Casual woven tunics?

Have you come across any that are washable, cotton and not too boho-looking? I am thinking it would be the best kind of top for me this summer. I haven't had much time for shopping lately - I can only hit one or two stores at a time, and I would appreciate any ideas on where to look. Thank you!

Marianne, Macy's has a lot of tunics on sale right now. I just got this tunic (though it is a knit, not woven, and it runs large.) http://www1.macys.com/catalog/.....sn_results

Here are some others that I was looking at that are similarly styled but cotton wovens. I'm not sure if any of them suit your fancy, though.

Thanks Kari, these are the kind I am thinking of. I always forget about Macy's because it's too overwhelming for me and I only go there there when I am looking for something very specific, like socks or baby clothes. I should really figure out a good strategy for shopping there. Great purchase, by the way - I just saw your thread with the tunic outfit.

Macy's and Nordstrom also overwhelm me in person. I don't really understand the layout of various departments or how to find what I want in a certain section. Shopping online with both stores is easier for me because I can look at a specific style across all departments and narrow down to my price range.

Marianne, I feel the same way about Macy's. My local one is usually a mess too - it looks like a thrift store to me which is why I hardly ever shop there. I'm much more comfortable with the Ann Taylor and BR type of store because it's small & organized and I know where everything is. But of course, the selection is so limited! I guess if you go often you get familiar with the layout and can navigate it better.

Marianne, this is precisely the type of item I have been looking for too. (You and I are kindred woven spirits). Your best bet is to look at woven dresses and treat them as tunics.

So it sounds like a Seattle YLF Macy’s navigation expedition is in order.

Thank you for the links, Inge and Medusa! I admit I haven't made any progress in this area yet, so I am glad this thread got resurrected.

Angie, a YLF expedition sounds awesome. Since being overwhelmed with Macy's seems to be a common topic, would you consider doing a post on it? Your guide to Nordstrom departments was very helpful - this was actually the first YLF post I read. I used to shop at Macy's a lot when I first moved to US, and I see others' purchases that look very nice, but I just don't know how to find things there. And I never even look at their pants. And their brands keep changing, too, so my experience from 10 years ago is useless now.

I regret getting rid of my old mini dresses now... there were a couple that might have worked.

Medusa, the Anthropologie tunic is beautiful! I would jump on it in a heartbeat if the sale price came down far enough. Thanks for the tip.

Angie - I second the suggestion for a Macy's shopping guide! That is the closest nice store I have to me, and it can be overwhelming. I have to add that the Macy's I went to when I lived in Ohio was always a mess, very small, never had any of the great stuff I can find in the store here or online so I didn't take it serisously for awhile. Not all Macy's stores are created equal. But a guide would be great!

The flagship Herald Square Macy's in NYC was also an absolute mess when I had the pleasure of shopping with Angie there.

Here's what she did: Went straight to the dress department. Did not get overwhelmed by a million other departments. Went straight to the day dress area (of course, not labeled, but you can tell which one it is because it's not the formal evening dresses). Went right to the racks and started pulling dresses with the right shape and fabrics.

This only works if you have a specific idea of what you want. That seems to be key in dealing with Macy's. If you wander into that store with only a vague idea, I have the feeling you could be in trouble!

Laura, I can more or less fathom the dress department, except for the fact that dresses can be found in other departments as well. And things like accessories, bags, lingerie - fine. The rest of the apparel is quite confusing to me. I think maybe breakdown by brands/lines would be helpful, e.g. this line is good for certain kind of tops, or certain body type. I don't know if it's feasible and if their merchandise lends itself to this kind of generalization, but I am just trying to throw out ideas.
By the way, a couple of weeks ago I was picking up some baby clothes and I noticed a great-looking denim jacket in the junior dept. I didn't have time to try it and it's not online...

I understand! Macy's still doesn't make it easy. They do put dresses in the Tommy Hilfiger/DKNY area, Inc., and more, and how are you supposed to find everything unless you weed through it all??

Urban Outfitters has some tunics as well - they're a bit less expensive than Anthropologie, but not that much.

Thanks so much, Medusa! I haven't been to UO in ages, but these look very promising. I'll try to make it to the store to check them out.
