Contemplating a new haircut

I think I am more scared than most people of going short because I have had 2 short haircuts in the past and both of them looked quite bad (one of them made me cry). I always felt as though they made my face look very wide and drew attention to my prominent nose. But I really love this haircut and even though my hair looks good the way it is, it's getting to be too labor intensive and I wonder if I should give it another try.

I have fine hair, medium to thick density. It tends to get flat on the top and heavy at the ends so I need a lot of layering. What do you guys think? I'd ask my stylist, but she is on maternity leave so I'm in a bit of a pickle.

Maya - it sounds like I have similar hair to yours and I have had a similar cut. I like this cut and don't think it is difficult to maintain. I thought that you posted a pic recently and I was looking for it to see your face shape but couldn't find it. I think that the long layers in the front won't feel like you have "short" hair.

AJ, I am pretty certain I have an oval face shape. I guess short hair is scary because there is so much more emphasis on your face. I don't think I have a bad or ugly face, but I do think long hair draws attention away from my face when I'm tired or my skin isn't looking so great. I wonder if I have to trade off my high maintenance hair for high maintenance makeup, which is not something I do now.

I should emphasize that I don't normally look that good :p

1) I was on a study abroad and had a tan
2) I wore makeup the entire time I was there
3) I was having a rocking great time and not stressed out/tired like I am now

You're beautiful and have gorgeous eyes! I think it would be a very flattering style. I like the length--not too short but definitely stylish. Looks like it would be easy to style with just a round brush.

Love it! I like how it frames your face. The longer hair draws my eye down. The shorter hair highlights your eyes and your lovely smile! I say "go for it!"

I think it looks great Maya! You have a very pretty face and beautiful eyes--you could definitely pull it off, don't even worry about that. The shorter cut makes you look more polished, I think (although, your long hair is very pretty as well).

I'm excited to see what you decide to do!

Definitely go for it! The cut frames your face very well. I don't think that you will have to wear more make-up than you normally do with short hair. This style will naturally highlight your eyes.

Maya, at the risk of sounding like a "yes man"...

I think you are freaking beautiful and it kills me that you don't think you can wear a shorter haircut. You have a beautiful complexion, great bone structure, gorgeous eyes and very exotic features that put you in the beautiful category. I think you are one of those people who does not see yourself the way the rest of the world does.

OK Nicole, so do you think I should cut it or not? :p Actually, I am not really hard on myself about my face. I mean, I go without makeup pretty deliberately. I just don't think I need it. But I'm not unrealistic either. I have large pores, lots of blackheads, and since I never get enough sleep, I tend to look very tired and a bit pale. All the pictures I have posted here are from vacations, so I'm pretty well rested and don't have any crazy circles under my eyes and the tan doesn't hurt either. It's not that I think I look "bad," I'm just acknowledging some issues that I don't want to be highlighted.

Well, I made an appointment with a girl who was recommended to me by my mom, but she's booked every weekend until Dec. 13 so I have a while to wait and think about it. I don't think I am willing to make such a dramatic change with a stylist I have never been to, so I might see how she does with the hair I have first. Or maybe I"ll just be impatient like I always am and let her have at it. She must do a good job if she's booked for a whole month!

Well Maya, I think you should cut it.

First of all, it's only hair, and it grows back. It also seems like your hair grows quickly.

Second of all, you know how it looks now--you have *some* idea how it will look shorter--but you will always have that nagging desire to really find out how it would look. So you might as well cut it, find out for sure if you like it, and never be able to say "I wish I had .... " It's much better to be able to say "I wish I hadn't...."

And third of all....You would look great! It would polish your look and really highlight your eyes!

Maya - I LOVE the shorter haircut. I think it would look fantastic on you. I know it will be a while until you get it cut, but I'm so excited for you. I think you will have a lot of fun getting a new haircut and going for something different. Can't wait to see pictures!
