't seek care if they get sick until they're REALLY sick and have infected other people. And then we have a "president" who downplays the importance of this, implying that it's a hoax or that it's no worse than the common cold... oh, don't get me started.

My husband owns an IT consulting and project management company, and their largest client is an international hotel chain. They are halting any new hiring and buckling down for a long period of decline. Conferences and events are being canceled by the hundreds each day. Earnings are down 25%. The travel industry is on the front lines of this economic impact, and it will trickle through to all kinds of industries before long.

Stay safe all! It is getting closer in all parts the world including mine. I was in a right panic about it this time last week but I have become clearer headed. Like Fashintern I feel worried about countries where healthcare is unaffordable or unavailable. And for the elderly or immune compromised. And yes there will be ramifications for business, schooling and the economy - and if there is a large volume of people being sick at the same time how health systems will cope with it.

Luckily our leader is truthful and accurate in the information she shares. This should be a given of course but I know it is not.

50+/- cases in Canada depending on who is reporting. (Gov’t confirms 26 cases in Ontario, 21 in BC, and 2 in Quebec.) Most convalescing at home. No deaths, but an 80 yo in BC is reported to be in serious condition. 200+ cruise ship folks who were quarantined at a military base after being repatriated, have just been cleared to go home. There seems to be ‘an abundance of caution’ all around and gov’t transparency with reporting.

DS#2 reports his company has cancelled ALL travel, even between local plants, and any meetings, etc. are teleconference. Both DS’s work in environments where cleanliness/sanitation is paramount. There is an increase in hand washing, but DH and I are going about life as per usual. Some friends have cancelled trips, and others are going ahead with their plans.

*DH and I went grocery shopping, and the spaces where hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes are normally stocked, were empty.

23 confirmed cases in Vienna so far, and one of them was in close contact with 17 teachers in my DDs school. They are in quarantine now and school was closed for 2 days. But numbers are rising by the hour, at least 2 more school closed.

My neighbors who live across the hall from us have been quarantined out of an "abundance of caution" for the next week or so. I don't want to go into any more detail about their exposure as it could be personally identifiable. Brings it very close to home for us!

Meanwhile my company has taken this all very seriously and I have been impressed with their response. All travel and events are canceled through May. We're moving events to virtual platforms. Anyone who can WFH, is WFH (including me). Many offices in APAC/EMEA are closed down. One NA office was closed down temporarily for cleaning because a COVID-positive patient had visited the offices. People managers are coached to not pressure anyone to go into the office if they are reticent, as they could have vulnerable family at home or in their care.

DH continues to go into the office daily but sticks with bicycle rather than public transportation. On days he can WFH he has been. We are also fully prepped and have been for about a week now. Ironically, it was our now-quarantined neighbors who urged us to prep awhile back.

I just looked at a flight I nearly booked a couple of weeks ago. It was almost $500 then. It's now $285. I'm not sure it's worth it though.

We are in Montreal. I noticed signs in some of the washrooms in stores telling people to wash their hands for 20 seconds. We are washing our hands more and avoiding crowded places when possible. We walk to most places and we are not taking the metro.
There are fewer people at the Yoga studio. Not sure if it is related.
There is suppose to be a big family get together in a few weeks. People will be flying in from all over. There may be some cancellations. I know I would cancel. Why put yourself at risk right now?

DH is not terribly old (66) but has had pneumonia for nearly two weeks. Thankfully, he is sl-o-o-o-w-ly getting better, since we feel that another trip to Kaiser or the hospital would be more of a risk than staying home. He is medically fragile with lupus nephritis and Stage 5 renal disease, diabetes, and asthma among other things. He has had pneumonia a number of times so I assume his lungs are pretty scarred so the gunk kinda hangs on and gets stuck there. His upcoming three doctor appointments are all by phone, but right now he has a PT class and a procedure in a couple of weeks so I assume those won't be around sick people.

Washing my hands or using hand sanitizer too often gives me really bad eczema and cracks in my hands that takes months and months to resolve. I am trying very hand never to touch my face.

We live in Seattle. The hot spot of it all in the US. We have been in a state of emergency for weeks. Enough said.

Been preparing all week. Things change daily and hourly here. Lots of schools closed and telecommuting. And raw hands from hand washing. We are glued to the news.

We are calm, organized and careful. Business as usual but VERY CAREFULLY. Worried about my Dad. He is at risk, not us.

Very sad for how this is affecting people who don’t have our luxuries, good health, and what it is doing to the economy.

Angie, my heart goes out to you and yours. I have teammates who work in Seattle so I've been very well aware of what's going on there right now, and also closely following your local news.

From an outsider's perspective, King County is responding very professionally and to me seems really on top of things. I have been impressed. They have been testing more than other cities, so it may seem like you have more cases for that reason alone. I have a lot of respect for your city's response to date.

My parents were considering a move to assisted living but now not so sure, as they may be safer were they are (remote area, with packed freezers and pantries and other supplies).

King County's response is leading the CDC. Basically our procedures and protocols are what the CDC will use. Though it is always changing

I heard someone in my apartment building say she is "so sick of hearing about coronavirus." I was really astounded, given that a large proportion of the tenants are seniors in not-so-good health (including her!). I've been keeping up-to-date on the news so that I can at least have some idea about what's coming down the pike and when.

I am concerned about my dad, who is 80 and has some significant health conditions, some of them respiratory. At least he is not in a highly populated area.

I haven't heard of any cases here, but it is only a matter of time. Last weekend, the bottled water was just about gone at my local Target. People are buying up everything just in case. I'm pretty much living life as normal except washing hands more.

I too get bad eczema and cracks on my hands from washing. I got some oatmeal soap, which seems to help some. I should get another bar and put it in a baggie to take when out on errands. The last time I used liquid soap in a public bathroom, I got contact dermatitis that really set back my eczema healing.

Here in PA there are now confirmed cases and the affected schools are closed, not sure for how long. There is no hand sanitizer to be had in stores. My daughter lives in Brooklyn and asked me to send some wipes etc. I sent what I could find which wasn't much and didn't include hand sanitizer. She is employed at an out patient substance abuse clinic and in direct contact with the public every day. I'm trying not to worry but assume things will be getting worse before they get better.
My son works for a disaster recovery IT firm and they are discussing the upcoming supply chain problems they will have getting some of the products they require from China if this goes on for a long time.

I'm in murica, where the occupant of the White House keeps saying it's under control. I have COPD. I work with the public and the public's food. I cannot afford to take time off. I am in Texas, where we have several confirmed cases and lots of cars that we love to drive anywhere and everywhere.

Part of me wants to use the FMLA and my divorce settlement to just say "screw it" and stay home. Part of me knows that isn't a fiscally responsible choice. It's a tough decision, for sure.

I'm also in Seattle and work as a contractor for Boeing. Many workers who are not directly involved in production activities (which have slowed significantly since the beginning of the year) are electing to work virtually. Unfortunately, I do not have that option since my job requires me to meet face to face with people. All I can do is remain calm and take common sense steps to keep myself healthy.

I don't think we've had a case in Winnipeg yet, but I have no burning desire to be in an airport right now. We have a family wedding in Montreal in May, and I'm putting off responding for as long as I can.

While at present I'm not too worried, the uncertainty about what might happen makes me anxious. For example, we have to pay for our June Disney Cruise next week. We're going to talk to our son later today and go through various alternatives. We are in the age group with the highest mortality rate, so we need to be especially careful.

We just don't have enough facts, not to mention the lack of available tests.

In the meantime, I probably should stop buying clothes in anticipation of the cruise. Just wait and see.

Taylor and Gigi, all we can do is try to educate our older parents and take the necessary precautions and prep with their carers. I am in contact with my Dad's carers very frequently, although he still lives alone in his flat. Everyone is doing what they can. I'm sure you are too.

MsMaven, we have not cancelled our upcoming travel yet. We are taking it day by day. It can go either way, and will make changes when we need to. Greg travelled to SLC last week. Just came home. All fine. I am still shopping with clients VERY carefully. All fine.

Nuancedream, Anna, and other Seattleites, WA state has been in a state of emergency for a while - yes we are in the thick of it. We have to stay calm, be prepared, organized, and level headed. Carry on VERY carefully and be supportive to others who are in more need than us.
