Coats over coats

Great look!!! Question: Do you buy your top coats a size larger? How can you possibly fit that gorgeous coat over the motorcycle jacket and it not be too tight? I always wonder this. Thanks

I'm not Angie, but as someone who lives in a cold climate, I always buy my overcoats large enough to layer over a jacket. Many coats are cut generously to allow for that in the first place; others are not and you may have to size up.

There are exceptions. For example, I have a pea coat that is a bit tricky to layer over jackets because the armholes are higher cut. But I did wear it over a jacket yesterday - it works best if the under jacket is a smooth fabric, not wool tweed, which would catch.

Not Angie, but a good fitting jacket doesn't seem to take up any more room than a bulky sweater. I usually wear dress length trench or puffer over jackets with ease. Short coats don't seem to work as well.

I have problems with wearing anything other than a regular top under my peacoats as the arms get too snug, but I prefer the fitted look on jackets so I shouldn't complain there. As for coats, I only have one which will allow as many layers as I want underneath, think 2 sweaters+ top+ cami (extra cold NY winter days spent walking), and it's a black A line coat- very formal and of almost knee length. Surprisingly it doesn't look big on me when I don't have as many layers underneath! Even so, I reserve this coat for extra cold days or formal night outs because I prefer the look of a more fitted silhouette.

Coat on coat I do but the inner coat is more of a long sweater that is warm without the bulk and so fits beneath my other fitted coats easily. (I seem to have rambled a lot here)

Ah, in all honesty I do buy coats with barely enough room for layering. I like my clothes tailored and my coats are no exception. I don't mind feeling snug.

I ALWAYS make sure my coats can accommodate a jacket - with tops, sweaters and thermal undies. I get very cold and must layer up. I will not buy a coat if does not fit in this way.

Sizing up does not always work. You have to find the right fit.

I don't buy all coats to fit over a jacket, but I try to have at least one for every season. and some that fit perfectly. I have 3 right now, fall rain, chilly winter, serious cold winter. I might be missing spring, but I just bought 5 coats in the last year...so I may have to skip it.

Some brands cut for extra room for layering and others don't. You just have to try on a lot.

I don't wear coats over leather jackets but I do wear over blazers or thick sweaters, so I make sure to try my coats on with those layers to make sure they fit. My problem is usually the upper arms.
