Hi, This year I am hoping to come up with a non-traditional Christmas. I would like to go somewhere and on Christmas have a nice dinner and show. I should have started making plans much earlier and did think about it but just could not come up with any ideas. Do any of you have suggestions. I am a senior single and was hoping to find something where I could go with other senior singles. I have no problem with a mixed group, that would be ideal. Just that I would not want to be the only one who is a single senior. I will be traveling alone. Not meaning to sound helpless and hopeless, LOL, but the fact is that a lot of my friends have now passed on, and others I have traveled with are no longer able to travel. I am so fortunate and thankful that I am self sufficient.

I am going to be in touch with AAA travel, probably tomorrow.

Just wondering if some of you have parents who travel at Christmas and if you can give me any ideas or suggestions on places they like and enjoy.

PS I would want to travel in this country (USA). Would love a cruise but don't think that is feasible for me.

Where are you? How far can you / are you willing to go? One year I did the Snow Bird train to Reno... it's a seniors trip. There might be a similar Christmas train trip where you are. I also did a seniors trip to China. Bunked on the train with an octogenarian. Lol. I don't know what that says about me, all the seniors trips I did in my 30s... but anyways, how about a train?

rachylou, You absolutely crack me up. I am in Western North Carolina. I am willing to go almost any distance, but with just over 2 months to go, don't expect I can go real far. First off, I would have to shop for an entire new wardrobe from Nordies, and we know that wouldn't be cheap, pardon my language, I should have said inexpensive. I wasn't sure I knew what octogenarian meant, so looked it up. I take it you knew the person, octogenarian you bunked with? I am one myself but would not want to bunk with a strange one, so I know that would be additional expense, a lot of it. What your trips in your 30's with seniors says about you that you are a kind, caring, and understanding person.

I had not thought about a train trip. That sounds exciting.. Will start tomorrow checking on it. Thanks.

Are you familiar with Road Scholar? My mother, a *nonagenarian*, has taken several trips with them. They rate their trips as to the amount of physical activity. However, I looked a little and didn't see anything over Christmas.

I didn't know the good doctor before the trip... but it was a long trip, lol! I got to know him. He was a friend of the organiser, who was a family friend, so it's true he wasn't a complete stranger in a certain sense. There were two others in the same compartment, I should say... if it sounds strange, the 'co-ed' arrangement. It wasn't a private compartment like that.

But I love trains. My second dream vacation is a ride on the Orient Express

The first place that came to mind is Las Vegas. It's off season and KILLER AMAZING at Xmas and just before New Year. Lots to do and not as busy. Excellent rates.

Like JAileen, I know folks who had a positive road scholar experience. There are a couple of trips still open that would not be very far from you - Christmas in Savannah, Charleston, St. Augustine.

Two places come to minds for Christmas. Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pa and Colonial Williamsburg. I am pretty sure there are AAA packages for both.

If you're in western NC you must have already considered it, but how about The Grove Park Inn in Asheville? Historical and beautiful, plus the spa, plus an amazing Christmas buffet. I spent a Christmas there, loved it.

rachylou, JAlleen, Angie, Marlene, danusia, Peri Thank you for your responses. I have to say that every destination suggested appeals to me. I love travel as much as I do clothes! I had planned to dig into this today, but as it happened I was called for some volunteer work that took up a good part of my day.And some of you may remember how much I enjoy volunteer work. I am now looking forward to tomorrow to start fresh on this new project.

Just wanted to add, if anyone has any knowledge of Phoenix, I would be interested in what you have to say. But all other suggestions are welcome too. Phoenix is no more in the running than any other.

Also wanted to add New Hope, Pa to the list. Fun place all year round very eclectic. Superb restaurants (Marsha Brown), Bucks County Playhouse. Just a stroll over the bridge and you are in Lambertville, NJ - more restaurants and art galleries. About 15 mins from there is Peddlers Village- more restaurants, winery, distillery, and craft beer places, clothing shops, and much more. All these places are decked out for the holidays and there is an inn (hotel) in Peddlers Village (Lahaska, Pa) also a flea market opened yr round in nearby Solebury (Rice's Flea Market( which has been around for over 100 yrs.

another plug for Road Scholar ---I have traveled with them twice (both times over seas) and loved it. my trips have had a nice mix of singles and couples. about 1/2 the singles have been traveling with friends/family (which I did, traveling with my mom). but on both trips everyone was welcoming and friendly.

A friend of mine did Road Scholar alone (no family) in the UK and was in her late 50s/early 60s at the time. The particular trip was rated as strenuous, and she was frustrated that a number of the others hadn't paid attention to the rating and I guess complained and couldn't keep up, but otherwise she had a fabulous time.

Bridgie, you sound like a wonderful person, and if I lived in the US, I would love to meet you and have dinner with you.

My family and I don't celebrate Christmas. This year, early on the so-called Christmas eve, we will attend a Christian meeting at the local Kingdom Hall, just as we do every Sunday. And afterwards, at home, we will have a nice dinner with some friends, including some who, for various reasons, might otherwise feel a little lonesome that evening. We do not follow any Christmas traditions, but we do have a good time and a lot of fun.

I wish you a safe and wonderful journey. And if there is a Kingdom Hall near the place you go to, feel free to visit, and enjoy the warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Thanks to all of you. I am slow responding, but I have gotten such good leads from everybody, I am using most of my spare moments checking on the internet and a few calls to make this trip happen. I am very impressed with Road Scholar. Whether I use it this time or not, I am so glad to learn of it and will make use of it in the future. I will be back in touch to let you know what I come up with. Thanks again. Other suggestions still being accepted!

I love Road Scholar. Thank you for introducing me to the website. I will be planning a trip next year by myself. I want to visit certain cities that my BF has no interest in. I prefer not go by myself.

We go to St. Augustine every year for February and March. Beautiful place. Very friendly people and great Yoga. We have also gone to Asheville and Savannah. I loved Savannah. Amazing place.

Depending on where you live, if you opt to stay in-town, you might find something in your community, via Meetup:

Otherwise, you might talk to a travel agent, let him or her know what you want, and see what they can find for you.

(I really love the Vegas suggestion! Fine dining, shows, gambling if that's your cup of tea, and some of the best people watching)

Thanks to all who have made suggestions. I went to AAA travel, picked up several books, reading them, and reading Road Scholar on line. It is amazing.

LaBelle and Angie, oh yes Vegas is very much my cup of tea. I have never been there during holidays. It is one place where I can go and forget that I have a worry in the world. Funny, with so much to do and see, I loved the "one armed bandits", which are probably now all push button. Somewhat like buying clothes with me I have to have self control playing the slots. LOL

I will post when I make a decision.
