How can I wear my flat combat boots to work?

I really wanted to wear them today with the grey lace skirt and purple jumper I'm wearing, but you know, not a good idea. A bit too gritty. My workplace is fashionable (that is, I see a lot of Tory Burch shoes)... and it's casual (I could have a streak of blue in my hair)... but there's a clear, silent line. This is a fortress of niceness.

I'm so tired of little slipper, Duchess Kate shoes (with all due respect to Prince William's lovely bride). I miss my shoes!
