In a moment of weakness, I decided to order these pants that Inge so kindly included in a roundup of wonderful green and cinnamon items for me. It was a very impulsive purchase, but I was curious to try them, they were a good price for the brand, and available in my size.

The good: they are soooo nice. The fabric is lightweight yet doesn’t feel flimsy, they are comfortable and have some stretch. The length is great — I could stand a half inch taken off but I don’t mind that. The slits make them a little bit edgy/sexy, which I like. The color is rich and plays with my neutrals well but i could see pairing it with my blues too. I have several footwear choices that look great with them.

The questionable:

1) Can I justify these for a casual life? I own exactly one other pair of trousers that qualifies as even slightly dressy, but sometimes I want to get away from jeans so much, ya know?

2) My weight is at its peak right now (yes, it has been for a while, but I’m ready to do something about my eating/drinking habits now that summer is over and the celebrations and lazy days are waning). These pants fit perfectly in the waist and rise, but are a smidge snug (not in feel but in appearance) at my hips. Please be real with me — how bad is it? I can happily wear them with longer tops and jackets now, and have more options when I lose my extra fluff (I think even five pounds would make a big difference, based on my past experience), but I want to be realistic. To be clear, they *feel* fine — they are super comfortable. I just wish the fit appeared more skimming on the hips, but this is my perpetual fit problem.

Ordering a size up is not an option —- they are sold out.

Photographed here with just a black shirt and various black jackets for simplicity, plus a few footwear options. How perfect are they with the patterned Hispanita boots? I counted at least six scarves in my wardrobe that tie in this color beautifully with my palette, so even if these pants are not winners, I’m pretty convinced some pants in this color are in my future.

Gorgeous! I think the fit is really personal; to my eye, it looks fine, except in picture 9. But, this is more about me, because I don't like trousers to be that fitted on my body. In all the other pictures, they look fabulous. What's the return period? Do you have time to see if you can lose a few pounds, and then make a decision? I'd even be tempted to wear them for a few hours, to see if they relax.

Keep. Keep. Keep. Did I say Keep? Besides the awesome fit (imagining them shortened a bit as you suggest), that color will be perfect with the black and dark blues that are your core colors. These pants might not be so great on a shorter person but you have the height to balance out that side slit. Your "moment of weakness" was certainly a good idea!

Keep. Absolutely. Wear the longer tops, and if/when your weight slides down a bit, tucking can be your reward.

I love them on you (and those booties!!) But to me they *do* look a bit too tight at the hips and crotch (whiskering and tight around the rear.) This is a very personal pet peeve as this is my own hard-to-fit area being a pear, any I always have to size up. They look good with long tops that cover the hips but I would wait until you are down a size to wear them with shorter tops. Again, this is very personal so feel free to disregard of you feel differently.

These trousers look stunning on you! Keep and wear them regardless of whether you’ll lose those extra pounds. Plus casual doesn’t have to be only jeans. In pic 7 (my favourite) with the sneaks and that jacket they look absolutely at home - elevated casual.

I think that these trousers look good on you ,the silhouette is very flattering and they look good on the derrière,shorten them a smidge and you are good to go.

They are gorgeous. I think the fit is personal. You look amazing in the pants but there is a slight bit of pulling in one of the pictures that Roxanna also noted. This might not bother you.
I doubt anyone would notice. You look absolutely breathtaking in your outfits.

Wow! Those are beautiful/sexy pants and all of the looks are great. They look amazing with black. Love!

As to whether you'll wear them.....only you can answer that. I have a sugar eye for dressy things that don't fit my lifestyle as well. That said, it's always nice to have a couple options when you do want to kick it up a notch.

Fit......I agree with some others that they're a bit snug through the hips. I don't think a trouser should whisker at the front. Waist looks perfect. I'm sure Angie will chime in about fit and length.

Theory wool pants tend to loosen up a bit after half a day - at least, mine do. So I think the fit is fine despite the slight pulling at the moment. A slight hack on the length is all you need.

These are my concerns:

WHEN will you wear them? Be clear on that.

I've had flares with slits like this before. They are fussy. The vents can fall weirdly when you sit, and are too breezy for cold weather. They also flap about when you stride. A problem in bad weather, and when you walk fast like I do. Make sure you are okay with the things that bothered me when I wore the silhouette.

If you can tick off these boxes - I say KEEP and enjoy. Despite our amazing jeans fashion era, pants are a nice change. You wear the style absolutely beautifully.

Love the colour and side slit. Great styling, and how fab are they with those floral boots?! I can see you wearing these as an alternative to jeans - absolutely. I, too, wonder if the fabric will provide some ease with time and body heat?

Wear them to art openings, meeting clients, going out to a movie/show, out with friends, date with DH. Don't wear them at the ranch.

I love, love, love these trousers on you. Amazing shape and colour and very you. Quite extraordinary, actually and what a great addition to your wardrobe. They looks truly fabulous and will look fab with so many of your jackets. The combination with the long black blazer is stunning gorgeous. And I love them also with all the various shoes you have tried them with. These trousers are so easy to dress up or down and the cinnamon colour is beautiful, modern and very versatile.
As for the fit - it is personal. I don't mind them tighter, especially if they are a bit stretchy in the fabric.

I love them, but the fit makes me nervous. I know pants relax somewhat after you've had them on for awhile, but I hate counting on that. I like pants to be fluid, and not at all fitted and tight anywhere but if you don't mind it then it's not a big deal. I just always remember something written by someone whose opinion I valued (so much so that i can't remember her name - haha) about how pants that are the wrong size can ruin a look and look cheap even when they aren't. But holy crap do you need to have more pieces in this colour!

I'm another one who would be cautious with the fit. Definitely wear them around the house a bit to see if they relax, as Angie suspects. I have the same type of curves on my lower half, and for a pair of dress pants, I wouldn't like the puckering (I would be OK with this amount of puckering if they were jeans, though).

My other concern for you is that these appear to be dry clean (I followed the find link). I know that for me, that would be a deal breaker as far as a casual lifestyle goes. I get too afraid that I'll spill something on the garment; I'm always babying it.

Gorgeous on you - I love the long elegant leg and they are just a smidge too tight on top. I would think they would stretch a bit as Angie suggested - how long do you have to return them? Maybe wear them around on a home day and see how you feel (also sitting etc.). I am the queen of keeping things until they fit (a secret vice ) so I will not judge.

Those are drop dad gorgeous on you. but listen to Angie on the annoyance factor and wear them around the house a bit before you decide; the points she raises would probably keep them hanging in my closet, not being worn.

i was going to say what Angie said, back in the day when i was wearing Theory pants to work, they were like jeans in that they loosen up as you wore them, so i'm a little less concerned about the fit....i'm more concerned about the slit...would these be wearable in the true winter? does it matter?

I will have to refer to others regarding fit, but the color is SO great. I really think a pant like this - in this color - should be in your wardrobe. I am nodding along with your hesitation about pants/trousers for a casual lifestyle, but one or two versatile pairs would help give you a break from jeans in the fall and winter. A graphic tee and sneakers with one of your amazing jackets and a pant in this color would look so cool.

I love them on you! I do think they need a slight hack.

My only caveat (based on my own dismal record) is make sure you love them based on your current weight.

I also love them on you! Agree with comments regarding make sure the fit is OK for you, I can't stand anything slightly tight on myself, but if they feel comfortable then keep because they look amazing on you.

Thank you for all the thoughts and feedback — very helpful! I’m on my phone so not able to easily respond to each remark.

I’m going to take advantage of the 45-day return window to think about these, try them on for my husband, and try around the house to check out the practicality factors. I’m pretty confident that in that period of time I will either love them so much I want to wear them or I will rule them out for one of those practical reasons or decide I’m not comfortable with the fit.

I 100% hear you on those practicality factors, Angie and others! I am also a brisk walker, so I need to be sure the wide slit hems work for me, especially on stairs. I’m not as concerned about warmth in deep winter — our winters seem to be getting milder, but even so, I run warmer these days and they’re not the kind of thing I’d wear on a messy day anyway. We don’t have constant rain or slush here in winter. The light weight of these pants doesn’t make them a harsh winter item anyway. If I lived in New England, I’d probably be quicker to reject these, but our climate is more southern.

I don’t anticipate ever being comfortable tucking into these or any high waisted pants — it’s just not a pleasing proportion on me (long legs are all well and good, but emphasizing a squat torso with big boobs is not the way to make me feel fab). But I want to be comfortable with that fit on the hip, whether I’m my current weight or manage to lose a little bit. I appreciate the kind comments, but I’m not fully comfortable at my current size, which is my indicator that it’s time to cultivate more mindful habits again.

Great solution Janet - fwiw, I was going to say that I can notice they are a tad tight, but I'm not sure if I would have noticed had it not been a specific question. If they are comfortable, then that answers that question imo.

I wouldn't see this as casual but certainly gorgeous pants for 'elevated casual' - as mentioned perfect for a dinner out, a party at a friend's, etc. I'd be worried about tripped but I'm a klutz in wide pants - however, it sounds like you've added that to your considerations list, so you're covered!
