Capes, anyone?

Anyone here bold enough to try a cape? I've been tempted to crochet one that looks fresh and modern and not too voluminous. Maybe in an ombre yarn with purples and indigos? I don't know where I'd wear it - maybe in a Ralph Lauren ad!

I have a knitted one in a plummy colour which I have worn to a wedding but I'd love to wear it more I shall watch this thread with interest for ideas x

Years ago, when I still sewed, I made a light gray cape in a lightweight wool blend fabric. I don't remember whether it had a hood or not, but I wish I still had it.

Hi Louise. Capes make a gal look smashing when worn in the UK with that unpredictable weather! But I work at large college campus in the southern US and although I'm a part-time design student, don't really know how a cape would fit into my current lifestyle. Believe me, though, I AM bold enough to try it. Cheers!

I love the look of capes! Why the heck not, you know :)? I actually have a red wool knit poncho (with a hood!) from years ago that I still occasionally wear, though it sort of reminds me of Little Red Riding Hood, and, as Tim Gunn would say, it's a lot of look. But capes can be so sophisticated and glamorous...

Ladies, I think we should be BOLD and wear our capes and ponchos! Yes, Louise, we should start this trend. Lynne, maybe you can find a replacement cape; gray is such a versatile color. LOL jonesy about Tim Gunn's "a lot of look' comment. He is CLASS personified. I think capes are comfortable, practical and DRAMATIC. I'm sketching out my crocheted design as soon as I get home. Bring on the nippy weather!

I have a poncho, I admit it, a 15 dollar on sale one from U.O. I have only worn it on the ferry (blast of cold when you step out of the car!). But it dwarfs my petite frame, really. So most of the time it is just over my legs in the car (can't have the engine/heat on when the boat is running!).

I do have a cape jacket that I love, the cape part only comes down to the elbows, over the shoulder. It's not very warm because the sleeves are so open, but I love the drama of it. Both of these are in neutrals and I think it can help the look not to be too "little red riding hood", or costumey. Paired with a leather jacket, it can be a nice layering piece too.

It will be fun to see what you make.

Well, what is not to love about that poncho?! It's black, it's practical (with the kangaroo pockets--in leather!--and the hood), it's by Alexander Wang, and it's somewhat reasonably priced! It would go with everything in your closet! (yes, I am an enabler)

Everyone must post their pics of their capes/ponchos when the weather gets colder!

Dang, now I don't know whether to make a poncho or a cape! In the September issue of Elle, there's a lust-worthy poncho, actually its more like a chubby, in some type of luxurious fur. I have attempted to find a picture I can post here! It's Italian and over $15,000 - I looked it up in the "where to buy" pages and was telling my hubby that I simply MUST have it. Just kidding, of course. He had his nose buried in a car magazine and didn't hear me anyway. SIGH. Just as well, I would have to alter my entire lifestyle to have this jacket as the centerpiece of my fashion world. LOL. It is gorgeous, though.

Hilarious! Yes, wearing the cape or poncho can pose some problems when trying to navigate the real world. For example, I find that it's very tricky to buckle my seat belt when sporting my poncho while driving. But such is the price of wearing such a dashing item :).

I love the look but I haven't found anything within my budget which makes my heart swoon or flatters my petite body shape. Maybe I will find something in the post-SYC challenge sales in January.

bj1111, THAT is cute! Maybe I could duplicate it, I'm fairly crafty with crochet. Great idea about shopping the sales, Dawn. I am seeking a lightweight merona wool cape in a charcoal gray. Angie, you're a cheeky lass, which is a good thing. I'm tall (5'8") and adore all things cropped.

FYI: The $15,000 Italian object-of-my-fashion-lust fur chubby is on page 328 of Harper Bazaar's September issue (not Elle as previously falsely reported). It's a Brunello Cucinelli and is so beautiful it's scary. jonesy, I think I can live without it.

I love capes, but like Dawn, I haven't found just the right one that would flatter my proportions, since I'm pretty short. I'm tempted to try to sew one myself or have my mom or grandma make me one. My grandma made me an adorable maternity cape when I was pregnant with my first daughter, and I love it. Maybe she could make me a non-maternity one...
