Remember how hard it was to find colours that you loved back in a certain fashion era?

My earth-tone-loving late Mum lamented the '80s that were full of acidic brights (I thrived!). I lamented the black, grey and beige overdose of the '90s that were subsequently adored by many of my work colleagues in the fashion industry. I wore pastel suits when they wore back suits.

TODAY, we live in a fashion era full of all sorts of colours. Earth, jewel, sour brights, neon, pastels, antique tones, muddy hues, and just about any shade of neutral is covered too. That is brilliant, don't you think?

I love it! As well as the wide assortment of silhouettes and eras to pull from. Yay, diversity!

Yes it is. I remember entire seasons where the colours I liked to wear were just not "in" . That would happen about every 2 or 3 winters, and now that I think about it, it's how I ended up with such a cluttered, non-cohesive wardrobe . I'd convince myself that I really did like purple and teal and then brown and taupe, and then red and black and white, and before I knew it, I had all of it in my closet. I wore specific outfits in every colour range , not pieces worn together that were chosen to fit in to what I wanted to wear. In the past couple of years, that has changed as colour has been less the defining aspect of a season than the silhouette or era.

Yay to variety of colour...and heel height!! Some years it has been so difficult to get low heeled stylish footwear...not any longer!

All of the diversity now-a-days, from colors to styles, really makes fashion fun. You never know what someone will show up wearing, because the options are endless.

I love color, but for now I'll have to enjoy seeing it on other people. I have a closet full of color and nothing goes together so I'm cutting back my color choices to only six. I need to work on getting neutrals in my closet.

I think it's great. I also had a closet that developed much like Lisa's... but being someone who can wear black, I was never totally stuck. We do win in that respect.

However... I have a friend who is an "autumn" (Actually a Type 3 under the Energy Profiling/Dressing your truth system) and she finds it really really difficult to find her colours. Which are basically blackened, "dirty", shades. Right now there is burgundy, some olives, forest green, and the mustard Angie posted about today, but try to find those in the summer...very tough. I certainly hope the colour spectrum will continue to expand and be around all year long. Cuz we don't all look good in the "in" colours!

Yes! I love all the different colors from neutrals to mustard to brights and everything in between!

I love that almost anything goes as far as color is concerned...it would be such a yawner if we all had the same palette in our closet. As much as I love variety, I have found simplifying the colors in my closet really helps me keep my wardrobe from feeling out of control!

I remember trying to find navy suits in the late 90s and couldn't. Everything was black.

I'm really glad that there is such variety available-- I remember those years when absolutely everything came in one color and then you got so sick of it that you didn't want to wear those pieces after fashion had moved on (I had a coral year, a turquoise year, a teal year, etc.). Today my wardrobe is mostly a variety of neutrals, but having the ability to find great pieces in good colors really livens it up.

I wonder if the rise of the internet has facilitated this --- manufacturers can find buyers for a wider range of styles and colors.

Is there a wide assortment of colour ?
Every retail season I see neutrals and 2 or 3 colours of the season, like mustard and aubergine this season, not a wide assortment.
I may not see clearly though, I'm more a detail-oriented person with tunnel vision and usually don't see the whole picture.

On a navel gazing level... I seem to only register a few colours when I go into shops. I 'see' only red and teal and pale blue. Well, and crazy acid brain dissolving yellow, which doesn't count. Seeing peach was a real exercise in force against myself. How can I open my mind to more colours?

OMG !!! I was just thinking this the other day ! So many wonderful colors that I just love : berries, reds, rust, mustard, forest green, blues...oh, just typing this is making me happy. : )

I also love how colors go together : I have learned to love olive with teal, grape, cobalt blue. And so many other combinations. I am loving deep wine with pale pink. Maybe this has been there all along but it took almost SIX years on YLF for me to get it. LOL But I have arrived and I love it.

There doesn't appear to be a wide assortment of colors in the places I shop, and it seems they push a certain color palette each season, which I either like or dislike. That said, things are better than they were in decades past, and I manage to get the colors I want to wear.

I'm finding that this year most places have cognac, burgundy, gold or mustard, and black. But there are a few places that also have lilac, sea green, grey, blue, purple and/or pink. Bright red and blue are sparse, and bright emerald green I have not seen at all. Shoes are not grey this year or dark brown.

I'm all about the jewel tone colors this year and wish it was like that every Fall and Winter

You'll find all the colours in one season these days. They might not be in the items that you're after, or at the retailer that you frequent the most. And some colours trend more heavily than others (like burgundy for Fall 2015). Plus you need to shop online to get the widest assortment which is to Beth Ann's point). But the wide colour assortment across the retail industry is there in full force. And VERY refreshing. It's a first.

Thanks for the assessment Angie. I honestly don't remember how things used to be fashion wise - I was oblivious. I think I picked a good time to wake up!

Used to be, I'd be happy in the years teal was available in the fall. But I agree that online shopping makes things much easier. Plus, JCrew and Boden are my fallbacks for color hunting.

The number of choices today, not just colors, but skirt lengths, jeans styles, top lengths and silhouetts is like a feast. I can remember having nothing to wear but brown hand-me-downs a couple of years after that was THE color, and the long hours of trying to shorten on lengthen dresses and skirts to comply with current fashion.
