Closet space and wardrobe size

Do you feel like your closet space determines your wardrobe size? In other words, if you had a huge closet, would you buy more? I am trying to decide whether to physically restrict myself to "my" side of the closet (since I've encroached on husband's) and if it would help me feel like restraining myself. I know it's really all in my head, but I'm curious to know what the "small wardrobe" gals say about this.

I also have a very small closet. I actually use half of the closet in the kids' room because mine is just that small. I'll take a picture in a minute to prove it. It certainly limits how many clothes I can have. One thing that helps is that I use those slim velvet hangers. I got cases of them at Costco for fairly cheap.

I used to have a small closet...outgrew that...then had a small walk in, outgrew that, now I have a small room converted to a closet...I think you may be on to something!! ...

If you asked me this a few years ago I would say yes. I purchased more and more as my closet space grew. But that also brought me frustration and high bills. After all I kept buying and buying and not wearing it all anyway. I would donate clothes too often, never worn with tags. That's wasteful. Now I am trying to pare down my wardrobe to a workable, useable size, and not worry about the space. The extra space can be used for other items for storage.

I don't know. I don't think that I would have a larger wardrobe if I had more space- things would just be more organized (especially accessories). I really like having a small, manageable wardrobe.

Hmm, I have a fairly large walk-in closet ( two of them actually), and a pretty large wardrobe too, so there is definitely a correlation there

I have a small wardrobe (and no dresser). Each side is about a metre wide (maybe less actually!)- in one side I have 3 shelves for cardis, tees, leggings and 4 built in drawers for underwear, socks, pjs and shorts and a small (maybe 50cm wide) long hanging space for dresses and coats. Underneath this is 3 shelves for shoes. The other side has double hanging rails- it's no where near full (and is sorted by colour). My boots sit underneath the double hanging rails.

I actually looked at my (entirely full now) shoe shelves yesterday and was SO pleased- I feel like my shoe wardrobe is complete now

All my necklaces and belts hang on a tie rack with the coats and dresses.

I'm at saturation point with my wardrobe at the moment- I have spent SO much money in the last 4 months getting my wardrobe built up from being shlepping to class uni student attire to being more stylish and put together. I'm on a shopping ban until Christmas in order to force myself to learn to work with my new clothes and not let them go to waste!

Hmmm, my budget rather than space constraints ensure a streamlined wardrobe. If my budget grew I'm sure I would fill out all of the available space. I think achieving a workable wardrobe is the ultimate goal.

YLF caused me to fill up my closet and spill over (just a bit) to my daughter's closet/room (she lives at school now). When it got to this point it also exceeded my needs and has begun to 'confuse' me. I feel the stress of unworn items that I'm not sure now to incorporate and wonder if I really need to incorporate them at all. (I am now realizing there are some 'looks' I really don't need to try to make work!)

I think the extra space some people have lets them keep adding without making those tough removal decisions.

I'm now trying to cut down to fit back into my original space - the elusive smaller more efficient wardrobe.

This is always such a journey . . !!

As a person that has moved from a house with a big walk-in closet to a smaller double-bar closet...I can report the following observations. Having a large closet allows you to collect clothes and keep clothes that you may or may not need or want in your wardrobe. In my experience, this lead to many thoughtless purchases and keeping things "just in case". Often things went unworn since i never SAW them after a certain point. Now that my wardrobe is easily 1/3 the size it was...perhaps smaller since I just purged through all the stuff in storage totes...I'm finding I am more thoughtful with my purchases, more creative with my outfits and more attached to all my pieces that have remained.

I keep my seasonal work wardrobe in a small french-door closet in my bedroom with a 15 compartment shoe cubicle in the bottom; purses are arranged neatly upright on top of the cubicle. I use a five rung pants rack to neatly organize my viscose scarves. A large antique chest of drawers in my bedroom holds all my lingerie, knits and jeans.

A small part of the closet in the guest room/office (converted after my precious son moved out on his own) provides space for a few casual summer items and my winter boots and scarves. I keep all of my off season clothes in a small closet downstairs.

My wardrobe isn't huge, I just have it conveniently located, culled out and organized. And I just shuffled everything around for AUTUMN! It's a lovely 73 degrees today.

I will admit: If I had a huge, walk-in closet, I would be in organized-wardrobe heaven!
