Changing metal colors

I just finished writing a little more detailed post and just before I could finish and send, it went away.

I have a little problem, dealing and thinking about it all day. Suddenly, it dawned on me, go to the YLF forum. I have never seen anything posted that at least one and usually several could not deal with.

Here goes. I want to change the silver colored metal on a handbag to a rose gold or at least darken it.

I am looking at a few new bags, and when the time is right I will buy one, but for now I am coming to you for advice.

I'm not sure about hardware on handbags, but I know a family member who used a metallic paint to update the color of cabinet/drawer pulls in the kitchen before selling her home. I'm not sure if this method would work if you're unable to completely take the hardware off the bag, though . . . maybe ask a cobbler?

I had the actual hardware on a vintage Coach bag changed, for a friend. Fans of vintage Coach would probably have me tarred and feathered.

Oh, Becky, Bless your heart. Of course, I did not think about the fact I might have to take the hardware off. Maybe nail polish would work, hmm. Thanks for getting the ball rolling!

Thank you, JAileen, I will read Karen13 post immediately. Don't you worry what anybody thinks about the nice gift for your friend. And they better not tar and feather you. Nobody here would approve of that!

I have read about people doing this with metallic markers. I would have the hardware changed by a cobbler if possible.

I've used nail polish, though eventually it wears off and needs refresh!

I changed a picture frame from pewter color to gold color with a product I got from Amazon called Rub 'n Buff. Worked great for my purpose but I'm not sure how the finish would wear on something that is frequently handled.

There’s always the lazy way of letting the silver tarnish, which will darken it.

Bridgie - I have been pretty successful with the technique tha JAileen posted above, but haven’t tried it on a high wear location. I did do a test run with some coloring some metal studs from bronze to silver, and then spraying them with shoe protective spray (I think it was Meltonian) and rubbing them vigorously and they held up. I have some studded boots I might want to change in the future.

If you use an alcohol-solvent based product, try a test piece and try to remove it with cotton balls/quips and rubbing alcohol. Then you will know whether you can change it later if it doesn’t hold up. One thing about the metallic paint pens is they are easy to touch up.
