Celebs looking more glam as they get older - really?

*Please note the glam is not a word from my vocabulary*

I came across this series of photographs today and thought I would ask for your opinions, have these stars matured like a fine wine? Or is it as simple as clever styling and a much improved haircut? I'm not even going to try and comprehend the plastic surgery or skincare regimes probably involved.

I think a lot of it is that when we look at photos taken 10 or even 5 years ago, the look that was fresh and glamorous then is dated now.

I don't really dig the word "glam" either. When I think of gorgeous older women, I think first of Twiggy. I adore her. No cosmetic surgery ever. And she's still rocking it at 60! There are plenty of fabulous mature women that haven't gone under the knife and STILL glow. Lauren Hutton, Christie Brinkley, Iman and Goldie Hawn are some of my favorites. In this youth-oriented society, shouldn't a modern, fresh and NATURAL look be the goal for all women? Just say no to the botox-mask face. That's not glam at all.

I think most of our looks improve with age actually. I'm such an optimist!

But I also think that looking at pics which are 15 to 20 years old puts these celebrities at a disadvantage. But looking back on Hollywood beauties 50 - 60 years ago works in their favour - remember the recent swimsuit post? Elizabeth Taylor, Debora Kerr?

I think they are all beautiful women. However, I think a lot of it is hair, makeup, how much they work out, ect. Most of the women are much more natural in the pictures of them from the 80s and 90s-- while the more current pictures have straightened or done hair, more plucked browns, more makeup. I also think a lot of the women have slimmed down as they got older, more as a result of being a big star than through the aging process which has given some of the ladies more angular faces and more pronounced bone structure (although I know that the slimming of the face is something that often happens when women move from their twenties into their thirties and forties).

Aside from what's been said already, I think some of the 'improvement' comes from being comfortable in their own skin and knowing what works for them instead of being trying too hard to follow the newest trends, hairstyles and make up.

hmm I look at those photo's and think that its possibly not even an age thing, as much as it is that when those photo's were taken all those years ago, very different things were on trend - now, of course they look "better" because they are sporting more current looks and we may subconsciously be thinking the older photo's are "un-stylish" or whatever purely because they aren't in fashion anymore.

So of course, I could have just said I agree with Katja & Kim & MPJ, but I typed it all then read the responses LOL

Hey Angie, I'm with you. We DO get better as we age. Like I said, Twiggy is still rocking it at 60. And how about designer Betsey Johnson? She's having so much fun it should be illegal!

I'm with Katja and queenie. Not only do the current photos look better to our eyes now because the older photos have really dated hair and makeup looks, but it seems to me that they went out of their way to find particularly unflattering photos of these women when they were younger. I daresay that all of them looked better on their best day at, say, 30 than they do on their best day at, say, 45.

I do think women can look better with age!

But what I clued in on was the hair, and as a naturally curly-girl, I noticed that Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Aniston wore their hair curly or wavy in the younger photos, and have it straightened now. Their hair might not be as curly now as it was when younger, but I'd like to see how a woman in her 40s wears her hair naturally curly! (Because I plan on it!) I was glad to see Meg Ryan still wearing her hair more naturally.

I agree Cricket, the difference in hairstyles stood out for me too. In some ways I think it's a shame that only very 'done' hair is seen as chic or sophisticated, although I can see why.

I definitely see the difference in styles but I don't think that's the major difference. The current pictures are all very styled - either glamor shots or from an awards show or something where they're obviously very "done" and a lot of the before pictures are candids of them in more daily life type clothes. I definitely think that they're all more comfortable in their ow skin and that shows through, too.

Cricket, I work with a gal in her 40s who has gloriously curly shoulder length hair. AND she's a natural redhead (she may use a natural-looking color to cover the grays). Her hair is absolutely fabulous. My own hair is thick and stick straight, resistant to any type of curl, so I might as well love it as is. Why do SO many women with curly hair absolutely hate it and straighten it to the point of risking a completely damaged mane? It's beyond my comprehension.
