Can a short fat woman wear this?

I'm drawn to this outfit for some reason. But I've always thought that culottes are not meant for the short & wide, because it makes us look, well, shorter and wider. Plus, the dark over light seems it might make this even worse visually if you don't have height. It looks so cute in the photo though.

Thoughts?

This outfit is really attractive...My rules for my apple shape (5'6", size 1x/2x) is only one visual distraction at a time. So, in this case I would wear the top with a fitted bottom that goes to my ankles (and doesn't chop me off like the bottom shown here) OR I would wear the bottom with a tucked in waist length shirt - preferably with a lower color contrast (maybe both pieces in the same color family - darker blue on top, muted blue on the bottom)

Just my thoughts on dressing my 58 year old self

Thanks! I was thinking maybe just the get the top as that is what seemed to draw me in. Culottes are really difficult.

That is a very pretty look I can see why you are attracted to it.l think that you absolutely could wear culottes ,it’s just a case of finding the right ones for you.

Consider the outfit as inspiration rather than something you need to copy directly. I think you could tweak the outfit to something similar but more in your comfort zone. For example, if it’s the colourblocking and culottes that appeal, dark culottes with light coloured top would probably be an easier starting point. Or try a floatier long dark asymmetrical top over slimmer white pants with metallic shoe. Etc.

I think so, although of course, the exact pieces would have to be proportionally shorter. That particular top would be a midi dress on anyone short. I think the thing about this outfit, is that it has a lot of structure - in the way that Angie uses the term: You see shoulder and leg, which is elongating.

I think so, but you would want the bottoms to go straight down and be the perfect length, and the top should probably reveal the hip on the high side to lengthen the leg.

I think if everything fits exactly like the picture, so that the length of each piece hits the exact corresponding body location, and if there is no bunching or extra fabric flaring out, I think it can work on an apple type figure.

As far as dark over light, I think it depends on body proportions and personal coloring so it’s hard to generalize. However generally speaking, I think for an IT that it would be great. For someone very pear shaped, this outfit might make the hips seem wider than they are in reality. I think that in that case it would probably be better if top was either longer or shorter than pictured so the emphasis was towards the knee or waist.

Good advice! I think I could pull off the top, as I seem to be almost longer on the top than bottom half (really short stubby legs) but I have a fairly decent shoulder and collarbone area. But pants seem tricky with this, maybe just a slim dark denim? I do have white jeans, which might also work, but I'd have to see if it made me too bottom heavy.

I'll have to consider. I like it it a lot, but was struggling about how to wear. Culottes like this always look so appealing and comfy, but they're not a good look on me. This is from Soft Surroundings outlet. It's not cheap, but also not crazy expensive. Even so, I always try to think about a new piece working with 2-3 other items I own.

I think it is worth trying. Culottes are not the easiest shape pants to wear in a flattering way but the right fabric, the right length and the right shoes all help.

I can see why you like the outfit - it is gorgeous!!

I've found that asymmetrical tops can be magical, but you also need to make sure they start and end at the right place for YOUR body.

Culottes and wide legs are much trickier, and I've noticed very, very few in Petite sizes. The length would have to be just right, as would be the width at hip, thigh, and hem, not to mention fabrication. Not impossible, but doable with enough effort.

Did you notice her footwear is low contrast?

Have you figured out why you like the outfit? Is it the high contrast, the colors, the lines, the silhouette -- or do you love the feel and vibe of it? If you get a sense of what you like about it you might be better able to understand how to recreate that portion of it for your shape.

Well, WitchyD, I dunno if “a short, fat woman” can wear this, but YOU can wear whatever your fab self wants!

Maybe try a cheap pair of culottes first as a test. Or chop some old wide legs to see what happens.

This is why I like the new trend of models of all sizes. It irks me when I buy something thinking it might look ok but- eh- not so much. But we have to try. We have to start somewhere or we will be stuck wearing same old boring styles of yesteryear.
I think the top with it’s diagonal design would be a great feature to try.and the neckline is lovely and draws the eye up to your face. I think the coulottes would be fine - just have the length hit you at that spot that looks best ( I find it very tricky on me but once I locate it, I’m good to go)
JESSIKAM has a great idea if you just want to get your toes wet for little cost.

I like how the top is closer to the body and the culottes are wide. I'd try it, and I don't like culottes on me. But now I know what type of look to try.

Soft Surroundings stuff can be so funny. Sometimes a piece that looks beautiful online is just a swampy mess when you try it on, and other times, the thing you thought was really basic (like my Kylie tank tops from there) has the perfect cut to make it look stunning. Of course, it’s nearly impossible to tell which are which when standard models are wearing them.

I think that what makes this work is the contrast of volume on the bottom with the top that, although it drapes, really is fairly slim cut, and close to the body
