Some of the outfits don't look quite *there*. What else can I do to polish them off?

The two outfits that you like least do not have a statement topper. Adding accessories can add a wow factor. Shoes, bags and scarves are a fun way to add polish.

Em, I am not sure about that, as basics can be beautiful pieces in their own right. For me, with a more maximal style, I like adding a statement piece to each look, even my pared back looks will have an item with a touch of whimsy or point of difference. However, when basics are combined well, it is an effortless elegance. I think a number of Fabbers pull off those looks amazingly well.

Yes, I can see why 6 and 7 are less exciting. The two solid tops together have a bit less pizzazz. I would add the red bracelets to the outfit with blue top (6) and something with blue, gold or green to the one with red shirt. Just adding one touch of a complimentary color or tone in a print or sparkle could enliven the entire look. But I bet if the cardigan isn’t buttoned, on your body you would have enough movement that you might not be so unhappy with those combos.

CJH: The cardis are never buttoned. Well, maybe just one or two buttons under the bust. They are for warmth. Frankly, they come off and on multiple times during the day.

You hit the nail on the head why I don't like those outfits. The other way to make them work would be to add a scarf like in Maitai's picture book--such that the scarf actually becomes the main focus. Unfortunately, I have never been able to pull that off.

I am really struggling with finding items--can you believe it? I love the print of the blue and gold blouse for example, but hate the cut--I prefer sleeves and an actual collar that wouldn't feel like I am being strangled.

Bracelets are another problem. In general, I hate the way they move and add physical weight to my arm, and also, I have child-size wrists, so most are just too big. I DO like the leather cuff bracelets that wrap around one's wrist, because they are soft.

Back to the drawing board.

hmmm.....the only real difference is between #5 and #6/7 is the sweater, is it that you aren't into the cardigan? also the lenght of the cardigan looks to be much shorter than the pullover in #5, maybe its the proportions that are off in #6/7 (i'm assumming that you have actually tried these combinations on to judge that they work IRL)

You haven't mentioned earrings or watches - which are most of my jewelry (plus glasses). I'm with you on bracelets, which I own but rarely wear. I feel naked without earrings, and they can add color and movement to an outfit, and I likeep a co tasting watch as another small but cheerful element. That said I would wear each of these outfits with hesitation. Perhaps I would add a dress that could go under the cardigans, or a skirt if you prefer.

Roberta I don't have pierced ears, I wear contact lenses, and, well...my watch broke.

I do have a variety of dresses, but they don't require wardrobe coordination, so I excluded them from this exercise.

I think I found my problem with scarves, though. I am petite, and my 90cm scarves always seemed to overwhelm me. But wouldn't you know: it seems Hermes also makes them in 55cm and 70cm. And other brands, too, of course. I will need to take a trip into the city to try some things on.

I live in a warm climate so I struggle with that third piece that finishes an outfit. Through trial and error, I found a necklace works well for me as a substitute third piece.
