Camo Jacket: Pounce or Pass?

I tried on this camo jacket while out shopping with Marley and Vicki. I really liked how it is super lightweight, unlined, and cotton. Lighter than anything I have. Great weight for CA. Camo has been a constant in my style for some time, but I'd never found a great camo jacket. I did end up passing it up because $80 seemed too much to pay for such a thin jacket.

Well, now the store is sold out of them... I did find one for a about $60, but I hesitate, worried it would be a "waste" considering my dress code at work. I work about 4 days a week...

It's lovely but I understand, I work 5 days a week and always find a waste to buy things I can only wear on weekends!

Cute and so you! Lightweight jackets are great for your climate. Is this a wardrobe hole for your weekend wear? Get it, unless it means you can't buy something you need more for work. Besides, I have lots of jackets/coats that I wear *to* work but take off once I get inside at work, so not every jacket has to be work-appropriate. Plus if you work 4 days a week that still leaves 3 days off...

Do you have a Target near you? I was just in one yesterday and they have a similar jacket but I don't remember if there was a hood. I can't find it online, but I think it's a new item.

Maybe I am batty but I think this could work with a slim skirt and chunky boots.

I think it fits in with your style and if you are still thinking about it, then perhaps you should buy it, try it with a few outfits and then decide if it has the versatility needed to fit in your wardrobe.

You have to figure out your hesitation.

1. If it's because you mostly like it, but aren't sure and think you might regret it at its current price point, wait awhile. Set up a daily search on eBay (I can walk you through the steps) and see if one appears there (this is how I hunted down my favorite Cole Haan heeled Oxfords).

2. If it's because you can't quite justify the expense in your own mind because you think there are other things you need/should/want to spend your money on - including work clothes that you need (versus want) - wait for the item that you HAVE to have.

3. But If this jacket makes you feel happy, and you would wear it on weekends, and you can swing the expense, I say DO IT. Buy it

And do what one of the gals suggested, wear it on your way out the door from work

hmm think I have to be an enabler on this one. I like it for your style, and like the light weight option. It looks like it would pack into a wee tiny ball which you could have in your purse which is such a great option.

I'm thinking, where does this lie on your shopping priority list? If it's a Level 1 item by all means but if it's a Level 3 item and you have other Level 1 and 2 items still to buy. I'm saying pass on it. Unless you absolutely have to have it and you'll love/wear it to pieces...

It's only a $20 difference from when you saw and passed on it originally. I think the fact that's it's sold out but you happened to find one in your size has your heart racing more than the fact you need this jacket. Did you regret not buying it at $80?

Hmm, I'm wondering if your hesitation might be due to a style transition. Will your new cut (which I love, BTW) work as well with your love for camo prints as did your long hair? Camo can toughen up the feminine look of long hair but, with short hair, can sometimes end up looking very casual and quite boyish. Your decision to crop your hair, the wardrobe requirements of your new job, and your interest using a bit more makeup for a more polished look might be signs that your overall style is undergoing a change.

So, commenting before I read the other posts so that they don't influence me

1. Working 4 days a week, does mean you have 3 to yourself. However, you have an extensive jacket collection, particularly for California, if I remember correctly.
2. I have really liked you in the camo you have worn, but a camo coat is a big camo commitment.
3. Can you figure out how much you wanted the jacket before and after you discovered it was sold out in your size?

I really think #3 is key here. You left it at $80. Would you have bought it that day if it were $60? If the answer is no, move on. There is a part in all of us that wants things because they are scarce. Think back to beanie babies (not that this is anywhere near that, as you can wear the jacket and get use out of it, but you get the idea). Something is more desirable if it is scarce.

To me passing at $80 and passing at $60 are about identical. Just seems like only a burrito shop visit of difference you know?

ETA: now if you've been kicking yourself for leaving it that is another story...

To me the price is good, but that's sort of a personal thing. I don't like camo too much, but I do like you in it (your pants!) and I do think this jacket looks good. If a camo jacket is something you've wanted for a long time, I think it's a good purchase.....but if you think it won't get worn then maybe not. Do you have some other casual jackets that maybe need replacing?

Finding myself in a place where I seem to be wearing almost all work stuff lately, I would hesitate to buy an item you don't think will be work wear appropriate. It seems that you have a lot of weekend/casual jackets you could wear already? Of course, love at first sight is love and it's hard to argue with love. Rationally, I would hold off, emotionally, it may be a different story.

Whether in-person or seeing it here online, I say pounce like the true Meow-sketeer that you are! All work and no play clothes could make you hiss. I can see you wearing this with brights, like red, or any of your fab trousers.

Rae - this jacket is YOU. And as someone who works five full time days per week, I know how easy it is to neglect your casual wardrobe and end up with all work items and nothing for just "hanging out". I think this jacket is perfect for your evening and weekend style (picture with some of your fab sour citron items and your new Gap khakis).

I can't tell you whether you can "afford" this in your wardrobe.

But, if you know you can't wear it to work and you want more outfit crossover or want more light jackets that go to work ( I do, so that's one of my goals and temptations, as I have more casual wear than time spent in it ), then you might put "jacket that feels like the camo jacket and is a bit RATE but still can wear to work" on your list. Something in the crossover line of safari, utility, pseudo-camo is probably out there. For weekends, for example, you could dress that down with a camo T shirt or cargo pants.

I've really enjoyed reading the responses here (LOL, Vicki!!!) and I find it interesting to see how divided people are.

I honestly don't know what to say on this one, Rae. I think it would look good on you and I bet you would wear it. As to whether it's a #1 priority, that's a whole other question. Hmmm.

Do you keep all of your toppers indoors? You could even wear it to work, as an outer layer that you take off once indoors.
