Circle scarf confusion/rant - YouLookFab Forum

Last year I bought a black circle scarf with red metalic thread to go with my red wool coat. However, I didn't really wear it since I need a scarf to keep my neck warm and I seemed to be unable to wrap it tightly enough to keep the wind and cold air away from my neck.

I also searched the internet and all pics show circle scarfs hanging loose or at least looser around the neck and down the chest area. What the heck? So what's the point of wearing one if it doesn't keep you warm? Is it purely an aesthethic item?

Sorry, for the mini rant! I love the look of circle scarfs but it's really frustrating not to be able to wear one for such a trivial reason :-/ The scarf is pretty bulky so I can't really wear it in spring transitional weather as it reads winter and I am also unable to wear it now (i.e. fall) since it doesn't keep me protected.

What am I missing here, girls? Is there a special technique of wrapping it? I found only one way to make it stick really close to my neck and keep me warm and that is wrapping in the traditional European loop just like a regular scarf.

If the scarf is bulky enough (like the one in your photo) it will sort of squish up around your neck when you button up your coat. You can pull it up a bit so only the bottom part of the scarf is under your coat collar. Some are also made with a single twist like a Mobius strip and if you position it so the twist is at the front of your neck it will be warmer.

It does not work with a coat worn open, but if it's that cold, you wouldn't be wearing your coat unbuttoned anyway.

I see your point Diana, unfortunately, the coat I initially bought the scarf for has a lower neckline and a peter pan collar (kind of like the one below) so I can 't seem to do that. And with this particular coat I really do need neck coverage.
Also, the scarf in question has no special strips or any other fastening devices to make it snugger. :/

I have one that is probably only supposed to be a double loop but I make a third loop (not easy to get over my head, though!) and wear it snug around my neck when I need to have that kind of coverage. It's almost like having a fat turtleneck on.

Thanks for the input, Alaskagirl! I don't have the scarf here with me now to try this method, but if I recall correctly from last year, that third loop was very difficult to make if not impossible. I will try that though once again, when I get home.

I was also thinking of experimenting with some kind of clips or bobby pins or something to make it snugger. I'll let you know if I come up with a passable solution

that's why i am not a fan of circle scarves because you can only wear it one way.

Interesting, hadn't thought about the functionality, they look fab though, don't they!

I don't tend to wear them tight around my neck, but they do add warmth by covering my chest area, keeping a breeze from going down the front of my coat and generally adding an extra layer of insulation to my top half. I also love the way they look. I think you need a snood for what you're looking for.

I can relate! I like to wear scarves just for the look in spring, summer and also fall, but I need to stay warm in winter. I'm searching for a perfect big circle scarf too, but I haven't found one yet. Ideally it would work wrapped three times for warmth and two times for the look. I agree that it helps if you have the scarf partways in your coat to push it up for warmth.

Would it help to cut the scarf so that you have a long strip like any regular stole and then wrap it like you want to? You can tassle the ends or maybe ask a crafy friend to do that for you.

If you want warmth, get one of the faux fur scarves. Last year the Rack had them but I've seen them recently at Target.

@Victoria: I wish I knew sooner how unpractical they were! But all I found is how super ware they are and how über cool they look.

@Carole: I love how they look, too! If only they could keep me a little warmer :/

@Traci: that's the thing - I need my neck to be warm, first and foremost- I'm kind of on the freezing side and need all the insulation I can get

@Nidhi: I don't think I can cut it into a stripe - I think the whole thing would start unraveling and I would not know how to prevent this, since I can't sew.

@Joy: Unfortunately, I am not from the States, so no Target around here. But I see your point. I have other scarves that I can wear, and it looks like I will have to do that and forget about the circle one.

I guess it's just trial and error, I have 2, the bulkier one I can only wrap twice and it's a bit looser like yours the second one is a thinner one which I can wrap round 3 times and is perfectly snug, more so than a regular scarf x
