Can a leather skirt be casual?

I got to thinking on this as I'm debating between a coated/waxed black denim skirt vs. a moto style real leather one. I want to wear it with tees and sweaters, maybe a flowy button front, tucked in now and again. Basically in a casual vein. Leather pencils are too dressy for me or my wardrobe but with moto details, does that offset the dressiness of the leather material?? Hmmm . . .
and if I go for the 'safer' denim, will I just wish I'd jumped in and gone for the real leather?

The leather one will likely feel softer so that gets my vote.

I'd go for the leather one. It looks suitably casual to me, and would work well with your tees and sweaters. I think you might feel short-changed if you go for the waxed denim one.

I actually think the leather one looks more casual, because it's got more of a RATE feel and seems like it wouldn't be so pencil-y (at least going with how the other one fits on the model). I definitely prefer the leather. Plus after you wear it a bit, I think it'll get that lovely worn-in look.

Is that an AG coated denim skirt? If so I have that in navy, purchased this past Summer for my cruise. I wore it a few times, but found it was slightly constricting as it has no vent in front or back.

Personally I like the unexpectedness of a very casual top with a leather skirt (including pencil skirt if not tight -- sized up, say). I think it makes it current.

Like most clothing items (ok maybe not ball gowns LOL) I think it is how you wear it that will be more important than what you wear for it to be interpreted as a casual look. It is much harder to make a tailored pencil skirt in a suiting fabric look casual because it is designed to be the opposite but it can be done if all of the other elements work to make it that way. Of course not all of us feel we can pull that off as part of our style. And the 'flavour' of the casual look we achieve e.g. RATE, modern classic etc plays into this.

Which is a long way of saying that I think you could go with either of these skirts. If your heart speaks to the leather one I'd go with that.

I vote yay. I think the key to leather and going casual is in the footwear. And with fashion sneakers still growing in popularity, I can see a leather skirt with a t and some fun sneakers and looking casual and fun.

I have a BR navy leather skirt that is my go to for casual...I wear it with tees, blouses blazers and sweaters...Hope this helps

Sounds good Mo. I'm not sure I can give the Kodie 5 stars and you are looking for that, no? Because of the lack of vent, the skirt had a tendency of riding up over the day so it would look even shorter on me than on the model. I would make sure the leather skirt has a vent, unless it is an A-line shape.

I'm going to blatantly copy what Lisa said - the footwear will determine the level of casual to the outfit. And I'd go with genuine leather if you can afford it and the style is suitably classic, not based on a current hot trend that might look dated sooner (because that would seem a waste of money in my mind)

I'd go with the leather because of the feel. Yes, leather can absolutely be made to look casual, especially when paired with Vans, sneakers and other low-key footwear.

I think leather skirts are actually easier than leather pants to pull off the casual look. I think there are a lot more types of shoes that will compliment the skirt more than pants, so you can definitely pull it off. Screw denim on this occasion

Absolutely. I suspect if you put leggings and ballet flats with it those elements would take the skirt down several notches in the dressy department.

Glad you're going for the leather. It is so you, Mo, and I think it will prove way more versatile than a coated denim skirt. I had a leather skirt in the 80s--a knee-length pencil, not too tight--and I wore it more casually, typically with flats and a long sweater. I don't know that I ever dressed it up with heels.

It's an interesting question. I'm not sure. There's always something a little dressed up to me about leather. At the same time, it's not precious like a suit or a ball gown.

Anyways... I'd go for the leather, because I feel you might regret not going for it.
