Care for 40-something skin?

File me under: 45, still oily and acne-prone.

I have worn pressed powder, like, FOREVER, to battle the shine. But I'm starting to feel dull, ugh, particularly in the winter! Anyone have any experience with a good relatively-mattifying light foundation or some other modern thing that I haven't even heard of yet that will even out my color and not make me break out? Is a little glowiness too much to ask for?

Primer. Specifically Smashbox Photofinish. You can wear it under foundation or other layers, but I liked to wear it by itself. Gives skin a velvety (matt) texture.

You might be able to pick up a smaller size at a pharmacy with a beauty counter.

These days I’m into a little shine - which I find more youthful. My skin can be quite dry, and I’m 60+.

Fellow oily skin person here. I started using a BB cream under my powder. I tried some expensive ones, but ended up liking the Maybelline Dream BB Cream Pure, which has a bit of salicylic acid in it.

What about trying a cream blush to add a little bit of shine? My skin tends to dry out in the winter so I moisturize and sometimes use MAC primer under foundation for a less matte look (I wouldn't call it dewy by a long shot.) I use MAC Studio Fix powder applied very lightly...with a beauty blender.

I have both oil and dryness, not even sure how that works haha ... I use a BB cream by Boujois and I find it's really good ... Light, decent coverage, doesn't add weight or oiliness, but keep some moisture in there

My skin is still oily too. Have you tried stopping the powder for a while, to see if your face then slows down? I’m thinking of how hair adjusts to the washing routine you give it, getting oily faster when it’s washed more often. If the same is true of faces, then not zapping the oil immediately might help.

Maybe change the way you apply it and where?

I use a mineral pressed foundation from Glo that I apply very sparingly with a round brush over moisturize and only where I want less shine and more even skin tone.

I recently treated myself to a professional dermaplaning session. I had done this myself at home using those popular Tinkle facial razors, and wasn't sure how much different the salon version would be. Well, it was VERY different. My skin feels so much smoother and the dullness seems improved. I don't have a magical product to offer, but my usual ones go on much nicer now.

I was oily through my 40's also. It did help to keep moisturized, and to switch from harsher cleansing methods to gentler ways. Exfoliating only once a week (if that, in the dryer winter months).

My skin only dried out somewhat after menopause. It is still not extremely dry but leans more toward normal and I still can get shiny. I find that no more pores powder by It Cosmetics is good at toning down shine without mattifying. I have recently tried Lisa Eldridge's new foundation, and, on me, it is fantastic - something between glow and matte. Expensive but what I don't pay for in getting my hair colored I spend on my skin .

Try a BHA exfoliant - god for oily skin (chemical exfoliator - it’s just a cream.) Paula’s choice makes a good one. Their AHA/BHA wipe off treatment is also amazing for dull skin
