Copying pictures for use in threads (using OS X)

Hi Greg --
Referring back to this thread where the question of using links vs. pictures came up.

My response was to do both but that it can be a pain with some websites to copy pictures.

My usual method is to to move the pointer to the picture and then hit Control - Save Image As. That lets me quickly copy the picture to my desktop. But more and more websites make this difficult because when you move the pointer you magnify the picture. Is there a way around this? I've been copying the picture onto Pinterest after which I can use the image freely it seems. But there may be a much better way!

I know this is a Mac question but it does impact how I and others use YLF so hope you don't mind me asking.

Not Greg, but I use the screen shot function that is built into OS X. Command-Shift-3 takes a shot of the entire screen. More often I use Command-Shift-4, which changes the cursor into a crosshair that you can then use to select a region of your screen for taking a shot of.

Cocolion, I'm afraid I don't have a lot to add. Diana's method and your approach of using a bookmarklet (like Pinterest's pin it) to get the image onto a more usable page are the main options of accessing an image in a web page.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the owner of the image might not want you to copy it (and we shouldn't post copyrighted material).

Thanks Greg and Diana. How do we check and see if we are allowed to post images, is there some way to know? I do know that there are those who put their name on the picture with a copyright, you see this on Pinterest too.

So in your opinion, for the good of YLF, is it better just to have links, rather than trying to add pictures as well? I add the pictures to make the thread richer / more visual but hadn't thought about the copyright aspect of the pictures.

Honestly I usually just use it for things like product photos from Nordstroms and stuff like that. I don't generally like to post other people's photos (like from blogs and stuff) here. My general rule of thumb is yes, I post it if it's a photo from a retailer or ebay or something like that, but not if it's from a personal blog or website. Basically, if it's a photo used for commercial purposes I think it's OK to share it. I'm not sure about things like magazine photos; generally I just post a link.

ETA: Oh, and I use the screenshot function embarrassingly often on my own photos. If I'm looking for an old WIW of my own and I'm using the computer that doesn't have the photos stored on it, I'll just hunt down my old post and screenshot the pictures.

The whole thing of posting images is such a grey area. People don't seem to hold back on Pinterest, for example.

OK I wonder if this is a way to look at it. Many pictures come with a marklet for sharing, such as for Pinterest or Facebook or Twitter. If there is a button, I am going to feel OK about copying the picture because that person is encouraging the sharing of that picture via the marklets. Does that reasoning make sense? If there is no button, it's much grayer.
