Christmas gift question

I am looking for a small gift for DS's girlfriend (early 20s). They are planning a trip to France in a few months (saving up for plane tickets). What do you think of this travel Christmas ornament from Nordstrom plus a L'Occitane hand cream?

Any other ideas for small, not overly personal gifts (maybe travel-themed) are welcome!

When I was in my early 20s I would have loved the hand creme. Not so sure about ornament unless you know she likes decorating for Christmas. What about some chocolates or something? Is that a French thing?

The hand cream is a GREAT idea - especially in a travel size. How about a scarf and a book on how to tie them? She will fit right in with the locals.

Or a tour guide book/map? Lonely Planet makes some good ones.

I love the ornament! Many, many years ago when my husband and I were first dating my first Christmas gift from his mother was an ornament. It still goes on the tree every year.

That particular ornament works because even if she dosen't have a tree its not so indelibly tied to Christmas. I'd dangle it from my vanity mirror year round.

Ornaments seem fairly personal to me; do you know if she likes them? I would go with a travel book or a French phrase book or similar.

My first thought for a suggestion was

Even less personal, and more travel-relevant: a socket adapter.

Every woman would be glad to have a mother-of-boyfriend as thoughtful as you are!

Amy, I am looking for a travel adaptor for them but I was thinking of giving it to DH. I love the moleskin notebook although I suspect you are right about it being replaced by an app.

I love your gift, but I know that I could not use an ornament when I was that age. I was still moving around, didn't have a tree, and trying not to accumulate stuff. But you know your kids!---I gave my brother and sister-in-law some euro's when he was going to Europe shortly after Christmas. That way they had some unhand when they landed.

l'occitane is the best hand cream and that it is from france is a big plus!
I think that a moleskin would be a great idea, even though a phone is useful for almost everything.
I always take a tiny notebook to write real notes in, or to stick little mementos in, a glue stick and a pretty pen are great for those times when you want to unplug.

When I was about that age, someone gave me a small tube of the L'occitane hand cream and hooked me on it for life. So I think that's a fantastic gift!
For the ornament, I would not have known what to do with it (and honestly still might not) as I'm not much of a christmas decorator. I haven't even ever had a tree of my own, although we are considering getting one this year.

Why not a set of pretty travel cubes that she can use for the trip. I can't travel without these organizers. While the granddaddy is Eagle Creek, e-bags makes ones in all colors and prints--even an animal print--so you can customize the set to her particular taste.

Gaylene, great idea! I gave the Eagle Creek packing folders as part of the pre-Christmas gift exchange to my students last year - we were getting ready to travel to a big conference so I figured that can use some travel accessories.

Yes, Isis and Diane, I was thinking about the shuttling ornaments around etc. - it's probably not a stage in life when one wants to keep collectibles around. DH and I love good Christmas ornaments so we started collecting them in our early 20s, even if all we had to put them on was a "Charlie Brown Christmas tree".
