conference wear? - YouLookFab Forum

Hello YLF ladies, I've been away for a while--it's been a very busy time, with defending and graduating. But I've been a lurker off and on and seen so many beautiful outfits from all of you

I wanted some advice from the YLF crowd--I am going to a weeklong scientific conference tomorrow, at which I am not giving just one but two talks, on successive days. Because they're back to back, I don't feel comfortable wearing the same thing. I usually wear a buttondown blouse+dress pants (keep in mind, this is science--many of the presenters will show up in jeans, though it runs the gamut from t-shirt and jeans to full suits on some of the speakers, especially the ones from Japan and Korea). I was thinking of wearing another buttondown blouse tucked into an A-line suiting skirt (http://bananarepublic.gap.com/.....=229765002)

Do I need to wear hose with it? The skirt comes to my knees and is definitely not too short. I have gone bare-legged wearing skirts to this conference before, but that was not on a day I was presenting.

And I certainly hope ballet flats are OK

I personally think that this nice skirt with a buttondown is OK without hose and with flats, especially for a summer conference. I have definitely worn pencil skirts sans hose to conferences with a mix of PhDs/MDs (so a slightly more formal crowd); not for presentations, though (I usually stick to pants for talks, just so that I don't have to worry about hose/footwear etc.). Is this for a poster presentation?

Hi Makrame--thanks for your answer. This conference is in CA in June, so that's why I thought of going sans hose. No, it's not for a poster presentation--two 15 minute talks (but I am definitely going to wear a blouse+pants for one of them). So actually a shorter duration of time than a poster presentation would be.

Yes, it's fine to go sans hose! I honestly think there's almost no situation in science that requires hose (unless you are cold) any more these days.

I much prefer to give talks than posters!

I think if you are giving a talk, I prefer hose over bareleg - but most of the people that I know who are giving talks are men.

Devil's advocate: I would wear hose. For me it is more about my own style than the crowd's. I know some stylish scientists/doctors.
The skirt is going to be a real workhorse.
With ballet flats - not sheer hose, if at all
With heels, I vote hose.
Hope your presentation goes well.

Thanks, Lyn* and Archer. I found a pair of sheer hose that matches my skin tone, so I packed it. I didn't think I had one, so I wasn't going to go and buy one--but since I had it, there was no harm in throwing it in my bag. I'll see how I feel tomorrow morning about it.

I'd skip the hose since you'll be in CA. I'm planning on skipping the hose when I present at a conference in CA at the end of July.

The skirt looks like it'll be a great workhorse for you. And congrats on defending and graduating!
