Maya, if you had your mind made up - why did you bother with this poll?

I'm going to throw in a second vote for the red I don't think the double-breast buttoning is a problem at all.

I didn't have my mind made up as of the time of the posting, Angie.

Both coats have their benefits and drawbacks. I look good in red and I know that. It's my favorite color for a reason. But I don't always have to look glowing and radiant. Tweed might not be glowy on me (is it on anyone?), but it's not unflattering either. I guess ultimately I had more concerns about the styling than the color, and the double-breastedness bothered me a lot more than the tweed.

The belt is definitely not adjustable on the red one. It's fixed in position at the back, and there is only one button in the front. Am I missing something?

I still don't have my mind made up now, since so many people are still pulling for red. I would have liked to get both, but...

Honestly, I'm probably going to lose the red anyway. I have it on hold, but I have to work from home tomorrow, and they will only hold it for 24 hours. It was the last one left.

If the tweed one is no good, I might just pass on both of them.

Red,
looks to be a better fit

Initially I was disappointed that I couldnt take part in the poll due to lack of descriptions, but now I'm engrossed in the drama after Angie's elephantine spanner.
What wardrobe function will this coat fulfill, Maya? Are you looking for a warmer option so you can leave the spring/fall looks to the red Guess coat?

Michelle, starting tomorrow it will be in the 40's, so I really need to get my winter wool coat hunt sorted. I'm looking for a warmer option because I need a warmer option. Right now!

I wanted to replace my too small Banana Republic coat last year, but I didn't have a job so it just wasn't possible. Now I do but I can't seem to find anything that works. They're all too short, not warm and wooly enough, or just not the right style. I have comrpomised on coats for my entire life because of price. For once I wanted to buy something really nice.

I found these two and liked them about equally when I first posted, but it looks like the tweed one isn't getting much love among the YLF commentariat and I'm just feeling less and less sure about the double breasted style of the red one, so now I'm thinking I might just need to tolerate another mediocre yet cheap coat for another year, or squeeze back into the BR coat for one more season.

Do you love the tweed? If so, any reason why you can't wear it?
Am I weird for wearing leather jackets in the 40's and literally only breaking out the wool coat when the temperature dips below freezing?

I thought I loved the tweed, but the responses have not been enthusiastic (although everyone loved it on the model). I think it might just be because everyone is so taken with the color of the red one. But a few people have mentioned fit and sleekness as well. I don't know. The tweed one definitely didn't photograph as well. Hard to say. But I can't make such a major purchase without YLF approval. I am too needy! I think if the red one wasn't double breasted, I would have gone for it.

And no, we all have different internal thermostats. I run a little bit on the cold side.

I'm pretty sure I didn't love the tweed on the model either. I'll have to go back and look. Weren't the other choices grey?

I can't decide either, but it's probably because I haven't given up on the S&K. Sorry to be so difficult.

Patience, they're both S&K!

Una, I didn't post any other choices. The Mia was purple, but Angie voted in favor of a belted style. I don't really wear a lot of gray near the face unless it's supplemented heavily by another color.

My current coat is black and white tweed, and that seemed to get good reviews. Perhaps since I have lost weight it might fit better than it did last year and I can just relieve myself of this process. I hadn't even thought of that...

Red is just such an attention getting color...but this tweed in particular is SO graphic and YOU, Maya...it's not some "old lady" tweed. (Just thought I'd toss another vote in as well for the tweed. heh.)

One last plug for the red coat so big bossy me says:

-Unless you are physically uncomfortable in the red coat I see no style disadvantages what so ever. That's a K to the power of K coat. End of story.

-You desperately need a bit of colour in your very black wardrobe. Despite the fact that you are a New Yorker, you actually love bright colours.

- The quality is sublime. I wear S&K.

Over and out. No more coat comments from me and I'm sure you're relieved to hear that.

Ok, big bossy Angie. I will try and have them hold it for me for an extra day. We have a leak in the basement so I have to stay home tomorrow and let the guys in to fix it. Hope they'll let me hold it until Friday or it will almost certainly sell out

I think that the tweed pattern/color might be throwing this. I suspect that if the tweed coat were solid red, everyone would love it. The problem with the tweed, I think, is that in the photos the pattern/color looks busy. With the red, the solid color makes the coat look sleeker and you can see more of the lines. I really think that part of the issue here is that the mottled look of the tweed just doesn't photograph as well.

I believe that Una might be talking about the first S&K coat you posted yesterday. I think it was called the Mia, or something like that, and it came in grey. But it sounds like that's not in the running.

Personally, I love your solution to get the Guess coat in red and the S&K coat in tweed. You will get a lot of use out of the Guess coat when the weather is more temperate, and the S&K coat will be great when it is colder. I think you should trust your instincts--you are discerning and have a good idea of what looks good on you.

(Oh, and Michelle, I wore a faux leather jacket today in 45 degree temperatures with 20 mph winds, so you're not the only one!)

One last comment, you might not need another coat for temperate weather as Steph suggests - you just thrifted a coat to fill that gap.

Angie, Maya said she found a red wool Guess coat that she loves at Macy's on super sale that would be for weather that isn't super cold, and she can afford to get that AND an S&K coat.

RE the belt, Maya, can't the button be moved by a tailor to adjust the fit? Just thinking out loud. My first impression is "go red", so I'm just being repetitious. But if you don't love it, don't get it.

FWIW, Michelle, we had weather in the 20's last week and I was wearing leather. I don't own a wool coat, though I do have a sweater coat. Kind of wishing I did!

It's like a soap opera...I'm riveted! lol

Stay tuned for further developments......

But Maya just thrifted a coat like that Steph - why purchase another one with the S&K coat?

Andrea, precisely. The button can be sewn into another position!

I do find myself wishing that coat was longer, I must admit. Looks silly when bits of tunic are sticking out from under it.

But as I said, I will do my best to get the red coat in my possession. I intend to buy it on Friday morning and wear it out of the store. The SA's who helped me today were all very nice so hopefully they will continue their nice streak tomorrow...

Angie, Steph was referring to the Guess coat. It is the same weight as the thrifted coat, but longer. It's quite inexpensive and would have been my pick if it were thicker and warmer.

Well Angie, I'm not Maya, but if I go to a store and I really love something and it looks good on me and I can afford it, then...I buy it! It sounds like that's the case here, and it satisfies the desire everyone seems to have to see Maya in a red coat.

I haven't read through all the responses but as much as I like the red color on you, I prefer the tweed because I find the neck on the red jacket a little off. It looks like it swallows your neck. Maybe it would work better if you had shorter hair? I also like the graphic quality of the tweed.

Oh, so many posts are coming up I can't keep up! *goes back to read*

Of course, Steph! There is value in your reasoning But Maya is always on a very tight budget and duplication at this point is not the best idea when a killer winter coat is at stake. I hope that makes sense too.

No, I understand. But the killer coat isn't at stake because she said she would buy the Guess coat AND the S&K coat, so the Guess coat doesn't really factor into the decision here. (Maya, tell me to shut up if I'm getting this wrong, but I think I have it right.)

Steph, I think my understanding is that Angie just doesn't find the tweed coat killer, so it would be like 2 mediocre coats instead of one killer coat...

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Well maybe you need to post a photo of the red Guess coat. Maybe that would be killer too.

Oh yay, I'm glad that you are going to go for the red coat. I hope that it works! The color is amazing on you.

I guess I'm not behind just in time zone.... Steph is right, I was thinking of an earlier post of a coat that is not in the running, which I also liked better than the tweed.
