Cocoon Coat Flop?

I bought a cocoon coat I asked you all about. And I am not sold on it. :/

Firstly, I did not buy the original MANGO version. I read many reviews online. Only 15-20% of the reviews were positive. Some complained of the fabric being cheap and thin. Several reviews said the fabric pilled after a single wear. I was not purchasing the coat from Poshmark with zero returns, only to have the fabric pill. And not for $65-100+.

I found what seems like a reasonable version of it in a gorgeous tobacco brown colorway. However... either it's the cut of this specific garment OR it's the overall style because... I don't think I look or feel all that YLF in it.

Am I a Jedi knight or Christina Hendricks in this?? What do you all think?

I actually bought the coat in TWO sizes. The first size was way too big. This size actually has nice ease, I'm just not convinced of the style or lines on me.

I workshopped it with a dress, belted (over the coat) and with jeans and a wrap blouse.

There are times in the past when Angie and Fabbers convinced me that a style or item actually was good on me. With time, I came around to agree. So I don't want to miss something if it's good. And yet... I can't tell if this is truly good.

I've considered just getting the MANGO version and seeing if it is better. But the many reviews of poor fabric didn't thrill me. Maybe I need to keep looking OR just give up on the idea?

Sorry KET I'm not a fan. I giggled out loud at the Jedi Knight pic and then scrolled back and unfortunately there is a similarity. Next, as ANGIE says.

Lise, I'm also not a fan. When I tried it on and it felt off all I could think of was Jedi Knight hahaha! Glad it gave you a giggle

Lise, thank you for that!! I guess I was worried I was missing out--I do love the trend. But the bad reviews are not giving me confidence!

I think you look more like Kristina Hendricks in it, and it gives a cool-girl vibe in 5, with your hand in the pocket. Her use of a cross-body bag over it is nice, so you might try it with your new b-day purse. Other than pic 5, I do think it has a kind of shapelessness, which to my eye doesn't work so well with the dress. I'm not crazy about the belt over the coat; I would prefer this style to be kept loose and oversized.

So I guess my feelings are a bit mixed! LOL.

I'd say maybe keep looking. And don't buy a non-returnable item that has bad reviews. There may be other coats in this style that you'll find to try.

You need to love it. The color is okay but not fabulous. With the belt it looks fine, but I think a belt like that is a nuisance and would avoid if possible.

The jedi knight picture cracked me up! Okay, I see it. I find this look not great. Not awful, because the color is great on you but I think you can find a style that is better. I would keep looking for a coat that checks all the things you want. Maybe a more heavy sweater like coat in chocolate brown might be better? Especially since browns are huge this season. Good luck!! I will be looking for a better version on you when you find it.

I agree with you - not a great fit. Looks too bulky to me, although color is gorgeous on you.

I don’t dislike this but I don’t love it either. I think the brown would be better if it was darker. I think there will be better ones out there.

Your face says it all, Ket. I'm not a fan of this one, and I do love a good cocoon coat and have several. The fabric on this one seems thin, and it hangs unevenly. There are many versions of cocoon coats, and if you want to pursue this style, I'm sure you'll find one that ticks all your boxes.

I think there are better coats out there. Also, this conversation has reminded me, I have a sewing pattern and some knitting patterns for some really luxurious wrap coats. Maybe not the same as cocoon coats, but super luxurious. Maybe this is my version of a cocoon coat...?

You crack me up with the Jedi knight. I think it looks really good over the dress and the jeans. Not feeling the belt with it. But that said, it would not break my heart to see you send it back. It’s true the a big long cozy sweater thing may fill this niche for you more satisfyingly.

Yes, 1, 2, and 3 are cocoon styles. I can see all of these styles on you, Ket. Sewing one could be pretty quick!.

I’m with Star. I did have to laugh at the Jedi knight and feel an unfortunate similarity!
It is a good colour on you, and does remind me of your clove cardigan as well. I don’t like coats with ties around the middle though, I always think they look like what I call a dressing gown. (Which some would call a bathrobe). I can’t get that out of my head either so I have never tried such a coat.

To me a cocoon coat has a distinct curve and this one looks more straight. I would not give up on the idea just this version. I am not overly impressed with the Mango items I have seen, although there are always exceptions. Sewing one yourself does sounds exciting if you are up for it!

This version isn't right - it's a no and I agree with the others - although it's great to have a comparison. The "no's" make the "yes's" stand out!

A more structured cocoon coat is key. Not a flimsy version like this thinner knit with drive-you-crazy-all-over-the-place shawl collar. (Although I'm a big Jedi Knight fan ).

You want a woven cocoon coat, or thick knitted sweater coat. The topper needs HEFT and an architectural shape. That version will make you look better than Christina Hendricks!

LOL, maybe you look like both Christina Hendricks, and a Jedi Knight. I like the coat, but it is hard to see which size is which in your pictures. It is certainly not a feminine silhouette, but it works. It's more of an Ally Sheedy, Breakfast Club look. Going great with Converse, Doc Martens, ska shoes, that kind of thing.

I agree with the others. I don't like the way it hangs kind of crooked, seems too unstructured for you. I think a wrap version could be awesome. Love the patterns you have.

My immediate thought was that you’d benefit from a coat with more structure at your shoulder line so that I hangs rather than “ sits “ on you , if you know what I mean . And as Angie said , a true cocoon coat has more shape and definition .

I'm with others that this has a Jedi knight vibe. I think something more structured would be a lovely option instead.

I’ve tried a few of these cardigan style coats (thin, unlined, no structure to shoulders or collar) and haven’t been thrilled. So I agree with Angie‘s pointers. Unfortunately I think great quality wool coats are hard to find these days, puffer have really taken over.

Jenni, I do love clove brown too. And I agree some belted coats can look very "bath robe" (dressing gown).

Well, you all saved me! I have returned the coat. I'm going to look for a good woven (or wool) cocoon coat with some structure and shape. As Angie said above: the "no's" help us see the "yeses'" and this was definitely a NO ha!
