I have been thinking about the capsule idea. I lead a quiet life and don't need many clothes.

If you were going to buy ONE new pair of pants this season, what would YOU select? I own one pair of skinny white jeans, one pair BF jean and several pair of JCrew's Minnie. I have an older pair of slim (but not designer) jeans. I have a black wool pant that may need updating.

After arriving here in May and seeing all the variety of outfits in WIW, my goal is to focus on new silhouettes.

I would buy something like this.

I was thinking along the same line as Suz..a modern track pant. They can be dressed up or down so are very versatile.

Great question, Quietgirl! I, too, like the suggestions from Suz and Suja for track or patterned pants. Also, would you have any use for leggings or ponte pants? I would like to eventually add all of those--track, patterned, and a black ponte pant to wear under tunic-length tops.

I might go for dark red - waxed skinnies or fine wale cords maybe. A subtle color, but a color.

Thanks Angie! Forgot to mention climate. Last winter was brutal in the Northeast but generally the Atlantic moderates the temps. We have a true winter. Usually Jan/Feb temperatures hover around 32 degrees. So hate to think about that today!

All of the above would be good choices . . . is this for work or just casual wear? For a business wardrobe I'd choose the pattern - and in wool trousers probably. For fun I stick with the deep red choice. I can see them with all the cuddly sweaters and boots and booties. No idea if it's still trending strongly or not honestly.

I would start with your footwear and work backwards. For example if you mostly wear tall boots I would go for a renewed skinny or ponte pant style. If you wear ankle boots you have more options. I find the shoe/pants mixing important to getting my style right.

I am planning to only add one pair of summer pants to my wardrobe and am also trying to decide between flowing ankle length, cigarette style ankle pants, culottes or maybe white jeans. I may cave and go with two!

For me? I desperately want a pair of slouchy wool trousers with tapered hems! Also white wool culottes, but I'm going to call those shorts so that in this hypothetical situation I can get both

What about a pair of bootcut jeans? Or is it too sloppy during winter for you to wear those?

At first, I was actually going to suggest a waxed pant, like Mo. I think they are still trending. The only thing is that those would be skinnies, and it sounds like you already have a lot of skinnies. So that's why I voted for bootcut.

Oh, about the colors...I would go with a neutral color if you get coated skinnies. There are some out now in dark brown, and there is of course black. I think Citizens of Humanity has a burgundy one too.

I guess color is still in. 4 slides in is the color http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/wo.....p_0811augd but overall it is more muted or subtle, as I was suggesting.

You said you have a black wool pant that needs updating. Perhaps a really nice neutral coloured, straight leg wool pant would be a good choice. They would defy trends and give you longevity, can be dressed up or down, they are smart, classic, comfortable and warm. It sounds like you have plenty of casual pants, so one smarter pair might be useful.
