Children's clothes - patches

On YLF we often discuss the power of clothes and the messages we portray through appearance, taking this into account I hope you don't find my question to trivial.

My eldest daughter is at an age were she is always falling and leaving holes in her clothes, she's a typical toddler and a tomboy to boot. I'm considering buying some fun bright patches to mend her clothes and was considering;

If you saw DD in her patched clothes would you think
1) She looked scruffy
2) The parents could not afford to clothe her
3) None of the above you silly mare

As long as the area around the patch isn't faded or worn looking, I think it's fine. I haven't put any patches on my kids clothes, but they have so many that I just use the few that get holes and play in the sandbox clothes.

Cute idea I remember my Mum was always stitching those patches on my brother's trousers. I'd be inclined to say 3! Anyone who knows kids knows how they go through clothes and you might even start a kiddie fashion trend x

My son who is 6 has now put holes in the knees of 4 of his 6 pair of jeans, and I am so tempted to patch them at this point. He would never go for it though, so I'm stuck with washing his jeans a couple of times a week until the weather warms enough for him to wear the million pair of shorts he has to school. I decided I'm not buying any more jeans until right before school starts again, because I know he'll grow over the Summer and he won't wear them very long at this point.

So, my answer is 3!!!

They sell cute shaped patches at the fabric store. They are especially adorable on little knees or bum,. and you often find kid's clothing made with patches sewn onto them as decoration.

I think patches are fine! Especially on little girls' clothes because I think there are just so many cute options. The dress code at my sons' school dictates that no holes are allowed on clothing, so I sewed a baseball patch onto a tiny hole on the knee of my son's jeans, and they became his favorite jeans! When he outgrew them and I gave them away, the other mother I gave them to oooh'd and awww'd at how cute they were!

People get it, kids are hard on clothes. I think patches look much less scruffy than holes or worn spots.

I think that anyone with kinds know that patches are a solution. I would say 3.

My sister has two boys and they all had patches (now the older one has 11 and doesn't like it anymore).

I for one would have no room to judge anyone for patches or holes in their kids clothes... with 4 boys I gave up long ago trying to keep their clothes in pristine condition and pretty much let them wear whatever they wanted as long as we're not going to a wedding or a funeral (I do have a no holes policy for those 2 events)

so I say, patch away and don't fret a bit about it

I'd think how resourceful and eco friendly (well, I don't use words like eco friendly in my head, but that's the idea)! I love the idea of maintaining what we have instead of buying new, patches are a perfect example.

Number 3 !!!!! and how financially astute the mare is !!!

Check out some of the more high end children's clothes : so many have patches - especially girls' clothing.

Anyone who has been around children understands that they will be out of them in a short time anyway...patch and enjoy what little wear they do get from clothes:)

I think it would be adorable! I wish I could do that with my son. The knees are always a problem.

Number 3 for sure! I have patched jeans myself and it works brilliantly. You could sew/add a matching/coordinating ribbon around the bottom of a t-shirt (or as a bow around neckline) or a matching patch on a little top to "tie" the whole look together if you are really worried. Go for it!

I have a friend who appliques things on the fronts of shirts if her kids stain the shirt too and they look awesome! Turns an other wise horrible shirt into something still able to be seen in public.

Patch away - they can look really good! My kids both have patches on damaged clothes, and i had a patch on jeans myself near the end of my second pregnancy when I couldn't face buying another pair. It's probably best left to kids clothes though!

My daughter went through a phase when she was 7 or 8 where she thought she was a cat and went EVERYWHERE on her hands and knees! Every pair of pants had holes in the knees for about a year. I gave up on patching them. Ringleader that she was, she convinced all her little friends to join in. I'm sure all the other moms hated me!
