Calling all Blondes - Darker Lipstick OK for us?

Hi there, Question for the fair-skinned blondes out there.

I've noticed that darker lipstick is coming back. I was thumbing through the Anthropologie catalog and most of the models are wearing a dusky wine color.

I'm curious if any of you have tried a darker shade and what shades you might recommend?

I have dark blond hair, fair skin and brown eyes so I tend to wear warmer makeup tones.

I would love any lipcolor recommendations that have worked for those with similar coloring?

Hmm, I typically wear peachy lip gloss and rosy pink lip stick so anything beyond that looks darker to me on my own face. I guess I better go to a makeup counter

I do like a darker lipstick every now and then, as a teenager I wore Rimmel Black Cherry lipstick with nothing more than a sweep of mascara. I found it most flattering if I patted a little of the colour onto balmed lips for a stain of colour. Revlon has just introduced a very similar shade which I am tempted to try

Dusky wine does sound tempting, if you are wanting to add a touch of drama.

Edit: my hair is a darker shade of blond than yours.

Hoping Jenny will weigh in as well, since I think she is a fan of darker lipstick (or at least, red lipstick).

If you are not used to a darker lipstick, you will definitely get a shock when you first see it on your face. This usually scares women back to their comfort zone where they stay with pinks, peaches, and nudes and shun reds and darker colors. For this reason, I recommend a "training wheel" color to help you transition and get acclimated to the look.

I would check out Clinique's infamous Black Honey Almost Lipstick. There is a reason most women have owned a tube. It is as close to universally flattering a cosmetic can get and the sheer berry color is a very good stepping stone for easing into darker lip colors.

I echo Dresslover's Clinique "Black Honey" suggestion. A friend of mine opened my eyes to this brand in the late 80's (!) and I still keep it on hand today.

That said, I think dark lipstick looks better on young blondes than on those of use who are past 45. Unless it's part of a calculated and very cultivated style, it can look quite garish and aging on older skin. Like you I have brown (hazel) eyes, blonde hair and warm coloring. But since I've gotten older I stay away from dramatic dark lip color.

I wear Clinique Black Honey. I'm 47, I have warm colouring and am fair skinned, grey/blue eyes, and reddish-blonde hair. I tend to wear it over lip balm so it's very sheer. nancylee is right, the older you get, the harder it is to wear dramatically dark colours!

Also bear in mind that if you have thin lips darker colours don't look so great, IMO x

I'm a blonde with pale skin and use Clinique's Black Honey. It's universally flattering, as mentioned above. I am very, very tempted by this:

Lipstick Queen is awesome. Very purpose-specific formulas and colors. Her Sinner line (opaque pigment) are far more moisturizing than other opaque lipsticks. (I'm looking at you, MAC Ruby Woo.)

I have a hard time wearing dark or red lipsticks. Just doesn't look right on me. I prefer to stick with more of a natural lipcolor

We just went to see Super 8 last night, and the girl in it has blonde hair and wears a dark lipstick with an otherwise clean face. It looks really good on her and she is very pale, but she is a teenager and could probably look good in anything. I do seem to be seeing that dark lips/nude face look again. It's quite dramatic, but I like it.

I knew this German girl who wore a burgundy lipstick. Nothing else. No eyes, brows, or cheeks. She really knocked it out of the ball park.
