Continuing the common theme...

that seems to be runnning on the forum at the moment - about bra size, I found this article that ran in this Sunday's Observer (the Sunday edition of the Guardian) about why British women bra size is increasing:

Wow, if 8000 women a week are getting fitted at just one British department store chain, surely it can't be long before those distressing "80% of all women are wearing the wrong bra size" statistics change, right?

Great article -- I love the depth of information that is often provided by the British press!

I think is must also mean that eventually more sizes will be readily available (and at discounted price points). At least I hope!

Very interesting! April - I've wondered that too, but the feeling I'm getting from those who really know is that department store fitters don't necessarily get it right. I've had a fitting at Marks and Spencers about once a year for the last few years and with all of the discussion on the forum I'm wondering if I'm fitted correctly...

I'm thinking of going into M&S and trying a variety of sizes - I'm in a 36B but will try 34C and 32D and seeing what happens... Not sure if there's a 'proper' place local to me, but will look out for those.

I'm so happy that I wasn't born 50 years ago, when my bra size wasn't even available. Sophia Loren wore 38C in 1955, poor thing. Looking at her old photos, I guess she was near 32F or so.

This further cements my belief that the "add 4-5 inches" rule is outdated and left over from when there wasn't an adequate range of sizes.

Honestly, for being such a bombshell and sex symbol, I thought Jayne Mansfield looked rather saggy and droopy in this picture. Her boobs look loooong. I bet she was stuck wearing a huge band...though it doesn't look like she could possibly wear anything at all in that dress.

That site is just a whole new low for women...

The few that had bra sizes listed are clearly wrong. Sigh. My job will never be done. I need to get some kind of Bramobile and do a cross country tour.

Jayne Mansfiled often went braless. There is a famous photo of her where you can see down the front of her dress and see her nipple. A friend of my husband's had that picture hanging in his bathroom. Doh!

The article said the average British woman has 16 bras. That seems like a lot to me. Granted, some people collect bras, so they probably have a ton of them, but I've actually known women who have 1 or 2 to their name. I'm guessing I have between 6-8, and that includes my 'desperate' bra - the uncomfortable lace minimizer I bought years ago that doesn't really fit anymore but I keep just in case I have absolutely nothing else clean to wear!

Well I"m the bra guru and I only have 3 bras (though I will have 4 once the one I got most recently with a store credit is finished with alterations). I don't think you need that many actually. I'm sure that number also includes sports bras as well.

Oh wait, I didn't include sports bras! I run a lot, so I have about 6-8 sports bras too.

Oh, Jane looks terrible...I think even Sophia believes in supporting the girls in such a low and revealing dress. Bras were awful back then....but better than nothing!!!
