I was using concept wardrobe and I couldn't quite decide between soft summer and soft Autumn. The thing that did it for me was I look better in silver jewellery but I think but I can wear both. Yet my hair is definitely golden toned. My eyes stay grey when I hold grey clothing to my face...I do think that light mauvey pink looked good on me but I wonder if it still would with my hair colour now (again top is long gone, got stretched out in pregnancy so can't check). My glasses are black and if I put navy on my face it doesn't look good. Brown is okay on my face too. Let me see if I can find a picture where I have brown glasses. The silver part on the bridge of my glasses looks good. My mum even complimented my last choice even though it was a similar shape to the pair before.

Overall, I really just want to be able to wear black, white, navy and a red or burgundy. I'd also love to be able to wear some beige too but trying on that trench coat made me realise that it didn't look good. Cream doesn't look good near my face either. To me at least.

Me in brown glasses (but different shape). Also I found myself in a peachy pink (which I don't think suits) and a cobalt blue which is okay but too bright for me. I think I look my best in the navy and white stripes clothes but that might just be my style preferences too.

If silver jewelry looks better than gold and cream looks worse than optic white, then you are cool. Pinterest has makeup palettes as well that should work, if you want to double check. I think lipstick is really hard to use for a tester, but comparing a pink tone and an apricot tone blush should confirm.

To me, the color analysis isn’t to dictate what you should wear, but gives you insight on how to make things work. For example, navy was everywhere at retail and it’s not my color, but I found a post on combining it with my colors and that was really helpful.

I like the cobalt on you better than the navy, but your opinion matters, not mine.

Cat2 thats the problem...the cool colour make up doesn't look good...

My lipstick in my wedding photos is more peachy (I think)...

I was thinking about getting analysed by this person who has 28 categories as I don't think I fit neatly into one of the 12 categories in the more traditional analyses.

FashIntern, it might be that I just don't like such bright colours personally, not that they don't look good. My mum bought it for herself and was way too small so she gave it to me, so I just wore it.

Such pretty makeup for your wedding! I decided after trying two drugstore cream blushes in the same brand, one clearly pink and one clearly apricot. The apricot one blended so much better, so I went with warm, and tossed the pink. I have a hard time with lipstick, it never looks the way I expect it to look from the spot on the tube. So I would be hesitate to reverse engineer one from a picture.

Yeah I doubt i'll ever find something that looked like that. I think it was a blend of a Chanel red and a d&g like peachy pink but I wouldn't know what they were now, I think probably been discontinued. I think the d&g was a bit goldeny too. I suppose it might be best just not to think about colours and take each piece and see if it works though it would be helpful if I could immediately discount certain shades like the trench coat one and perhaps cream because I'm buying all online. Its so hard to colour match that way as things look different on screen than in the photos.

Yeah, it’s hard to assess color on a phone, and some of the color names really don’t help! Glacier?

Wow the cobalt top really makes your eyes pop!!

Whereas peachy pink top pic 1 is doing what such colors do on me too---- I am not a fan. The long discarded top was different, it was more dusky.

I think the frame color is more about your hair color than your skin tone. I also cannot do black frames as it's just too harsh. Blue frames? I have too much blue undertone so it's just too much, if that makes sense?

Like you yes I can wear either gold or silver but silver I think is more flattering. I'm tolerating the gold since it's been on trend for awhile now, it looks fine, but silver is better. My wedding rings are silver.

These were three perfectly good photos you've picked -- #1 is warm, #2 is neutral, #3 is cool. To my eye you look best in #3.

If it helps when I had my colors done, way back in my 20s (yikes), they wrapped my hair in a white towel. So maybe try that then take more photos in various tops or scarves.

One more thing-- your lip color. Whether warm or cool it is deep and higher contrast than your skin. When I was younger my lips were similar. They've gotten fainter with age. But upshot is that I could never do light colors at all. And the undertone (for me, definitely blue) meant that trying a green or yellow undertone on my lips just did not work whatsover. Which explains my frustration with nudes.

So I tried some cloth and some things from my Hubby's wardrobe. The first two are mine though. I just had a shower so hair is still drying.

I'm not at all sure if anything is clearer...Other than pale colours don't suit me at all. Neither do very bright...I think I need something in the middle. I think my husband's blue polo shirt looks okay though but prefer my own tops. I think hair colour does seem to affect, and I think I need cool colours but still have a hint of warmth maybe? Like NOT the very icy cool colours.

Yes murky colors are better-- 1, 2, 3.

But you do look great in 4. I keep going back between 3 and 4. 3 picks up your lip color. Something about 4 is super flattering-- and still makes me wonder if you aren't a spring.

I don't think you're warm at all-- the yellow in 6 doesn't work. 9 is better but that's because it's murky.

You can pull off brights but they aren't your best. The 12 is not the same as the cobalt in your previous picture. It's brighter, clearer.

The good thing about murky colours is they still look good when they go a bit grey from the wash

LOL! Too true!

I just googled and I think your #4 gorgeous green may indeed be a soft summer murky color!

I should also add I flunked that online test where you sort colors -- I am really bad with colors. There are many on this forum much more adept. I am just looking at what makes your skin look most alive, and that's 1-4 and I really love 4.

I was trying to think who you looked like and it occurred to me! Compare pic 3 with Molly Ringwald here --

The same lips!!

Have you ever dyed your hair red?

Oh I can sort of see that actually! Haha. I have dyed my hair red in the past, along with platinum blonde...let me see if I can find the pictures haha. I won't be doing anything to my hair in the future though. Glad I got to experiment whilst I was young. Means I don't have to do it now. Both are in dark settings and probably not very good quality as back then we only really took photos when we went out. Nowadays I take photos of everything but I suppose that's because of the kids.

The red is very Queen's Gambit too!

I vote you are a neutral so you can pull of all sorts of hair colors! My oldest daughter is similar. Her natural color is what I've always called "Jennifer Anniston" blonde. But she loves experimenting with her hair, and has pulled off every color from platinum to black and also all the rainbow colors too. You are lucky!

But yeah, any shade of red is amazing on her, as it is on you!

Oh really, I don't think the red suits me. The platinum was okay but it ruined my hair completely and was such hard upkeep. So yeah neither of those in my future. I'm quite happy being au naturel for now. One of the things that drew me to a classic "French style" was basically natural is the aim. Less fuss. Not to say that they don't look after themselves but its always to enhance their natural beauty rather than cover it which is also my goal. I can't be doing with heavy foundations and like billion step eye make up looks and contouring and all the hair styling too. I'm just figuring what works for me skincare wise too as i've never really bothered as my skin was always sensitive to everything. I just used to splash my face with water. Anyway, the aircons this winter really dried my face out so much that it hurt so needed something. Just kind of streamlining my routine and discovering the right products too.

Some of my aims for the future are:
-To find a red lipstick that suits me after we are are allowed to go about without masks.
-Find my skincare HGs and stick to a routine.
-Get well fitting basics (bras, camisoles hosiery etc and to get matching underpants and always wear as a set)
-Get some jewellery that is good quality (not just fashionable costume type) and looks good on me.
-Get some classic basic accessories like a scarf, black handbag and loafers.
-start my essentials wardrobe and get stuff I feel really really suits me and am 100% happy with, feel confident in.

Not much to achieve is there? haha

P.S I enjoyed Queens Gambit so much!

Your natural color has a lot of red in it, it's a deep auburn. So I do think the red suits you very much! Your photos earlier in this thread with golden blonde were what I'd call Jennifer Anniston blonde-- blonde but with lots of red undertones.

Do you need red lipstick? Your natural lip color is gorgeous as is. Maybe just some gloss?

I found this dress in a similar colour to my wedding dress but I wonder if it is the same and if it would suit me...the dress is very expensive so I'll probably just keep and eye and see if it goes in the sale, then I might be tempted to try it on.

Also yes, I always wanted to be a cooler blonde but my hairdresser who is an older lady and knows her stuff, insisted it had to be golden blonde highlights.

Ooooh, I like that dress! Stunning on its own, and if you wanted to add toppers/accessories, you could go so many directions.

Lol about murky colors. They aren’t really my thing, but given some of my laundry adventures, maybe they should be.

“enhance their natural beauty rather than cover it” is a great goal. That’s what I was trying to say in that bikini post.

Was this your first winter in Japan? Somehow I thought your kids were born there.

N, I can relate to the confusion about colors! I have no clue about which colors best suit you, but to my eye, the slightly warm to slightly cool, medium, toned colors look better than anything tinted or too bright or deep. The red that looks so nice on you looks warm on my screen.

I have been color typed 5 times. One was by my mother, so maybe it doesn’t count, the rest were professional. Here are the results: 1. Spring 2. Contrasting lustrous summer 3. Autumn 4. Soft Autumn 5 Light Summer. LOL! Number 2 and Number 5 are pretty much the same thing and probably the most accurate.

My best color typing was done by a mineral makeup company. This has count as color typing number 6. It was highly customized and not seasonal. Basically I swatched multiple mineral colors directly onto my skin and then compared them back to the original colors. The colors that stayed true (did not change, get darker, warmer, cooler, or fade) were the best matches. When I did that, there was a revelation. Most of the colors fell into that light summer category, but some were in what would be the light spring category and some were in the autumn category as well. Some people span more than one season, and apparently I’m one of them. I have light olive skin, so it’s cool to neutral, but people often mistake it as looking warm. My eyes are grey, but they turn green, aqua, or light teal or grey blue depending on what I wear. My rule of thumb is to pick items and makeup that make my eyes sparkle.

I wear a custom blend foundation because I couldn’t find a good match after many years of trying.....it took a couple mixes to find the right match for my concealer since I have both red and purple under my eyes, but the foundation was on the nose the first time. Lip colors were always tough for me until I did my custom palette. I have dark pigments in my lips, and most lip colors seem okay at first, but within an hour, they turn dark, or bright or just wrong,....so once again, I went custom. It may cost a bit more, but it’s worth every penny. (I wasted a lot of money on makeup mistakes!)

FashIntern, no not my first winter but it was the first winter in our new house with brand new powerful aircons plus I think we have stuff in our walls that absorbs moisture too for during the summer so things don't get mouldy. Anyway it was particularly harsh on my face this year. As for the dress, i'm having second thought s because those cut outs look like they go so far down you can't wear a bra without it showing, though I suppose if I wore a high neck top underneath then you'd see that colour showing through instead of the bra...

Staysfit I can imagine the same happening to me if I tried to get colour analysed. I'm not even sure its a big thing over here since most people wear very muted colours all the time. I realised when I walked into h&m on my trying on adventure (not to buy anything just to see shapes) but there was nothing bright at all, everything was extremely boring. Fine for me but it wasn't like a h&m in the UK.

Anyway I want to add red to my palate but don't know how to go about finding one that would look good on me. Like the kinono does but maybe that's because I was blonder? Also how on earth do you colour match things?! Or do you just buy "red" and hope it matches everything else you have in the same colour? I go for navy and it all matches mostly so never have a problem with that so far, I imagine white and black won't be a problem either but i'm completely stumped with red

I do makeup in a very light tone. Because my husband doesn't like dark make-up. I used cosmetic boxes or cosmetic bags in my handbag. Maybe It will be needed anywhere.

@N, some of what is throwing you off is I think your hair has dye in it. The color of your hair will, of course, affect what colors look best on you.

Circling back, does the Soft Summer palette now look like what you have found most flattering?

Em My current hair doesn't all all. Its all been cut out by now. I did have golden highlights in some of the pictures. My hair right now is 100% my own colour. Been 6 and a half years since i've had any highlights.

Cat2 i'm not sure as I feel myself that I look better in darker hues and soft summer has a lot of lighter ones. I also wonder if i'm that muted...because the lighting definitely affects my colour. If I'm in front of a florescent light then I look very bright and cool, if i'm in the sun then I look very golden and more muted. I saw that taking a picture outside on an overcast day is the best thing to do, so i'm going to try that. Then take another look. I'm also very confused by the cobalt blue people thought looked good on me and that red of my wedding kimono. Normally I go for dark colours and I think the ones I had been sticking to are classic and the burgundy and teal are more universal colours, in that they are neutral (but probably too dark for spring. I think I look washed out in pale light colours).

I'm probably better asking a professional, though I wonder how accurate it is over email.

N, from looking at your photos, I would venture to say that you can definitely pull off some color, but only a medium or medium low (muted) value contrast. A completely monochromatic outfit is probably going to make you look a bit dull. A neutral plus a color (or two) would look best but not lots of color.
