I do find colour theory interesting but there are so many exceptions that it becomes difficult.

I did look at Youtube videos by Jen Thoden and I liked her methods. But they may or may not speak to you.

I think N that you are neutral too, and suit mid range colours. I agree that most of the bright ones are too harsh.

I now stick to avoiding colours that either I don't like or that definitely don't suit me. So I avoid most purples (don't really like them) and avoid citron, optic white, charcoal and taupes/cool beige near my face as these are my least flattering colours. When I wear clear mint green, cornflower blue or coral I always get compliments so I think these must be my best colours.

This is me outside on an overcast day. Please excuse the scowl, even with my glasses I find it hard to focus on the screen so scowl a lot when I'm straining to see. Not good for wrinkles though! So need to stop that. I already have a deep forehead line. Those are my eyes but they really are chameleons... They can look slight blue, grey or green under different lights and clothes. I think they have a bit of warmth to them too. They definitely aren't clear though, very muted colour.

Also I remember khaki looks okay on me too. I'm thinking maybe that maybe warmer cools and cooler warms look better for me?

Also I found this one, its orange which I always have avoided as I really don't like it but I think it works...is it the same deal as the red kimono? I went to know whyyyy it looks okay when it shouldn't

I think that many of us are idiosyncratic mixes of warm and cool, and don’t always fit neatly into predetermined categories. As such, those categories can be good places to start but then add and subtract from there.

For me, I’m probably mostly some sort of soft summer, and most of that palette rings pretty true to me. But I look terrrrrrible in all sorts of brown (rosy beiges and browns are supposed to be great for summers, but I just nope right out of it all), while I find I am able to wear a much wider selection of greens than “ought” to suit me (light, sour chartreuse? Really? Yes, really!!). At a certain point I’ve prioritized noticing rather than explaining.

Maybe warm reds are for you what greens are for me. That orange in your latest picture looks great on you, as did your wedding kimono (which looks like a warm red on my screen).

Yeah I think i'll just have to check each colour as it comes really I think. The scientist in me wants a set of rules to stick to but I'm probably not going to get it. I do think peachy colours look good on my lips and cheek (better than pinks) so I do have some warmth for sure. I'm probably on the border.

Pastel colours, neons, yellow and pink are on my NO list at the moment but I think maybe I can get away with more than I initially thought.

I think i'm going to try red and see how I go. I've got some great finds.

The kimono was actually quite peachy too.

To me that orange top is just a bit more blue-based (google blood orange). I suck at describing colors but yes I can also sometimes wear orange (and even yellow) too. It needs to have a blue undertone.

Is it my best color? No. I always feel just a bit off in it. It looks fine of course. Call it color adjacent.

Also remember that no colors are ever off limits, it's the total package that makes a difference. Including hair color, makeup, scarves, accessories, toppers.

Years ago I had a safety cone orange top and by popping on a light blue jean jacket it was magical.

Well I think the only thing to be done is have everything on the table (except the colours I dislike because if my tastes) and just eliminate if I look like death haha. I want red to work so i'm going to try. Burgundy for Autumn and winter.

Think my colours will be classic ones:

White, navy, red, black, burgundy and some lighter blue maybe? Like a vintage jeans blue.

Those classic neutrals all mix together really well, except you have to be careful with the red & burgundy. That’s why I like my berry colors. Cherry red and blackberry for burgundy, also a deeper red that’s more like the color a cherry actually is all work very nicely together. But I hear you on needing to pick out the red that works with your coloring—no point having colors that work well together if they don’t work for you.

FashIntern I don't even know if those things I picked out will work with my colouring!! I'm just stabbing in the dark here haha. Maybe i'll forgo burgundy, but my new trainers have a burgundy V on them maybe just that part won't matter. Though to be honest i'd use both the red as an accent colour with the neutrals so i'd never wear them together. Might be fine. Maybe reds for S/S and burgundy for A/W.

I'll let you know how the red goes next month. Bit worried now my hair is darker, it wont work...This month is underwear so next month i'll probably start with a Boden order. Though that will then take 2 weeks to get to me. They are the cheaper ones on my list so I can get more at once. Probably 2 skirts, 2 pants and a couple tops.

I absolutely love the teals on you! I also like the plums. I see these colors as warm versions of cool colors if that makes sense. So to me you are warm-ish - haha. And I like the contrast of those tones. What about trying a plum lipstick?

On my screen, the Wolford top looks borderline raspberry, which would be your red if cool tones end up working the best.

RobinF plum lipsticks work for me but it is dark so night time only, and brownish tinted ones too. Peach too. Brown and gold eye shadows do better for me.

Pink ones don't so much at all.

So I think I definitely need warm make up weather or not i'm cool or warm.

I found this colour analysis description where there are 28 types and I think I could fit into either of these categories as I already know deep and muted colours look better. Light ones don't work.

I'm going to try some khaki green/army green as in the past that colour has looked good on me and I wonder about browns...i've never really owned brown tops. Need to experiment more!

I’d suggest paying around with the sci/art soft autumn palette. There are lots of systems, they often don’t agree, but it seems to me you do well with mid tones, that are slightly warm and have an earthy warmth, not a clear warmth (spring).
To me the cool colours (1.6,1.7,1.8) bring out mauve shadows, particularly above your lip, and also give you a shiny forehead.
The warmer colours (1.2, 1.3) don’t give you the mauve shadows. However, when too strong (like the strong ochre-mustard) they push you out of the picture, the colour is getting all the focus!
The light colours are not terrible, but if they are too light, it seems like the effect is a bit bland. The dark colours often seem to be draining.
This is a pretty accurate match for the palette IRL https://pin.it/4wKuOYr
And here’s a link to a soft autumn board which includes lipsticks, if you can find them! https://pin.it/6ACXwLS It’s a lovely palette- one thing that I love is how clear the greens and blues look relative to the other colours.
The kimono warm red and warm white looks light spring ish to me (sci/art system), and light spring and soft autumn can often ‘cheat’ with some of each other’s colours.
Softs are lucky, they often have lots of flexibility with colour (my husband is a soft autumn, and my mother is a soft summer).
If I had to pick a celebrity look a like for you, I’d suggest someone like Jessica biel or Jeanne tripplehorn

Thank you, Chiara that was really helpful. I raided my son's closet to drape over myself. Whilst some aren't my best I think over all they work, especially the last one.

Don't mind my shiny head, thats because its super dry here and I keep oiling my face. My forehead is the least dry so that comes out a little oily. The rest drinks it in. I probably should put less on my head, but i've got a natural retinol oil for the forehead and it seems to be helping with the pimples under my skin.

Also I just woke up so don't mind that either haha.

Chiara knows what she's talking about!

I do think it might help if you removed your glasses and wrapped your hair in a white towel. Then drape.

Okay i'll have another go haha. Going to look ridic in a white towel haha.

Well, to my eye, these are all balanced with you. What I mean by that is that there are no shadows, mauve bits around the nose/lips, loss of features, it looks like... you! I am not seeing any shine in these pics.
I have found that knowing my best colour area has helped me be much less critical of how I look- something’s are just down to colour eg I also do the mauve shadow thing, develop a dark ‘beard’ shadow if I wear anything too dark next to my face, and my hair goes very flat and ashy. Nothing ‘wrong’ with me, it’s just how my complexion interacts with colour.
Oh, and last bit of info I learnt recently- if you are ‘neutral’ ie not “true” spring/autumn/winter/summer, it’s quite normal to have a mix of cool and warm in your colouring. So my skin tone is neutral, my hair skews warm, my lips skew cool, and I have a cooler blue-grey iris in one eye, and a warmer grey-green in the other eye. This has been a game changer, when I realised I needed lipsticks that skew cooler within my colours, if I want them to just blend with my colouring. The usual recs for my colouring are lovely, but they were noticeable, and I wanted something a bit more conservative for work.

Here we go with white towel

Chiara, I was reading that with the softs they are often neutral skin and can have elements of the other undertone in them, for example a soft summer can have some warm in the hair or a soft autumn can have coolness in the eyes. My eyes are really hard to photograph or even see myself really. They are a grey-green-blue with some yellowy brown in there I think. Definitely not a very clear colour.

Next time I buy glasses frames would I be better with brown ones?

I always thought silver looked better than gold on me, but now i'm wondering.

Compare 8 and 7; these are good because ambient light level is similar. the bright white is giving you some mauve shadows around the eyes and nose and the skin tone is a bit uneven ( because bright white, like black, is a cool colour). With the greyer white, this is diminished.
I do love the rich reds on you- think red or burgundy velvet curtains, faded by years of sun. With my palette, I find all colours are reasonable, but some colours are just so good, it’s hard not to keep buying tops in those colours (but then I get a bit bored...)
Ok, now just have fun with it, and see if it works for you!

Lovely eye colour! How about a brushed bronze, or tortoise shell? Or deeper brushed gold or red-gold, just nothing too bright and shiny. Remember it needs to work with sun-faded rich red and burgundy...

What should I do about my navy? Its my favourite colour haha. What would make it look better? In the palate I do see a dark blue.

I found a picture in a plum lipstick, or maybe it was a lip balm but it had a brown-ish tint anyway. Plus my tortoise shell glasses (those were my favourites but the kids broke them )

I'll need to look up soft Autumn blush colours too.

I actually don't have much jewellery right now either, the silver on in that picture broke so I would like to buy some more. Would gold be better? Its more on trend right now anyway...

I spent years thinking I was Cool, & wearing the wrong colors. I looked pale & washed out, but never considered the fact that I might not be Cool.

After studying all of the different color theories & receiving 3 online analyses from professionals who all said I’m Warm, I started experimenting with the various Warm color palettes—Soft Autumn, Warm Autumn & True Autumn. I didn’t try Deep Autumn because I know I’m not Deep.

I discovered that I’m actually a True Autumn. The color palette that suits me Best us from Unique to You Colour (in Canada). All of the Warm makeup colors I use work, & I no longer look pale & washed out.

So it was years & years of wrong thinking, & I feel rather stupid, to be honest.

@N: I have not given up black or navy, even though I don’t have the Autumn version of navy in my closet, simply because I like these colors. I make sure not to wear these colors anywhere near my face & to wear gold jewelry. My absolute best color is olive green, so I have purchased several things in this beautiful color.

@suzieq that was my experience too. For years, everyone said ‘oh you have cool colouring’ and I just thought I had very drab hair and a lot of blue shadows. Then I was assessed as a spring, what a revelation!
@N Well we all have to work with what we can find, and what works with our lifestyle too. I’m a light spring, but I don’t just wear those colours. For one thing, I look my best in dramatic, structured clothes, and finding those in light spring colours is....tricky. So I still have navy as a neutral in my wardrobe, but only for pants and skirts, and I’ll also wear bright white, although creamy vanilla white is much better, colour-wise. Black, however, is not in my wardrobe, it is just too far from my best spot, colour-wise.
I’ve also found that I have more flexibility with some colours than others. So green, I can go from darker olive to light spring yellow green, to cooler greens. I can also wear a lot of different yellows, but blue is tricky, and grey can be very very bad...
I like the glasses, they are very neutral on you, but I think it will be fun to play with metallics and see how they work. My husband (soft autumn) had brushed rose gold glasses frame, in a very masculine style, they looked very good with his eye colour.

Thanks for humoring me by taking off the glasses and wrapping your hair in a white towel!

In my opinion, this is what I'm seeing:

1. White vs off white (pic 7 vs 8): the white is more flattering. It's a *very* subtle difference, but the white seems to bring out a fresh pinkness to your face, whereas the off-white is reflecting a sallow yellow on to your face but not quite to your forehead as the white towel is reflecting on to that which is why your forehead still looks pink. To me this is the very obvious "tell" that you are cool, not warm toned!

2. Now look at Pic 4 and pic 9 -- both are true warm colors. Can you see how these are also making your face look more sallow? In 4 your jaw looks yellow. In 9 the color is casting dark shadows.

3. My least favorite color is probably 11. To my eye, it's dominating and you are disappearing. There's also something jarring about the contrast between the top and your neck color.

None of these colors are what I'd call soft summer, so I'd love to see you in actual soft summer colors for comparison.

Overall: I vote that you are cool toned! You may be finding warm toned make-up is working simply because it's working with the warm-toned clothing you are wearing. I had that issue back in the 90s, when fashions were all skewing warm. I found I had to wear warm makeup to work with those fashions--- but it still was not my best. In particular I recall having a favorite top the same color as 5. I'd have to wear warm-toned lipstick to pull it off.

Your lips are very definitely pink, and cool toned. I love the plum lipstick on you, it's "your" nude!!

That's not to say you can't wear any of these colors, again it's about balance. Try popping a light blue jean jacket over all these tops, and I bet some magic will happen.

I haven't checked the other replies yet (sorry), but have you looked into olive skintones? Specifically that they aren't just either warm or cool toned? Audrey Coyne has a video to help explain it:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uEYWhFYTEcE

PS I went back through the comments where you mentioned wanting to find a good red lipstick for your skintone, which reminded me of this 'trial & error' colour test using Mac lipsticks (I've found it useful because MAC is usually easily available internationally (I think in Japan too?) so going in & trying the colours according to these tonal/ temperature directions should be easily doable in a department store etc):
