We can't all have gorgeous and expansive dressing rooms with storage custom-designed for our wardrobes, huh?

I'm interested in hearing from forum members who, due to space/household limitations, have quirky clothes storage situations. How do you work around these limitations when outfit planning and getting dressed to make sure you actually make use of your clothes, even the less accessible ones?

Ok, that's really abstract. Let me explain my situation. In our current house, I have all my folded clothes (so, jeans/cords/leggings, knitwear, underpinnings, etc.) in an IKEA Pax wardrobe in the bedroom. My hanging clothes (basically anything woven) are in the office/guest room closet on the ground floor of the house, 2 flights of stairs down from the bedroom.

I've been finding that this leads to a lot of "bedpost dressing" where I just grab whatever items are hanging on the bedpost and wear the same thing day after day. And it also certainly leads to ignoring a lot of my hanging clothes and just defaulting to the folded clothes that are much more accessible to me when getting dressed.

(Plus, at the time I am getting dressed in the morning, my husband is at work in the office, and 85% of his job is zoom meetings, so I don't exactly want to go in there and rummage around in the closet a bunch!)

So -- how have other people dealt with similar clothes storage situations effectively to enjoy getting dressed creatively and make use of their full wardrobe? Help me brainstorm ways around this limitation.

(I know, I know, an obvious solution is planning outfits ahead -- which I KNOW is good for me but I can never manage to stick to it. So any brainstorms about how to do that consistently/work it into your daily routine would be most welcome too!)

ET clarify: I appreciate the retail solutions that people are offering here but really I am interested in behavioral solutions -- systems or routines that enable/have in the past enabled you to get dressed effectively despite quirky clothes storage solutions. Please let us stipulate that there is no room to add storage furniture in my bedroom and my clothing storage will be quirky for the foreseeable future.

Can you add a hanging section to your PAX wardrobe amd move some of your clothes there? And maybe get a dresser and move your folded clothes there?

Honestly, I have a little clothes stand from ikea (correct word for it isn’t coming to mind) where I hang clothes once I wear them, if they don’t need to be laundered yet. I frequently wind up pulling clothes from there. Means I rewear the same items, but I do mix them into different outfits. Basically, I make little capsules on the fly.

Oh Lordy, two floors apart. To make outfits, I have to see clothing in the same vicinity because then I am often inspired to pair things I had never considered before.

One method I use a lot is to have very short cantilevered rods that are on the outside of closet doors. I'll look for a typical picture. I use the flocked hangers and these little rods hold a whole lot. I can put shirts on one rod and since I have a double door closet, skirts or pants on the other.

My rooms are right next door, but I have a similar situation. We're in a rental, and the closets in both bedrooms have closet organizers with almost all hanging rails. I have taken the guest bedroom closet as my main closet. I have all my hanging clothes as well as my shoes in that closet. In the main bedroom, I have a small chest as a nightstand ( this holds socks and undies), and one side of the closet which has some drawers that hold tees, tanks, swimsuits, and bras, and a hanging rail.
On the weekend, I plan outfits for my work week and place them on the hanging rail of my side of the maim bedroom closet. I also bring the coordinating shoes into the bedroom. This way, when I am getting dressed for work, everything is there. I will leave the worn items that do not need laundering in the bedroom closet until I switch clothes out for the week.
It's a very imperfect system, and I would like to find a better arrangement.

You could pick and plan your wardrobe for a week in advance and store it somewhere specifically made for that purpose. It's really fun if you do it with friends and family!

It's an imperfect solution, but how about a hanging rack for the bedroom. I use one in my basement for clothes I'm going to give away, and clothes that need altering.

This is similar to the one I use, and it is a real workhorse. Tough as nails and holds a lot. If you go this route, buy one with rubber wheels that are omnidirectional. You'll thank yourself every time you have to move it!

Two floors! No wonder you resort to bedpost dressing. That is difficult.

My too-obvious solution (probably already in use to the extent you are able) is to separate out the seasonally useless stuff and put it in storage, leaving more room for what is actually wearable. But that is less effective in the PNW climate than it was for me in Ontario since more items are cross seasonal. And it wouldn't solve your hanging clothes issue either.

So...does your husband keep his clothes in the shared bedroom? If so, maybe he can move his stuff to the study where he works and you can have the closet space in the bedroom?

Failing that, I like the idea of an additional PAX area for some hanging clothes or a rearrangement of the Pax you have. Other options -- if you have higher ceilings you may be able to build up with shelf space, allowing more room for reorganizing the Pax below? Hooks or rods on the back of doors are also possible ideas.

If there is room for another dresser or even if you can call on bedside tables for some drawer space, that might help...

If you have a bookshelf of some kind in the bedroom you could get baskets and put some clothing items in there instead of books. (I know -- then where would the books go? -- the problems are real!)

And I use those multiple hangers for skirts and trousers to save space...

Bedpost dressing!!!!

We live in a smallish loft with VERY limited storage, so I greatly empathize, SarahD8. Greg zooms all day and we don't have closed spaces in the loft so when your time is up to do stuff - it's up! I SOOO GET IT!

I have the main closet in the bedroom, and Greg shares the big drawers in that closet. The rest of his clothes are in the ONE other closet in the loft. Our wardrobe basics are in a chest of drawers in the bedroom. Coats downstairs in a makeshift coat CABINET that Greg made.

I added a rolling rack to the bedroom to hang tops and jackets on. Maybe you could do that too? To have it all close-by. I keep it very neat and tidy - all the hangers match - so that it's not an eye sore in the bedroom.

We each have a small enough wardrobe that we don't need to swap out seasons. We also don't have too many pairs of shoes that take up space. So everything is visible and not too far away from each other - apart from the coats downstairs. It's quirky - but we have made it work!

Gosh, I picked an unfortunate time to throw my query out there. I am away from home for a few days and I thought: I'll just noodle on this problem while I'm away and see what solutions emerge. But since I'm not at home I can't take pics to show you all the various constraints in the room(s)! [I will see if I can dig up a few photos from my archive that give a bit of a sense of what I'm working with.- on second thought I don't think photos are helping, so removing them.]

*The long and short (or, length and width!) of it is that the majority of the floor space in the bedroom is taken up by our queen size bed. There is approximately a 2-foot walkway on either side of the bed, and a similar amount of space between the foot of the bed and some bookshelves.

*So, there is no space to add any furniture or even a rolling rack to the room.

*Replacing the bookshelves with a dresser isn't really practical, because there would not be enough space between the dresser and the bed to open the dresser drawers.

*I suppose we could replace *one* of the bookshelves with a rack? But then, yes, where do we put the stuff that is currently on the bookshelves? Also, the rolling rack is likely to be deeper than the bookshelves (shelves are about 13", rack that Kate linked to is 22" -- very, very tight in terms of accessing the far side of the bed).

*PAX wardrobes (I have one, my husband has one) are inside a small walk-in closet off the bedroom. They take up basically the entire wall space available. There is no room to add another unit.

*Ok, you know where we could actually just barely squeeze in another Pax unit? In the little alcove between the bedroom door and the bathroom door. But, Madame Tortie's litterbox currently resides there. And, it will continue to do so as long as Mr. Orange is around. Mr. Orange is 17, but I think you will understand that I must fervently hope this alcove space is taken for as long as possible, even approaching forever. Hence, my interest in systems -- by which I guess I sort of mean behavioral systems -- to work around the current constraints.

I think you are right SF and chewyspaghetti that I need some kind of staging system, albeit perhaps not a rolling rack. Maybe a hook inside the closet where I could at least stash the hanging clothes for the week?

Vildy, hmmm, I am intrigued by this over-door rod! I feel like it could at *least* accommodate the hanging clothes for the current season. Because of the configurations of the Pax units within the closet, this would potentially impinge on my husband's use of the closet much more than mine. Need to ask him if he's willing to give it a go.

Suz, yes, you're right, it's not really a seasonal switcheroo issue. There's plenty of room for my folding clothes, and plenty of room for my hanging clothes -- just very difficult to turn folded clothes storage into hanging clothes storage.

Reconfiguring my Pax unit for hanging clothes would mean not only somehow moving most of my folded clothes to the bookshelf, but also finding a space for our linens (upper third of my Pax unit is our linen closet). I had the linens on the bookshelf when we first moved in and I hated it -- so messy looking. At least with the current setup everything is neatly behind doors, even if in disparate locations.

As for my husband putting his clothes in the office -- he could move his hanging clothes down to the office closet where mine are now. But there is no space in the office to create storage for folded clothes. So one or the other of us is going to have clothes two floors apart...not sure why it should be him rather than me?

Angie how does Greg deal with having his clothes in different spots? Does he have any kind of system for getting dressed that makes the setup a bit more seamless for him?

Is Mr Orange’s litter box covered, or could you perhaps hang a very low shelf to be a ceiling for his “private” area, so odors wouldn’t waft up to your clothes in the staging area above? (An aside on staging areas: like Vildly, I like to look at things together to decide what to wear. But I tend to get excited about wearing one piece, and then want to find something to go with it, so it’s easy enough to drag just that one item to where the rest is stored to find partners. You could even skip the outfit-making step at first and just gather your capsule, ready for inspiration during the week). Sadly, the trip to IKEA’s website seems to have turned on that portion of my brain again, so everything I’m about to say will probably sound like I’m a villager from Smalland.

In general, I think what you really want is get out your drill and go vertical. Some ideas: An open shelf with baskets or Lack shelving units/Hemnes wall shelves (could be with bins) above the door or flush against the ceiling around the room? Or a bookshelf wrapping around the room up there (because really, how often do you open them?) Shelves or a small cabinet with doors (sort of like Ivar, but more finished) hung on the wall of his office? A graceful shelf above the headboard of your bed for linens in boxes/baskets/bins?. A pegboard with hooks that you either hang clothes on or use to put hangers on? (I’d use this for those “clirty” things that are neither clean nor dirty). A very long row of Shaker (probably not from Ikea) hooks to be used the same way? Way up high shelves in the bathroom, to use as a linen closet (1 set of sheets per bin)? Outfitting the kitties’ “library annex” (that’s what my mom called the bathroom when my dad took the newspaper in there) with bookshelves, hung very securely on the walls? Extending the current bookshelves all the way to the ceiling? You could move books up there and have skinnier shelves (side-to-side, not front-to-back) or use the extra for sheets up top or way down low. For linens, use bins. I think I’d prefer the look of a solid wall of bins right at floor level. If you want to be daring in bed (or if y’all are totally unadventurous there) you could put the bookshelves on the wall above the headboard.

I don’t understand putting Pax in a walk-in closet. Don’t they take up more room than just installing rods and Closet Maid shelves? If you have a lot of standard-sized paperbacks, you might be able to double them up on the bookshelves.

No total solutions, obviously, but some thoughts to get your juices going, so you can’t wait to get home and rearrange the closets, yay.

ETA. Just saw the pix. Drawers/shelves (must be the Pax) look great. Goodness gracious, look at all that lovely space around the bed! You could replace the nightstands with a tall set of shelves, reserving bottom shelves to be used for whatever you do with your nightstands now, and filling the rest of them with books, folded clothes, bins of bedding, or whatever your heart desires. I vote for linens on his side, folded clothes on yours. Knock the bins on their side and stack sweaters in them, so you see the ends of the sweaters, then store them sideways, so that one of the sides faces the room. Use the space where linens are now for smaller folded items that would get lost in bins. There is a Lack wall unit that’s open on the sides; if you use that one, you could still have your lamps. Varde bathroom shelves are a little wider and also open on the sides—stack 2 on top of each other on each side (cutting them to fit if necessary). Or get closed shelves (maybe https://www.ikea.com/de/de/p/h.....-40371763/ ) and then put swags above the bed.

SF, thanks for turning on that part of your brain for me and sorry for what I am about to do which is pretty much dismiss it out of hand. Basically I am not interested in adding more open storage to the bedroom. It is small as it is, plus I have had open storage for folded clothes such as you are describing in the past and it really stressed me out.

Our nightstands and bedside lights were purchased a year ago after much of thought and negotiation about both function and aesthetics. They are staying.

Why Pax in the walk-in closet: because we already owned them and they were very carefully tailored to our storage needs (minus of course my hanging clothes, which were kept in the small reach-in closet in our old bedroom). Sure, one could get rid of them and kit out the walk-in closet with whatever, but it's not a financial or time priority at the moment, and also pandemic supply chain disruptions.

So, that's why I'm interested in finding ways to work with the current setup.

I’d be tempted to convert the bookshelf space into some sort of solution, but yeah, that’s a shallow space. I have an antique armoire that used to hold my husband’s hanging clothes back when we lived in our old home with tiny awkward closets. The clothes actually had to hang at an angle to fit in the shallow depth! I also had a rolling rack in the corner of the bedroom for my clothes, hidden with a shoji screen. It wasn’t perfect but it worked. It would drive me bonkers to have to go two flights to complete an outfit.

It’s hard to suggest more without seeing the whole space, but I understand you can’t do that at the moment. I’ve been in serious space-planning mode recently, thinking about all of our home renovations, so I understand! Currently solving the pressing issue of where the dogs’ water bowl will live (a solution was found!).

Love Vildy's solution with the extra rods on the closet's doors- but unfortunatelly this wouldn't work on my PAX's sliding doors made of glass&mirror. I do have one short cantilevered rod instead sticking out extra of the end side of ours and some valet hangers, too- which work great with the Pax(but still not enough space, of course:-)).

My storage is very piecemail- it's awful. The tiny closet I use is in the bedroom currently occupied by mom, and most of my shoes, belts, hats, and gloves are in there too. I have a small dresser, cedar chest, and a storage bin in my bedroom. The shoes I wear a lot are in an ottomon in the living room by my chair. And my robe and underwear are in a bin in the bathroom, so I can put them on straightaway post shower.
The real solution (for me) is to start editing, but I can't really do that til I have my room back (full length mirror is in there).
As far as dressing, I'm just reaching for whatever I find first. Luckily my wardrobe goes together easily, and of course summer dressing is much easier than winter dressing.

To answer your question, SarahD8, Greg manages very well because the other room is very close-by. Maybe 10 steps? Our loft is NOT big! His bottoms, shoes and shirts are in the other closet (but not shorts and adidas track pants - they are folded in my closet). He HAS TO WEAR bottoms that are not shorts or track pants most of the year! So it forces him to go to the other room, IYKWIM. He also has a valet that he keeps in our room with the pants he wore the day before. He grabs those often too.

What works for me is getting the next day's outfit out in the evening including accessories and underwear. Occasionally weather changes the plan but it helps me get dressed quickly. No thinking. I have a small pull out rod to hang them on. Sometimes wrinkles mean pressing is required or a wrinkle release spray which dries overnight.

If it were me, I think I would consolidate all clothes one place or the other for the sake of sanity at the expense of some quantity. It is possible to hang everything (including sweaters, jeans, tee shirts); this is what I do, because there is not enough space in my bedroom for a dresser. I have a slim floor to ceiling rack in that same closet that has small bins for socks, panties, pjs, exercise wear. Bras and belts are hung off of that together on hooks. Bags are tucked on an upper shelf with some off season things. Shoes are on a wall rack. It is not a huge amount of space, and the storage type is a consideration (no very fine knits that can't be hung for me!) and I keep my numbers to a size where everything fits in one space. I would go mad otherwise! Good luck!

I love the term bedpost dressing I can't imagine having to deal with 2 flights of stairs to pull together an outfit Have you tried having a photo catalog of outfits or items in the downstairs closet? I've never done this but I was just thinking over the last few days that it would help me tremendously in getting dressed more quickly and (and for me better understanding what I have/need)

One other idea, because I can’t help myself—in-season clothes in the closet, with a hanging set of fabric “shelves”. Out of season stuff folded up downstairs. From what I understand of Seattle weather, this probably means 3/4 of your clothes upstairs. Maybe you could put the sheets downstairs (is that where laundry is done?)

I used to use an over door hanger to hang a few outfits at a time for the week. Don’t overload it or you will, like me, destroy the door hinges.

Do you have any storage space under your bed? Can you put folded items into something and store them under the bed and then free up the other storage for hanging items?

How about shifting your morning routine? Can you shuffle the order in which you do something so you can get into the office space before your husband starts to work? Maybe wake up a few minutes earlier?

It sounds complicated, for sure. And your space is limited. I didn't see your pics, but I entirely understand your wish to keep things uncluttered and closed up -- I do poorly with a lot of open storage also. It feels like visual noise to me. Books are one thing, and some selected decorative objects, but not clothing or linens or bathroom stuff or even kitchen stuff...I prefer a mostly clean counter with most appliances etc. hidden. (Although, of course, that isn't always possible and hasn't always been possible in my own life, either!)

My thought about your husband is that (from your first description) he is down there using the room where half your clothes are at a time when you might need your clothes. If his work timing is different from yours and he is going to be going to work there anyway, why not also use the space as his "dressing room." He could still keep undies and PJs or some loungewear up in your shared space.

That's more or less what we do because Mr. Suz is an earlier riser than I am and he wakes me up super early (like at 4:30, some days) if he tries to get dressed from our closet. (It involves turning lights on and shifting things around -- noise.) So he keeps his hanging clothes in our (admittedly, nearby) hall closet and his foldeds in a dresser in his study, which is, admittedly, right next to our bedroom. and is also, admittedly, the room he typically ends up in right after his coffee and breakfast, unless he heads straight to the gym.

That's in our current home. In the old house, for the first few years, he did tend to wake me (we shared the closet) and his study was up a flight of stairs, so eventually he started to choose and lay out out his outfit for next day ahead of time. Occasionally the weather would not be as predicted but that was ok. He is not a mood dresser like me so it was easier for him to do the ahead of time planning than it would have been for me to do it. Essentially, we tried to adapt on the basis of our personalities/ waking hours/ work needs in combination with the hard storage situation.

I was thinking underbed like Staysfit. Maybe this has been mentioned but I didn't see it.

I have a bit of hodgepodge also in our house - no room for a dresser. I hang most things and have a column of shelves for folded pants, sweaters and shoes. I have bins under the bed in our office/sewing room/guest room for socks, p.j.s and underwear. That room is right next to our bedroom so I get dressed in there and lay everything out the night before. It works pretty well although I need better bins because mine don't slide in and out very well. Hubby has his own closet with a dresser in it so the guest space is all my own.

Well, I would have to have everything in one spot, for sure, and would probably call in an organizing consultant to make it happen. The lazy, cowardly approach, right? You’ve gotten some great suggestions on here, so I hope some of them work out to make your dressing process easier!

So much of it comes down to your routines and preferences as well.

Given your space constraints I think a couple of hooks somewhere to hang a couple of pieces on would be worthwhile. Even just three pieces could get you through a few days.

I exercise early and put out my clothes in the hall the night before. I sometimes decide what I will wear for work as well, sometimes it’s later.

Thanks all for these great suggestions and for sticking with me. (Special shout out to SF for not being put off totally by my crankiness!)

I had a long hike and two long drives yesterday to let all this percolate in the background and here is what I have come to.

Janet's comment about being "in serious space-planning mode" was so helpful! It reminded me that *I* have also been in serious space-planning mode since we moved in to our new place last year! There has already been a LOT of organizing, reorganizing, shuffling things around, optimizing. (Our house is not particularly tiny or quirky, but it is an urban townhouse, so space and layout options are naturally limited.) As a result, I am particularly loath to throw out the things that are working well (drawers with kon-mari folded clothes, linen closet setup, etc.) to solve this hanging-clothes problem.

So, I think what I am going to do is try to implement some *small* tweaks first and see if that will improve things, and if not consider a larger overhaul.

lyn67, thanks so much for your great suggestion of the Komplement valet hook. I take back what I said about not wanting a retail solution! This could be perfect, and wonder of wonders it's actually in stock at my local IKEA. I had actually been thinking about installing a valet hook on the wall beside the wardrobe, but then realized that it would be too hard to get the drill into the narrow space between the wardrobe and the wall. Making use of the wardrobe frame instead is genius! This would at least allow me to create a small staging area to bring up the hanging clothes wanted for a week or two. I will endeavor to remember cat2's good advice about not overloading it!

Then -- behavior change. To suntiger's point about "luckily my wardrobe goes together easily" -- how could I make my wardrobe more like that? Perhaps by spending some time playing and doing outfit creation sessions at the beginning of the season so that I am not relying so much on the same FFBOs over and over again. Maybe even with photos as VintageDawn suggests, I do think that visual record would help.

And then, finding a way to lay out/plan outfits ahead of time as Joy and RobinF and Sal suggest would also help since I don't have the bandwidth to be creative in my closet in the morning. I have always had trouble working this into my daily routine but now it occurs to me that I often spend a little time upstairs hanging out with Mme. Tortie after I eat lunch; assuming that I had a bit of a staging area for hanging clothes this could be a good time to create a little outfit planning ritual, a nice bit of self-care and exercising a different creative part of my brain in the middle of the day.

Thanks Angie and Suz for describing how things work in your households as that helped me understand why this is such a pinch point in mine! Angie your comment that "He HAS TO WEAR bottoms" made me smile and also made me think: oh yeah, I don't *have* to wear a woven top most of the year, I can just wear knitwear instead which is stored in the bedroom -- no wonder I default to that. And Suz, people's biological rhythms make such a difference, don't they? In my house I am the early riser. To make effective use of the current setup, I would need a block of time when my husband is neither sleeping nor in the office so that I could access both clothing stashes. That window is roughly 20 minutes in the morning, and it's exactly when I generally shower! (Plus, add in kid-related responsibilities during the school year and the possibilities for tweaking the morning schedule shrink even further.) So, that makes a place to stash a few hanging clothes in the bedroom even more crucial!

Moving folded clothes to underbed storage as Staysfit and RobinF suggest, making use of vertical wall space in the kitty corner per Stagaire Fash's suggestion, or having all current season clothes hanging as notsaf suggests are all potentially workable but would require a much bigger overhaul, so I'll consider those further if the smaller tweaks fail. I need to remember that for my weird brain, if clothing is in a bunch of scattered caches, requires a stepstool to access, or requires a bunch of complicated seasonal switcheroos, it might as well be two floors below. So, I need to make sure I'm not just trading one cause of bedpost dressing for another, if that makes sense.

Anyway, thank you all for your suggestions and for talking this through with me! (Xtabay, I guess asking the forum is the lazy, cowardly, and *miserly* approach, haha!) I am so glad to have a plan and will keep you posted with any wild success or total failure results.

Sounds sensible -- do keep us updated! Organization of clothing (or anything, really) is a big job when you have a small space, or even, sometimes, when you have a large space!

I’m retired now, but when I was working, I had to get up in the dark to dress and catch a train to the Big City. I developed a Sunday night ritual of assembling a mini mix and match capsule sufficient to get me through 5 working days with some variety, after checking the extended weather forecast. In the morning, I was able to quickly assemble outfits suitable for the day. It’s not much different than packing a suitcase for a trip and I enjoyed the style exercise.

I have all my garments in Finds and find it useful for creating capsules. It would save you running up and down the stairs collecting and returning items as you work out your capsule for the week.
