Coat collecting: need advice - YouLookFab Forum

I just found this NWT JCrew collarless coat in red on ebay, my size, $135 (or I could make an offer for less). Should I get it?

I tried it on last year in black -- pics here: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....crew-coats. I loved it then, as did many of you -- but I was shopping for a warmer coat.

My current coat capsule includes:
A heavyweight camel wool cocoon coat (new last year)
A bright pink peacoat (at least 5 years old)
A lightweight nubbly wool pale gray short coat with bell sleeves (new last year)

PROS:
It's lightweight wool, refined, fits well, sleek looking, and RED.
CONS:
It's July, do I need another coat?

My mother is visiting right now, and that can be an impulse-shopping trap for me. She has dementia, and it's always exhausting. She's doing well, but she no longer recognizes me as a daughter, just as a friend she hasn't seen in a long time -- so it's a bit hard.

What do you think? Right now, I don't have any fall wish list items but it is early. Should I save my pennies, or should I spring for this coat?

I so sorry for you. I do love the coat, but it might be an impulse buy. Perhaps you should wait?

I looked at the linked thread and the black version was very nice on you. I find red can be a hard color for many people. Have you seen the red in person to make sure it works for you? If so, it looks like a good purchase since it is a shape you know works. Are you planning to retire any of your existing coats? Do you need/want another coat option?

Hmmm, more questions that answers here but perhaps they will help you make the right choice.

You'd need to see the red on you. And...are you thinking of it because you regretted returning the black one all season, or regretted that the black one was black?

I am sorry things are so tough with your mother. I understand. I am off to see my own mother this weekend before my trip...

the fit and cut of the black are so perfect. I am partial to this sort of cut - clean, chic, modern - and red! What fun. I also have a weakness for outwear. I have a similarly cut black topper that I wear all the time, probalby lighter-weight (spring/fall coat) than this, but if I owned any piece that defines me it is that coat. so I love this coat. . . You know it fits. If returnable give it a try!

I like it. It seems just the right price to experiment with a new colour - and the styling is so classic and simply I don't see how you can go wrong. (unless the colour is a complete bust, but I can't see how it would be).

Sorry things have progressed this far with your mom. I know how tough a time this is. I am in the process just this week of trying to get my mom into a personal care home (yesterday she announced she was ready to die) and it's about all I can do to stay sane. I ordered 2 dresses in the process.

I say go for it. Winters are long here in New England and anything to brighten up your wardrobe is a smart buy! I bought a red duffle coat last year on impulse and I wore it all the time. I think in this climate you need a selection of outerwear.

The black one looked very pretty on you. I would try the red one, if it is returnable, or if you have seen this colour instore and know you'll love it.

I tend to think this a good buy. It is classic, flattering and a great price. In your part of the world I am sure you will get lots of wear from it.

I like it, would think the color would look good on you, and four coats for you where you live isn't crazy at all. The lack of collar might be a downside when it's super-cold, but maybe you're a scarf person?

Love this coat! It's got such a classic yet fun look. If it is returnable (because you need to like the red on you), I'd go for it.

Do you want another lightweight coat in your coat capsule? Do you want another bright color in your capsule? You opted not to purchase the black version because you wanted a warmer coat. Did you regret not buying the black one? If so, is the red version really the one you want? Would you purchase the red version, or the black, if both were side-by-side at full price?

I loved the black coat on you last year, but I'm speaking as someone who also used online shopping as a distraction when I was dealing with my mom's dementia. It's a hard time and I can totally understand how a cheerful red coat on sale can be an irresistible lure. Just make sure it's the coat you want, not the distraction.

I could see that coat working so well for you! I also understand the desire for another fresh coat look, especially since your winters up there are longer and drearier than many others. I know that even though I have a warm burgundy wool coat, the turquoise wool peacoat was a definite boost to my winter coat color palette.

Thank you everyone - for the warm friendships and for the wisdom. I really can't decide about this coat. For now, I just keep visiting it on ebay, and visiting it seems to be enough. I may buy it, I may not. I really don't know. I can't seem to get up enough energy to make a decision, so I'm not pushing it.
