Looking back I realize I didn’t set any style goals for 2022. I remember wanting to nudge my style in some new direction, but hadn’t fixed on any idea or theme. My style descriptors are: practical, classic, minimalist. Tomboy has always figured in my moniker along with a modifier (.Elegant for several years, then Happy in the giddy, colourful time post retirement and pre-pandemic.)
Despite the lack of a plan, I can identify some patterns. New purchases were basics heavy in neutral colours, and I was much more discerning when it came to fit.
Replacing basics. My closet grew with the addition of 35 new items of which 17 were navy blue, 6 were black, and 5 were in neutrals like white, beige, or grey. 7 items were colours or prints. 30 items were either off a shopping list or HEWI’s (fisherman’s sandals, chunky Aran sweater). 5 were impulse purchases and non neutrals (lilac sneakers and sweater, orange patterned button down, multicoloured reversible dress, olive linen trousers). Most items were traditional classics though a few were cut along modern lines.
Attention to fit. I have been fussier about fit this year and it affected what I kept and what I edited. I ordered and returned several pairs of shorts and fisherman’s sandals, experimented with oversized winter coats (thrifted and new) before settling on a fitted tailored one, and fussed over a plaid suit until I got sizes right. I donated a dress, a topper, and a pair of pants that were in good shape, but ill fitting.
Conservative additions to an already classic heavy closet resulted in mostly casual outfits with conventional silouhettes. Interest came from colour, texture, juxtaposition and bookending rather then being ‘on trend’.
Some
numbers. Year 3 of wear counting is coming to an end. I have stats on 43/90 closet items (all in Finds). I counted the # of wears for tops and bottoms, but not toppers, outerwear, footwear and accessories - there’s just too much off-and-on to keep accurate numbers.
11 items < 10 wears - however, new in 2022
6 items < 10 wears - older than 1 year (mostly occasion wear)
14 items 10-30 wears
9 items 30-60 wears
3 items 60+ (2 pair identical Levis 721 share 174 wears or 87 each, and 1 pair white jean shorts at 64 wears)
Of the 17 or so items edited - most wore out, got faded or stained, or sustained a laundry mishap. Of those that were tracked - the lowest # of wears was 37 and the greatest was 64. Of items that were passed on the # of wears were 5, 8, and one was untracked.
I’m pondering goals for 2023, along with a a modifier to my tomboy monicker and a word and colour. Will post in the new year. In the interim, a dozen outfits from this year and my 2022 colour palette.
