clicking on links

Hi Greg,

sometimes when I'm on ylf I try to control-click on a link in order to open the link in a new tab, but it rarely works. This problem seems to be specific to the ylf site. Do you know how I can avoid navigating away from the main site when clicking on a link?

Hi Adelfa,

I assume that since you mention "control-click" you are using Windows. Is that correct?

If so, which browser are you using? I have tried this with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome, and ctrl-click opens new tab for me in those browsers.

Of course it might be a problem with specific links on YLF that I haven't tried, so if you can point me to one or two where ctrl-click isn't working, that would be great.

Finally, when you say it "rarely works", can you elaborate on what happens when it doesn't work? For example, does the link open in the current window, or perhaps not at all?

Hi Greg, I am running Chrome on a mac. Control-click is the equivalent of right-click on a PC.

In several of Angie's recent posts, such as the recent NAS posts, the linked items appear in new tabs when clicked. This is much appreciated.

An example of when it doesn't is in her recent Okala Pump post. When you click on the last word "cheetah," the link opens in the same tab, and I have to hit the back button to get Angie back.

When I control-click the link and select "Open link in new tab," I do get the link in the new tab--however, the link also appears in the original tab. This is what often happens.

As a counterexample, if I go to si.com and control-click on the cover story (where it says "full story" under the photo), I can get the story in a new tab while preserving my si.com page in the original tab.

Obviously this is not a big deal--I'm just wondering why the ylf links behave differently.

I'm also on a Mac, and I also use Chrome. I don't see this happen though so I'm a bit stumped. I don't think there is anything special about the YLF links that would make them behave that way.

One thing you could try is using command-click to open a link in a new tab without opening the context menu. Let me know if this also has the effect of opening the link in both the current tab and a new tab.
