Camis and tanks

I have been lurking for quite awhile but now have got up my nerve to chime in. You all inspire me with your knowledge, style and helpfulness. While lurking, I became confident I will get great advice without the harsh words that sometimes happen on-line. So here goes...

As I look at my fall wardrobe, I need a refresh on camis and/or tanks. In the past I have tended towards either camis with built-in bras or Old Navy tanks. Other suggestions? Places to look for decent quality at a low price? (e.g., I've found Target camis are cheap but the straps loose elastic after a few washings) I'm looking for white (always), purple, grey...

I have had great luck with Express camis, and they usually come in 'two for $.." deal. Very durable and inexpensive. J Jill, H&M, Nordstrom's BP department are also possibilities.

I like Nordstrom BP ones. I haven't tried Target camis, but their Mossimo tanks actually work well for me.

Tanya, next time I'm going to try Express ones, too.

I agree with Nordstroms. I also like Ann Taylor Loft camis (have self bra) which often can be found on sale. Look for a good long length in a light weight fabric you can bunch a bit to adjust length and adjustable lingerie straps are also a plus to get that cami right where you want it.

Marianne, the Target tanks you mention also work for me because they are so long and not too low cut in the neck.

I don't like the shelf-bra kind - give me oddly shaped breasts. I just wear a bra under, since I'm layering, nobody sees the straps.

I find my camis at Ann Taylor Loft, Banana Republic, and H&M.

The BR ones are probably the best quality - they are synthetic blend so they suck you in and give you some smoothing & tummy control. Also come in petite sizing, if you need that. I have basic white, cream, and black.

H&M is cheapest: I snapped up 5 in different colors there this summer, they were about 5 or 6 dollars each. Adjustable straps, a little satin trim along the top, long enough. We'll see how they wear over time. The colors were nice, and they do have a bit of stretch too (not as much as BR).

ATL ones are softest, and offered in colors that complement their other clothes. Always good to buy a cami there if you are buying a top you want to layer.

When my camis get old and ratty, I wear them to bed with pj bottoms. I have to tell you, most of my bedtime tops are Old Navy tanks. They don't wear well and got quickly resigned to pj wear.

I recently bought two camis (w/ shelf bra) at Express. Like Tanya said, they were two for $29, or something like that. They carry a ton of colors. I like them b/c they're long and hold me in place, mid-section wise.

I have also bought camis at AT Loft.

Oh, I also wear ON tanks to bed or over a sports bra for working out. I don't mind if they get ratty.

I can only echo others' recommendations. I get mine at:
-Express
-Nordstrom BP department
-J Jill
-ATL
The only other suggestion I have is to try Jockey online; I got a couple cute lacey ones in bright colors there.

I mostly get mine at BR. They are really good quality and tend to last a while. I snatch them up when they are on sale, usually a 2 for $xx. Sometimes even the basic colors go on sale if they are changing the style up a bit. They are nice and long. I also have found that they don't shrink.

Just wanted to add that I was just at a BR store today and they have camis in beautiful colors: mustardy yellow, berry, teal, coral, kelly green etc. And they were on sale for 2 for $x deals.
Also, Nordstrom has halogen brand camis, I have not seen these but I plan to check them out when i am there next.
