Casual Ensemble: My first capsule

I'm no Ingunn, that's for sure! I said I was going to give this another go (after yesterday's unsuccessful attempt) and I did. I'm pretty happy with how it came out but I'm sure it needs some tweaks. I don't have ponte pants and I'm not really a camo girl but I did have some skinnies that I think are a good substitute.

Photos 1-4:The layout photo shows different shoes--but I can't walk in those yet (realized when I was trying to walk to take a picture.) I'm limited to the Fryes for right now--I have Carson's too but they look too western to me when worn with skinnies. I'm hoping to have some more shoe options open up--especially the Report Marks (but I think it's going to be awhile.) Anyway, I'd love your feedback if you have time to take a look. Also omitted is the scarf--I didn't wear them much last year unless for warmth. I felt like they were too fussy. It's not fall here yet so feel free to comment on your likes and dislikes. I have plenty of other things to try!

Photos 5: In lieu of changing the footwear, I added some other topper options. I'm not sure they work but I figured you would tell me if they looked horrible.

Photo 6-7: Today's WIW. Last photo shows sized down SBF jeans stuffed into the Fryes. It's not exactly what I had in mind but I think it works well enough. Do you agree?

Well.....for your first attempt this looks pretty good to me.
A great combination of looks, I love the soft colour scheme and I think I want the topper in 6 and 7

I think you've done a great job! I was hoping some others would do this so I could get some additional inspiration -- so glad you did! I like the autumn color palette you have chosen and I think the Frye's look great. Did you think about what bag you would carry with this? I hear you on the scarf - I rarely wear them either.

You limited yourself to just two tops and five toppers, right? I was going to try using 6 tops and just 2 toppers but I'm not sure if I can get 6 tops that all look good under the same 2 toppers.

Thanks, Tex! That's exactly right. I'm trying to go through the closet and see what works under what. I think my preference is for baggy tops and I can't always get those under my jackets without having to slide my hands up the sleeves of the jacket to pull down the sleeves underneath. It drives me batty. Or, it's knit on an knit lining which doesn't work. Or, it's a bat wing top that doesn't work at all. Poor planning on my part!

I think I need a lighter bottom in the mix--the black and green look kind of the same the more I look at them. It's definitely a start though--I've never actually tried this although I've said a million times I was going to try. That in itself is a coup for me!

ETA: The bag is always a problem. I have a black Fossil crossbody and a red one. I think one of them will work.

Kelly, you may not be Ingunn, but you are your amazing self, and this is a perfect MOTG capsule! You've done a great job. I really love the Fryes, much more than I thought I was going to, actually. I mean, I knew I liked them, but I wasn't sure they'd work easily for you given your dark hair. Now I have changed my mind. With your softened autumn tones here, they blend beautifully. Every one of these outfits is a winner!

Do you have another top to add to the capsule? Or how about one of your fab casual dresses?

I hear you on the scarf thing. I did wear them constantly last year (for warmth and also pattern and colour, since I tend to buy so many solids) but I often ended up feeling fussy with them on. Strange how our tastes change that way; I used to love them!

Thanks, Suz! I was trying to keep it simple so I stuck to two tops. I'm going to see what else I can layer though. My closet is not very well curated, I'm afraid. I realized that I buy for variety because it is too much work to figure out capsules--my quantity is high but my ability to mix is low. My goal next week is to play in my closet a bit--do some purging even perhaps. I got rid of a bunch of orphans recently but I still have some work to do. This was a great exercise. It made me realize that I way too many clothes!

ETA: I cleared out a bunch of dresses but I think I have one that will work. Skirt, too. I really want to work on my straight leg denim capsule--that way I can wear my Frye Carsons too.

I love this - the tonal quality of your capsule is just fab, very sophisticated imo. YLF is special because we all interpret Angie's suggestions in our own ways & as Suz wrote you are your amazing self

Way to encapsulate! I am going to study this for a lovely casual work and MOTG ensemble. I really love your colours, the teal and burgundy and the boots are a star.

Great capsule wardrobe here. I need to try this out for myself. I have ponte pants and camo jeans, but I think my "hole" is going to be tops for those pieces. I'll have to see. The Frye's look great here. How are you liking your BF jeans? Mine are fast become my new favorites.

This capsule is looking pretty darned good Kelly - everything works really well together. And I quite like the BF's stuffed into the Frye's.

You did a brilliant job, Kelly. Well done. You wear your blazers wonderfully and should not be worried about layering under them - as you mentioned in the comments section of my post. I also suggested a sweater coat as a stretchy alternative.

The BF jeans look amazing tucked into the boots. You look and are fab.

Thanks for the nice comments! I’m a novice at this but the process has my brain churning to come up with some new combinations! Of course, it also has me looking at a second foot wear option--a low heeled bootie. Something that I can wear until I can wear my beloved Report Marks.

@Caro: thanks! Thanks for the remarks on the palette. I was thinking it was kind of dull but I’m really drawn to soft colors these days.

@NicoleD: Thanks. I’m really loving the boots. I can’t wait to be able to wear them--probably a month or so before it cools off enough.

@Lisa: Thank you. I think the pants will be easier to pair tops with than you think. Any solid would work well--probably in a rich color like Angie shows in the post. LOVE the BF jeans. I’m embarrassed at how many I currently have. I have regular length for winter, petite length for summer and now sized down petite lengths for tucking into tall boots (less volume everywhere.) I have been wearing them constantly. I can’t remember the last time I wore true skinnies!

@Shannon and Firecracker: Thank you. Glad that the BF’s pass muster. I wasn’t sure if I looked stylish or whether I was going out to milk the cows! Both of you have such a discerning eye--I appreciate your feedback!

@Angie: Thank you! I took heed of your response regarding the knit blazer. Layering works much better under those. I love the sweater coat but haven’t had much luck finding any--I do have the Halogen BF cardigan from several seasons back. I plan on pulling those out again this fall! Thanks for the reminder. Glad the BF jeans look okay--I had imagined they would look sleeker so I was kind of disappointed at first. The look has grown on me though and I think I’m going to channel “suburban farmer” for fall/winter! Thanks again!

Gorgeous boots, Kelly, and a great capsule! The colors are lovely and you use them beautifully. If you can, I think you could extend the capsule with one more bottom and a few more tops!

Kelly, you look amazing! I'm so excited to see your take on the capsule idea. Your toppers and tops all work well to my eye, and I adore the pine green pants in particular. Those boots are gorgeous, too. If you add another topper in a light color, you'd instantly feel that the capsule produces more varied outfits, I think. A simple t-shirt would do.

Just looking at your capsules kind of overwhelm me--I don't know what else to say except that everything is SO fab and so different. I will definitely try another light topper--perhaps a light jacket instead of all the darks too. Oh, so many options! Thanks for chiming in with your expertise!

Ah, perhaps I am catching on to your genius. I must say that I am really amazed at the variety of your looks in the last capsule exercise. I think many of my bottoms are just too similar. I must work on that!
