Can I upgrade this for dinner tonight? NEW PIC

ETA I've changed into #3. What do you think? Leaving in 15 mins but there's always time to change...

I'm wearing #1 today. I'm going out to drinks then dinner (connected with DH's work) straight after his work finishes tonight. I will know most of the people (work colleagues) but not all, and need to make a good impression. I didn't know until this morning exactly what the do was.

Can I do something with this outfit to make it suitable? Was thinking initially the black jacket in #2 + black pumps and fun hose. Would remove teal cardi and ?scarf. Or should I start again with a black sheath dress outfit? It's 2.15pm in the UK and I'm out at 6.30pm.

I would say start again with a black sheath dress! I don't like that skirt paired with this black jacket, but it would look good with a black dress and keep on this scarf for a pop of color!

I agree with Renata-- or, keep the outfit the way it is. I think #1 looks very nice, and it might be better for drinks than #2-- no need to change!

(Though I have to admit-- that furry accessory in #2 is pretty great!)

I love outfit #1; great colors on you. If you want something dressier, I agree with trying the black sheath.

Not crazy about the black jacket with the skirt... Maybe the shift dress with the cardigan? Can you make the dress work with the boots? There is something very sexy about paring a dress and boots. The scarf is lovely as well, possibly in a loose drape around your neck? It depends entirely on the tone of the function - if its more formal go with the dress and jacket, but it's up to you - what would make you feel good? Best of luck and enjoy!

Agreeing with the others...Your first outfit is lovely! If you need something dressier, use the black sheath and jacket from #2 and fun hose. The jacket and skirt don't seem to play well together in #2. I suspect it's the width of the skirt paired with the boxiness of the jacket. The jacket may need a more fitted bottom.

Lots of ideas, thank you - I'm at work for an hour or so and then I'll make a final decision. You're all right about the jacket with the skirt. Thank you Joy for articulating the problem - it is the bottom part that needs to be more fitted. I have been running into problems with styling this jacket and I think you've put your finger on the reason why.

I tried to go with what I was wearing, but it wasn't working. I've realised that I always seem to wear my black sheath with this group of people, so I've tried to stick with the blue skirt. I've added black lacey top, black fun hose, black pumps and H&M red jacket, green and black bracelet and red clutch. Now I'm worried I'll be over the top. Men will be wearing jacket and tie. To be honest, though, I've never been overdressed at anything I've been to here - we moved a few years ago from a very casual area where it was much easier to over dress.

I really like the sound of your outfit, Polly. Red is so flattering on you. And that blue skirt looks incredible on you, I love it!! I wouldn't worry too much, if the men are in jackets and ties, then you'll fit in beautifully.

(I'm on team dressy anyway: I think it's nice to see that people have made an effort, and I'd rather be a bit overdressed than underdressed...)

I didn't have time to check for any comments in the end as I had to leave earlier than expected soI tweaked #3 (I needed a slightly warmer top). Men were in lounge suits mostly, or jacket and tie. I was definitely on the dressier side amongst the women but in no way out of place.
