Chilly NYC nights; how to pack for Spring look?

I'm heading to NYC in early April and the temps will be in the low 40's. I live in the tropics but do have some outerwear left from my life up North. Is a black leather cropped jacket too wintry or too warm for 40 degrees? I also have a light tan fitted jacket (too fitted to wear layers underneath) that looks Spring -- I think I would freeze but I could take cabs everywhere. My last choice is a dark green J Crew military jacket with gold buttons that says "Fall" to me. Advice please!

It gets cool and windy at night - leather jacket seems like the thing for NYC. Also, adding a scarf would be easy.

Oh, you sound like you're going to FREEZE! Low 40's is quite cold, and coming from the tropics it's going to feel even colder, right?

I think you need a trench coat, and possibly a hat, gloves and scarf! It's been in the low 50's here in Seattle and we are in hats, boots, gloves and coats still...not winter coats, but still coats nonetheless.

I second the advice for a trench coat. If you can find one with a zip-out liner, that would make it even more versatile for future travels. But it does increase the price.

I'm going to agree with the suggestion for a trench- useful for any traveling. And temps in the 40's is when I need my gloves- as windy as NYC is, it will feel cold. Since it could get warmer in the day, I'd go for layers. And my daughter (currently living in NYC) just pointed out that you can wait 20 minutes trying to get a cab at night. Just wanted to warn you.

So I am actually spending the weekend in NYC and environs right now... Weather is similar to what you are describing. I think layers are essential! I have a trench and scarf plus either a lightweight sweater or blazer underneath. Keep in mind that I am from Boston and run warm though so you may actually want a heavier coat. A leather jacket would probably be ok but make sure you can layer under it! Bring a hat and gloves too.

This is so funny...I am from Canada, and I was in NYC last week, when it was crazy warm. There was only one day when I needed a coat at all, and mostly I was sleeveless! But admittedly, the temperatures were not the same as what you are describing.

For 40s and especially if you are from the tropics, i would highly recommend layers and preferably a trench coat. You wouldn't necessarily need the zip out liner if you also wear toppers beneath your coat. For example, I typically wear a blazer or cardigan plus trench in weather like that. Gloves could be nice to have. A scarf for sure if your necklines are open. Bring some layering camisoles for under tops.
