Cons with a skirt?

I've tried the Clarks sneakers on today and they were really uncomfortable. Now I'm thinking about buying Cons after all. I was thinking about the low navy ones, but do they work with a skirt? When I hear about Cons and skirts I always think about something like image #2 and I definitely don't want that!

Another option would be to buy some practical but unstylish sneakers to go with the long jeans and only wear the Birks with skirts and shorts.

Urgh, I hate shoe shopping.

(I'm also a bit in love with the ones in #3, but they aren't really what I need, right?)

I think cons could work with a skirt if it had more volume and was shorter. And less tone-on-tone-on-tone like in #2.

Thanks Lyn. I was thinking of finally finishing my floral skirt to take that one with me. It would be (slightly over) knee length and full. And I'd buy the low Cons. So that should work? I have a friend that wears them like in #2 all the time and I never ever want to look like that.

I think the volume will help balance out the flat shoes ... at least; that is what I have found with my new attending who will not let me wear heels, so I have been wearing flats a lot.

How short are you willing to go for the skirt? I find converse only look good with short skirts, and from what I remember, your skirts are too long for what I think would suit a converse shoe (or any trainer, for that matter).

Glory, that would mean either the blue or the tan below, I guess. Do you have wide or narrow feet? I'm not sure if I like them better than the Cons. I think I've seen them somewhere recently, but I haven't tried them on. And they're more expensive!

Thanks Irene. Yes, that's a problem! I can't go shorter with my skirts because I simply don't have the legs for it. But I have that problem with all the closed shoes that are more practical/comfortable, they just don't look good with a skirt. Maybe I should just focus on finding practical shoes to wear with the bootcuts.

I'd be very careful of the cons and skirt look; to my eye, it is another of those very young and cheeky looks that can end up looking like picture #2 in a heartbeat.

On the other hand, why not consider the boots in picture #3? If you like them and they fit, they might be a perfect solution for your trip with the bonus of having some post-trip wearability as well. It seems to me they could sub for the hiking boots, but still offer styling potential for skirts because they don't look quite as rugged or gearish as your hiking boots. And you did say that you weren't planning a full-on hiking with a loaded backpack type of trip.

ETA: Wearing a pair of boots like #3 could also let you pack a lighter shoe for skirts when you were in less rugged conditions but didn't want to wear the Birks.

My feet are narrow to medium and these fit me really nicely. I wonder if perhaps a skecher might work for you? Something like these in these ones below? the second pic has a smaller heel

Thanks Gaylene! That's what I feared. You're right, #3 would be a good substitution for the hiking boots, I'm just not sure if I could break them in enough in the time I have left to walk comfortably all day in them. But they sure would get wear afterwards. I haven't actually tried them on yet, but the two Timberland boots I had here were really comfortable. Maybe I should order them just to try them, shipping and returns are free.

Thanks Glory. I have wide feet, so they might end up being too tight then. The ones you show would be practical for sure, but I just don't like the look of these kind of shoes.

I'm not a fan of the cons with a skirt. The one example you posted looks frumpy and the ones Irene posted look too tween. The only one I liked from those was #3 and I think it's because the straight mini looked like shorts. I agree with gaylene about trying shoe #3 or maybe looking at oxfords?

*lyn, that's weird that your attending won't let you wear heels. I've never had one comment on my shoes before :/

My daughters (who are teenagers) wear Cons, short wide skirts and thights all the time, and they look very cute! Opaque thights are good if you are conscious of your legs. In general, this is a fun look if the skirt is short (and wide) enough, like many have said already.

Thanks Kathy. I think you're right, I don't think I can pull it off in a good way with the things I have. I really love oxfords (with everything), but most of the ones I've seen are more dressy than practical. Still thinking about #3!

Thanks Ingunn. I agree that it can be a fun look, but maybe I'm a bit too old for it after all. I also wore Cons a lot in my teens, but I don't want to fall back on these looks!

I think those boots might be worth a try. Personally, I've found that some "hiking-style" boots are made of much softer leather and don't require the break-in time of the heavier, true hiking boot. If the boot is a comfortable fit on your feet, you might find it quite comfortable just out of the box, especially if you are wearing it with good socks. (Although I will admit to always having a couple of blister pads in my handbag whenever I'm wearing a new shoes. If I carry the pads with me, I never have to use them; if I don't have them, I'll get a blister everytime! LOL)

And you probably know this, but I will add that I've found out the hard way that SOCKS do matter. I once wore a pair of cheapo, cotton socks which resulted in a heel blister after a couple of miles; fortunately, I was near a town so I went in a department store, bought a pair of $20 cotton socks and was able to walk for the rest of the day in total comfort with just a bandage to protect the blister. That taught me a lesson. My current favorites are the SmartWool socks-- not cheap, but worth every penny.

Yes, blister pads are a good idea, I'll definitely take some with me. You're right about the socks, it really makes a difference. I only have one pair of really good ones, but that would be something I would be ready to spend some money on. I'm just not sure if I should get the 7 or the 7.5. The boots were a 7.5, but they still had a bit room in the toes. But I'm not sure if the 7 wouldn't be too small.

Lyn, I could but it would be better not to. They use Paypal and it could be a while until I would get the money for the second pair back.

OK, I'm not suggesting these for you because they might be a bit too old ladyish, but I keep packing these Romika sandals in my suitcase as my alternate, wear-with-skirts shoe on trips. They are super light-weight, squishable in my suitcase, and have a bit of a heel so they look good with skirts and dresses. But, best of all, they are 16-hour, walking over cobblestones and country roads shoes because they cover most of the foot and don't flop around. If I'm not wearing my full-on walking shoes, these are on my feet.

Just thought I'd plant an idea for an alternate, easy-to-pack, walking sandal that works with skirts if you take your hiking boots for the rougher stuff. Mine are in sold black, but the blue is not bad-- maybe it's time for a replacement pair.

I like the timberlands too and think you should try them! I think Cons only look good w/ skirts when the skirt is short and you wear it with bare legs and no visible socks. Doesn't seem like your style and it's not very practical anyway.

I could see the timberlands with a fuller skirt and tights.

Thanks Diana! You're right, that doesn't seem to be my style. I could see the Timberlands the way you described it, I think they would definitely also get worn later on. I hope they'll fit!

Glad you decided on the Timberlands and I hope they work for you. I've had a hard time with Clarks lately too (I also have wide feet). Have you tried Hush Puppies, Merrells or Aerosoles? I've had luck with all of those recently. Aerosoles wides are on sale today (just got e-mail) no promo code required.

Astrid, sorry, but I am not really liking it either with the long skirt and cons. I went back to your last post and I really liked the clarks that you posted. Have you decided not to do those ?

The Clark's are the way to go, IMO.

Thanks Isabel - I have comfortable sandals for whole day walking (the Birks), so I don't need those. I need closed shoes just in case it's colder.
