closet storage question

Hi there...I've been reading the blog but just signed up for the forum. I am blessed with a largeish closet. But, I have really bad patience when it comes to folding tops.

I have quite a few nice knitted tops from Banana Republic. I'm not sure the content. Rayon? Silk? Cashmere? Blends of the above?

I'm wondering how to decide what tops I can hang without ruining them, and what tops I must fold for their own preservation.

Until this weekend I folded everything: this weekend I hung up any top that had hanging loops sewn in from the manufacturer. Was that a good tip that hanging was appropriate?

Is there anything else I can hang?

Wovens tend to hold their shape better when hung- so hang any woven tops. I'd fold the knit ones.

I hang as much as possible as they get less creased that way. Shirts, cardigans and jumpers are all hung the knit ones i hang on special wollies coat hanger which are wide and made of a rubbery material so things don't slip off. x

This year I ended up folding most all my sweaters and hanging them over the pant bar on the hanger. I hope that makes sense. . .

I only actually hang (the normal way) knits that are very stable so there won't be popped shoulders, droopy arms or hems, etc.

I also started to invest in those Huggable hangers - the velvety but thin kind - and I'm very pleased with knits staying put on them. My husband finds those hangers annoying as it always takes two hands to get anything safely off the hanger.

I apologize for this ending up in the wrong forum. I thought I'd posted in the "Everything else" forum-I messed up somewhere. Is it possible to move it to the correct forum?

Thanks for your input. I'm afraid it isn't terribly definitive for me. It seems that people might be saying to fold them: but then I've got a few suggestions for appropriate hangers for them.

When I say "knitted tops" I mean either a fine knit thin sweater, or something more like a Tshirt. I think they might stretch less than a chunkier knit or a hand knit.

I have some jacket hangers that have almost a sandblasted texture to them and wider/rounded shoulders. I think they might be best for knits with sleeves. I am pretty sure that things will stay put on them...I'm just worried about stretching the neckline or them hemline.

I've moved my knitted vests (like a tank top but a thicker winter weight) to regular wooden shirt hangers with non slip shoulders. They're staying put, and since the garments have no shoulders there will be no shoulder points. My concerns about neck stretching or hem stretching are still there though...

Re post moving they can't be moved but don't worry even us veterans put them in the wrong place sometimes.

T shirts i fold in a drawer but i've got a couple of banded tops in t shirt material which i hang, because they are voluminous they would crease if folded. Heavy jumpers and cardis i would fold because i would feel the weight would likely weigh down on the hanger causing hanger marks but thin knits i would hang but only on wider coat hangers. I fold Tank tops

I don't think there are any definative rules i think it could just be trial and error for what works for you x

I always fold sweaters. Knits are an "it depends" thing. It depends on two things:

1) will it leave a dent in the shoulder? (Huggable hangers prevent this)
2) does it wrinkle easily?

On that last point, no matter how well I fold, my folded knit tops always seem to come unfolded and get messed up in the drawer! You learn through experience which knit tops can handle this sort of drawer mayhem, and still come out relatively wrinkle free.

In my experience, nearly every Banana Republic knit top needs to go on a hanger. They will wrinkle! It's the Ann Taylor Outlet, H&M, F21, Gap and Old Navy knit tops that can handle drawer mayhem.
