I found this top from Anthropologie and absolutely fell in love with it. From the moment I saw it I thought of a multitude of ways to wear it. I brought it home and a usually very encouraging boyfriend said he very much didn't like it. So now i'm stuck as to whether to return it or keep it. See here: http://bit.ly/12Oq0w8

Do any of you take your partner's opinions into consideration? Even if you love something?

Well I love it! I'm not sure what I expected after the build-up but I think its fab. I like how you styled it. Sometimes I take what my DH says with a pinch of salt, though like yours he is generally encouraging. I would keep the top.

I think it's great. As a fellow pear, I am all about fun shoulder details.

Anyway, I say keep. Don't wear it for date night though!

PS - I love how it echoes the curlicue on your sunglasses.

My philosophy on things that are not beloved by the men in our lives is that there are plenty of opportunities to wear those pieces when the men are elsewhere! So I vote keep it if you love it!

Hmm. I have to say it... the shoulders look a little like something my boyfriend uses to wash his ridiculously expensive European import car. So I kinda get where your BF is coming from.

But you've styled it beautifully! You have a retro pin-up vibe in the middle of a fresh, modern look. And you look happy in it. I vote keep it, wear it, love it

(p.s. - It would be fun/ny to experiment and see if it's possible to re-align your boyfriend's thinking. Do something to bombshell this sweater up a little more - pencil skirt, heels, backseam stockings, push-up bra. But don't say anything. Let him think it's accidental. Then see how much he likes that sweater.... )

Jeez. I was expecting a graphic t with a pic of Charles Manson or something. So your SO doesn't like it. Well, if you love it that much, you could always wear it when he's not around....

I understand your wanting to balance out the hips, and there's also something fun and attention-getting about this over-the-top top. It kind of reminds me of salsa wear (or maybe it's another latin dance). ETA that pic is obviously a gross exaggeration!

On reviewing your blog pics, I do kind of like it. Just thinking that it would not be a great piece for layering on top, though. So the sleeves would always be up front and center!

I think its interesting but it wouldn't be a versatile piece in your wardrobe. If I had something like that in my closet, I would wear it once, maybe twice and then would be done with it. But other than my practical issues, its cute and I would love to see it on other people. If you like it....keep it.

I rarely return stuff my husband pans because I dress for myself, not him. Unless its a really high ticket item and then it does matter. I mean if I spent a chunk of change on an item, I wouldn't want to endure a negative response every time I wore it. But if it was a clearance item that I bought to try a trend, then whatever. Eye roll away everyone!

First, I agree that the shoulder detail adds interest in terms of the silhouette, and I like the neckline. In addition, it elevates a solid/solid outfit to something more interesting.

However, somewhat like La Belle Demimondaine (who noted that the shoulder embellishment looked what her boyfriend uses to wash his car), the embellishment reminds me of a favorite doll whose hair had a similar look. And, as I always do, I wonder about layering. If you are wearing this (thickish knit) top, it is probably chilly, meaning you'd need something on top (at least from door to car). The shoulder detail could make that challenging. Ultimately, if you like the look, keep it, wear it, and enjoy it.

I think it's fun but my practical side says it's a top you would only wear a few times because it is so memorable. That said, if I really loved it I would accept that my DH doesn't love it and wear it anyway!

PS I got those same sunglasses for my daughter and she loves them!

Lol, Lauren. I had to laugh, because the top is pure Man Repeller. I am, of course, a big fan of Man Repeller style, only I call it Clown World.

I always consider my bf's opinions and take care to respect his feelings. Mostly I acknowledge he's right, and then tell him, "Welcome to Clown World! :D" He's long suffering and indulgent about it. I endeavour not to embarrass him in key places, like the hardware store or his favourite Thai restaurant. But all bets are off at Whole Foods.

I would totally take myself shopping in this sweater on Hayes St.

I love it and you look great in it. Men are weird. I do like my husband to like what I wear, but I think we don't have to follow their every opinion. Look at Elle's thread on the dress for the wedding for major discussion on the same dilemma!

I'm not very fond of it. Without the spaghetti looking sleeves, it looks like a very basic sweater. However, if YOU like it and there's been no seeds of doubt sowed in your mind by naysayers, wear it with pride. The best clothing items are the ones you can rock effortlessly without other people's opinions.

My DH would hate it too, and would tease me mercilessly if I wore something like that (probably something to do with poodles). And my baby and toddlers would either get their hands caught in the loops or pull them off! But I think you look fine in it, it looks fun, and if it makes you happy, you should keep it! If there's something that DH really really hates, like the faux leopard and faux fur jackets, I end up getting rid of them. There was no point because it would be a date night item but he would hate it if I wore it for date night. But other things like the H&M floral pants (he calls them clown pants) I'm willing to fight for and wear to work or for mom's night out when he's not around.

So, are you keeping it?

Well personally, I don't like it too much.

As a separate question I do ask my DHs advice. But unless he absolutely finds something revolting I don't usually change my mind if its something Iove.

thank you everyone for your opinions!

I think I have decided to keep it for a few reasons:
1) My closest girlfriends saw it in person today and each one of them gasped with delight and loved it. Their reactions just made my day. They also agreed that it would be a conversation piece
2) San Francisco weather is weird in that it is only slightly chilly most days so a light "sweater" that covers the body and pants are sufficient. As a result I think this will be just fine.
3) I imagine myself keeping this and passing it down to future generations for some reason. It will just be "one of those pieces"

Boyfriend will get used to it. Though I have promised that if he really doesn't like it, I will wear it out with the girls instead
