Can I get away with machine washing?

Hi all,

Hoping for some wisdom. I have a new skirt- it is 50% polyester, 38% cotton and 12% metallic with a 100% acetate lining.

The washing instructions say Dry Clean.....do you think I can get away with machine washing it or not?

If not, how often do you dry clean items that need it?

I would not attempt cleaning a lined garment at home because you run the risk of the outer fabric and lining fabric shrinking differently and not matching up afterwards.

Ooooh - I really have no clue in answer to your questions - but, I know I wouldn't machine wash something that is lined and says 'Dry Clean Only!'

how dirty is the skirt. you could get those dry-el sheets/packs that you toss in the dryer with dry cleanables. especially if you have a stack to go to the cleaners.

ohhh I've never heard of those dry-el things....I wonder if we have them here in Australia?

I wouldn't wash the skirt either, especially machine wash it. Do you have Target or Walmart? If so, look for a Dryell kit in the laundry detergent aisle. They freshen things and have a special spot remover for treating spots.

I would wash on cold water and hang to dry. I can't imagine that would be a problem.

I have laundered quite a few garments with lining with no problem. I find the main problem is ironing. I would also wash by hand in cold water and mild detergent - I usually use shampoo.

I usually do not hand wash anything with a lining. Also the metallic content is kind of throwing me. Would it rust?
