Can I wash silk?

I bought a new silk cami and didn't realize it was dry clean only (actually didn't realize it was silk either...). So is this a hard and fast rule or are they ways I can wash it at home?

yes...hand wash in a sinkful of woolite suds. roll in a towel to remove excess water. drip dry. i wash my scarves this way.

i did this with a beaded top. it came out looking better after the wash.

I have a silk blouse that I hand wash without any problems...it is a bear to iron though. I'd suggest ironing before it is completely dry if you want it crisper than it is looking after you wash

I've had good luck washing many "dry clean only" items. I have used both Woolite and a tiny amount of liquid detergent. I think it is key to use cool/cold water to keep the color from possibly running.

I was all of my silk tops, though I probably wouldn't hand wash any silk satin. I would wash in cold then hang to dry.

being that it is a small item..cami.. you could probably safely do so...although I don't like to venture into the hand wash area...ruined too many items.:(

I shrunk a Halogen top by handwashing it but I have silk camis that I wash all the time with no problem.

I wash my silk items all the time in the sink. I use only a teeny bit of detergent and cold water (you want it to be only barely sudsy because you want it to rinse out quickly and without any agitation). Most importantly, do NOT wring it dry. Roll it in a towel or just let it drip dry on its own.
