copycatting the rubric idea - YouLookFab Forum

I have for some time had a couple style 'keywords' in my head, but never thought about the rubric as Shannon put together.
Since Rae's post today, I decided I'd throw mine out there as well.
Being that I do dress very differently from FL to Tahoe (as some of you just found out this last week or two lol) it was a little harder to see what the similarities were between sundresses and espadrilles and boots and coats.
Here's my shot at it:

Tailored (EDIT to Structured) - fitted close to the body somewhere within the outfit

Textured - chunky sweaters, corduroy pants, soft flowy dresses, silky satin tops, wooden heeled shoes, patent leather

Hardware/details - a zipper, buckle or snap or even just a twist on a blouse or a pleated neckline

Repetition - not always matchy matchy but sometimes. Usually a repeat of a color somewhere else in the outfit, but sometimes shapes, like a circular belt buckle with hoop earrings

I remember the Style Statement and knowing right off my secondary word would be sensual, but never getting the first word nailed down. I toyed with structured or ordered, which would equate to the Tailored and Repetition here in this case. I guess I'll look at my outfits in this light for a bit to see if it works for me.

Mo, did you develop those words or are those from a set list?

Just free associating, since I just met you IRL, I feel your style has a sporty air. Because you are very fit, that says sporty. Also the equestrian boots and the scarf had a sporty vibe to it.

ETA: kicking myself that I didn't get the waitress to take our picture!

Denise, I could see where sporty comes in . . . and yeah, I just pulled the words out of thin air. Unfortunately I don't really try to be sporty, it's more a byproduct of how/where I live I literally dressed for a snowstorm this morning. When I found it sunny in town it was funny. It's snowing hard still at my house. What a difference 12 miles makes lol. I wish I could have dressed a little more 'fashiony' in hindsight. You were as put together as I imagined you would be! Lovely head to toe.

FWIW:

I would replace tailored with Structured.

Add in Sporty and Girly.

Interesting idea- I missed Shannon's post ( will go and read). I like your words, I should look at doing this too but I never did like homework.

That's a good question. Your style is very casual, Mo. A Tailored Style is more dressy. But you like body definition, so Structure seems more accurate in my mind.

Ah, makes sense! It's true I am not much for looking 'buttoned up' so to speak. Thanks for clarifying.

I love a sporty vibe! I just have never pulled it off that well. And sporty does not equal gear. When I think of sporty I think Katharine Hepburn.

Does your style rubric include where you want to go, style-wise, in the future?

Hmm, great question! I'm not sure that it does. I think I was just trying to pin down what makes something 'me', maybe in the hopes of not buying mistakes but still trying new things with what works for me in mind?

EDIT: and I"m all good with being sporty! I just honestly didn't think I portrayed that vibe. Funny how you don't see yourself quite how others do!

Hm, I never thought of you as sporty, Mo... maybe I am being too literal with the word, as I think of sneakers and track jackets, like my sis wore in high school. I guess if I think of the "sportswear" department of a store, that is more like it.

I do think your list fits really well. I'm excited about this for all of us, and hopeful that it can help streamline the dressing process!

It's so interesting to have an insight into the way each of us puts our outfits together! I'm intrigued, for example, by your addition of 'repetition', as something to consciously aim for --- because I often find myself admiring the way motifs repeat in outfits I like.

Also, when you say hardware/detailed, I'm wondering (based on your examples), whether you want to consider 'constructed' as a single-word equivalent. Because the hardware and folding techniques etc all say construction to me --- one from the DIY angle, the other in the sense of architecture and origami etc.

I don't think of structured as exactly right, either. I think of "fitted", even though that doesn't have the same cool ring to it. Many of your items are soft and unstructured to my mind, but they have a fitted aspect somewhere.
