I always say more than necessary, just trying to make it come out clear
in spite of all the rambling I do. So, this time, I promise I am going to get to the point and say it quickly.
A week ago today I got a new license plate for my car. I don't like it. I didn't notice it until I brought it home and was putting on my car.
Today, one week later, I don't like it any better, and probably don't dislike it more either, although yesterday I backed the car into my driveway, so it wouldn't be readily visible to people driving, walking on my street. lol
And that is crazy.
Have any of you ever had this problem? If so, may I ask, how did you deal with it?

Oh dear. It’s a horrible combination of letters and numbers? If it’s truly awful, I’d be tempted to spring for a vanity plate.

rachylou, I know what you mean by horrible combo of letters and numbers and have had them. I don't know how I have been so lucky (gullible I guess is the real word) and never, ever have I complained to anybody. But just before I posted here I started to post on facebook, but happened to think of people here on YLF, and how they always have the answer. If it was a horrible combo I would post it here. But this time, that is not the case. And while I choose not to post it here because we are such a diverse group, and some would like it (I think) and some would not.
So with that said , the letters stand for a very controversial subject or cause happening in our country.
Just to say, the letters do not pertain to any political party. If it did either one, I wouldn't like that for me. But anyone else does that is fine with me.
And yes, the idea of a vanity plate has crossed my mind. I wish it was possible to just return it and choose something else as we do in it the fashion world. And maybe that is possible, but I highly doubt it. lol

Definitely contact your Dept. of Motor Vehicles. I'm sure you can get a vanity plate (of course you'll have to pay extra for it) or even ask if you can get a replacement.

Not too bad $30 for a personalized plate and you can do it by mail.

Considering the in-your-face bumper stickers, window decals, paint jobs, flags and banners that people use nowadays, your plate is probably ok. But if you are uncomfortable, that is what counts.

I would check with your DMV and try to get it exchanged on the basis that it is offensive and you just want a regular number. I would insist but if not successful I would then go for the vanity plate.
I hope you can get this resolved soon.

As Joyce said, you should insist on a new plate. There are ways to do this politely.

I agree with Joyce B. In my state the DMV is super sensitive to offensive vanity plates and I think they would probably be receptive to a claim that something offensive got through the normal process by accident.

And just for fun, here are the vanity plates my husband and I got, reflecting the nicknames we gave one another on our honeymoon in Sicily!

I agree with starting by requesting a new plate and if they are balking, explaining the stress it is causing you.

Thank you. So far, the vote is unanimous to ask for a different plate. I will do so very graciously, and if the answer is no I will get a vanity plate.
Barbara Diane and all, read on. First a confession, when I first joined YFL, I hadn't been using a computer very long and hesitaed (in fact did not give my real name or any thing vagulely connected to it) and used our rescue Doxie's name Bridgie. However, my first two names are Barbara Anne, and last two initials are BS So, Babs is at top of list for vanity plate, or Barb, or Barbara. What do all of you think, and do keep in mind my age. Ha

You don't necesarily need to have a vanity plate if you request a change- I wouldn't think. Love the plates MsMary!

Oh, suntiger, I ran two things together there. I am going to request a new plate from what they have to issue. I TRY to think positive all the time, but in this case, I am thinking negatively, and really don't much think they will give me a different one. So, I am thinking ahead, for a change, and have my vanity plate request ready.
And I am beginning to chuckle about this anyway. I have never, ever considered a vanity plate, and here at this later stage in my life I am.
And even putting my name (most likely) on it.

You have some good advice here already but I want to say that it is legitimate to be upset about this and definitely ok to request a new one.

This is starting to sound like it might have been an annoying start that leads to a happy ending that you might not have achieved without having to experience the annoying part.

I've never had a vanity plate but I've enjoyed deciphering them and speculating on the story many, many times.

Glory, thank you for chiming in. Your comment reinforces my thoughts on this. I know if I kept the plate, I would always be irritated that I let it pass. I believe we have to choose our battles!

I, too love deciphering vanity plates, and even 'standard issue' plates.
I am going to post here my old plate which I did not like, but just decided to let it go and use the plate, And maybe no one else sees it as I do or even gives a hoot, lol. I used it for about 3 years. It is/was TPX -xxxx (the numbers Xed out for effects), However, that was was just silly but the one in question now is in the nature of a social issue,

Checking back in to tell you that today two weeks after I received my new license tag, I have a different one, and am very pleased with it.
I was prepared to buy a vanity plate if necessary, although I really didn't want a vanity plate, but had decided I would if necessary to get rid of the not so desirable one.
I did get a different plate (it took two different people to make the decision) but when I suggested that I would like to speak to the county clerk, the first person I had spoken with made a little more effort after firmly telling me it would be $6.00,I replied,that is fine,but she stepped away and asked the woman at the window next to her to assist me, which she did without speaking one word to me, took over, did the proper paperwork, handed me another plate (I looked at it carefully and asked my DDIL her opinion, and she agreed that she thought it was fine. BTW, the second person, did speak at that point and said that will be $3,00. lol. I wrote a check for the $3.00, and I very politely and nice tone of voice thanked her for her kind and professional assistance. True Story.
