Celebrity clothing lines ~ lets hear it!

I have just read the Jessica Simpson sold an astonishing $750 million worth of clothes last year and know several forum members have items from her range. Do celebrity clothing ranges appeal to you? Do you feel differently about LAMB than J' Lo or Jessica Simpson? Do you ignore the label and just buy what you like?

I still have a bottle of unopened Paris Hilton perfume in the bathroom which a family member gave me. I will not wear this perfume even if I love the smell. I used to like Jovovich-Hawk (now defunct) dresses because Milla Jovovich style resonated with me at that time. I guess I'm unable to leave a personal prejudice aside, if I don't like the celeb I will not be a patron of their clothes.

BCBG designs and manufactures Jessica Simpson's line - that's why it sells like hot cakes.

I forget that Gwen Stefani is behind LAMB. I love LAMB as you know. Hmmmmm. I'm not making any sense

I really like LAMB, but I also really like Gwen Stefani (music and style). I know someone who works in the fashion industry in New York. According to rumor Gwen is notorious for bringing in other designers stuff and telling he staff to copy it. Can only wear her flat shoes. Her heels are a little too much even for me.
And even though her life is trainwreck at the moment I have two pairs of leggings from 6126 which is Lindsay Lohan line. I got them on deep discount. Also just read that all major department stores have pulled her line.
Don't own any Jessica Simpson.
I had an invite to meet Nicole Ritchie at the Seattle Nordstrom when she was promoting her Winter Kate line. It's too boho for me. I think I was working or call when the event happened.

I tend to veer away from celebrity lines. They tend to be overpriced for the quality, and many of them have ginormous labels (which I also avoid) that can't be hidden.

I neither avoid nor purchase from a line simply because it's a celebrity line, I really don't care either way. I love most Jessica Simpson shoes, but that's just because their design aesthetic always seems to appeal to me.

I've tried to stay away, but one of Jessica Simpson's handbags simply captivated me. I put it back initially, then tore my hair out trying to find it again. I was amazed at how well it held up, and I was pleasantly surprised with little details like a hook on the inside to clip your key chain to. Wore it here (more of a lemon-y yellow; not as mustard-y as it looks in pics). It really opened me up to celebrity lines.

Also, I LOVE LAMB handbags, but I haven't yet found the perfect one at the perfect price.

I've seen Jessica Simpson bags, shoes and even coats that are tempting, but can't buy them. The name gets in the way.

Julie, they are a BCBG collaboration. Jessica Simpson makes good shoes. Her flats are comfy and I have many clients running around in them!

Knowing that BCBG designs and manufactures Jessica Simpson clothing and shoes might sway me to try some on. I have found myself admiring the shoes on occasion, but never tried them on, just on principle.

I don't buy based on them just being a celebrity line. I buy what appeals to me.
I don't own any Jessica Simpson shoes, but I find myself drooling over them at Macy's.
I do own a few pairs of Carlos Santana shoes and LOVE them.

There are a few celebrities who really rub me the wrong way - eg. Kardashian sisters, Paris Hilton, Snooki - and I would never buy anything with their names on it out of protest. However, I wouldn't avoid items with most celebrity names if they fit me beautifully and I loved them; it's a bit of that Angie-ism "leave no retail stone unturned."

Personally, I find the idea of celebrity clothing lines hokey. My first thought is always the Jacqueline Smith line from K-Mart. I can't seem to get past that. I don't have anything against K-mart, or Jacqueline Smith, but I remember always thinking "who are they trying to kid... it's still K-Mart quality clothing"
I also feel that it continues to feed our ridiculous obsession with celebrity here in America. It's not like the celebrities are actually designing these clothes...
I've never actually tried on any Jessica Simpson shoes, but every time I walk by them at Macy's I envision cheaply made, uncomfortable shoes (which obviously is not the case). So, no... I don't see myself succumbing to purchasing celebrity line clothing anytime in the near future. I"m probably missing out on some great clothes, but I've got that image stuck in my head.

And to put my view on this in perspective... I also cringe at sports stadiums and convention centers being named after corporations... HP Pavillion, Staples Center, PacBell Park....... I have no idea why, but it bugs me.

I love LAMB bags and shoes (although the shoes are too high for every day wear even for me) regardless of the celebrity behind them. I do happen to like Gwen as well, though.
I like Jessica Simpson shoes, but most of the bags are too gaudy for me. Funny story, when she first started dating Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, she allegedly distracted him from the game, leading to one of his worst seasons of all time. My husband jokingly banned me from purchasing anything Jessica Simpson.
I don't really have a strong opinion on her as a person. It's hard to judge someone I only know via the media. From all appearances, she isn't someone I'd gravitate towards personally.
I saw Nicole Ritchie's clothing and jewelry featured in a recent magazine. The clothing was too boho, but the jewelry looked fun.
So I suppose I don't give the celebrity behind the brand any consideration on whether or not I purchase their brand.
I do have a slight girl crush on Ivanka Trump and just noticed she has shoes at Nordstrom. So I will probably try those for kicks. Her jewelry is lovely, but out of my price range.

I'm in the camp of "if the shoe fits, wear it!" I don't follow celebrities, I didn't even know for sure if Jessica Simpson of the shoes/bag, is the same Jessica Simpson as the singer. To me, the product itself, is all about the quality, the price, and its aesthetics and how they appeal to me... and of course, whether I "need" it.. LOL.

I don't care either way - I wouldn't purchase because I like the celeb, or shun if I disliked.

I do think that, to a degree, the styles reflect the image. So if I don't like a particular person, I mostly likely will not be drawn to their look.

Funny how it's almost inevitable that celebs eventually become "designers" in one way or another. It's like another box to check on their life resume. :-/

Great question, Julie! I own two Jessica Simpson items and I bought them despite her name, not because of them. They are so freakin' awesome that it would have been crazy not to buy them (a black trench and a white handbag). Her name was a deterrant for me but style prevailed I do wish her name wasn't embedded on the buttons, though ... I just pray no one gets close enough to read it!

I don't ever consider the celebrity promoting the brand. If it fits, I like it and I can afford it, I go for it.

Jessica Simpson shoes are pretty awesome.

William Rast denim (and they have a lavendar cropped silk blazer on sale right now that I am DIEing for!) - by Justin Timberlake, LAMB handbags by Gwen Stefani, and Elizabeth and James by Mary Kate and Ashley Olson are probably my favorites. I do like the looks of Jessica's shoes - but every single pair that I've tried on has absolutely KILLED my feet - same with Carlos Santana - they just hurt so bad!

Pretty much every time I walk by the shoe dept. at Nordstroms and something catches my eye, it's Jessica Simpson. It annoys me, but not enough to not purchase I have 2 pumps from her line, and I love both of them. Comfortable, well made, decent price. One pair I've had for over 2 years now and it's in excellent condition. I'm a big fan of the "leave no retail stone unturned", but I have found in general that I'm NOT attracted to most celebrity lines. Except those darn Jessica Simpson shoes.

I'm 100% influenced by the name on a tag. Lately I will not purchase an item with a celebrity name on it. Not a handbag, shirt, shoes, I'm pretty strict on this right now. I feel like the brand that is known for the item would be a better choice. For example, I think Cole Haan is great for shoes compared to say a Jessica Simpson line, what does she know about shoes?

On the flipside I'm not a fan of Cole Haan bags at all! I feel if a company does something right (or an actor or performer) they should stick to it instead of trying to branch out just to make a buck. And I know, in at least the celebrity case, it's just their name slapped onto the product but I'm sorry, a bottle of perfume from say Molinard who has been around since 1849 will trump any celebrity labeled perfume for me.

Lisa, what about if someone has multiple talents? I'm not saying that all celebrities do (plenty of them don't), but there are certainly those who are gifted in more than one artistic field. That would be like me as a computer programmer refusing to write any music on the side just because my degree and job is in the tech field, even though I'm also a skilled musician and could make money using both talents if I wanted. I think it's expected that many of these celebrities aren't sitting down and drawing up designs for each and every item in their lines all by themselves without a team of help.
